THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Mixed precipitation. Freezing rain and sleet will be the
  main precipitation type, with a little snow possible as the
  precipitation ends this evening. Any additional snow
  accumulation will be less than an inch. Freezing rain and sleet
  accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch will occur in some
  areas.
  

* WHERE...Northwestern Connecticut, the mid-Hudson valley and
  Catskills in east central New York and southwestern
  Massachusetts.

* WHEN...Precipitation will end by late evening but travel will
  remain hazardous into the early morning hours. 

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The wintery mix of precipitation will 
  result in difficult travel conditions, including during the 
  evening commute. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.

.SYNOPSIS...
Seasonable temperatures are expected tonight into
Tuesday, along with a few passing snow showers or flurries,
especially for areas downwind of Lake Ontario. As a storm system
moves across the region, a widespread moderate to heavy snowfall is
expected on Wednesday into Wednesday night.  Behind this storm
system, dry weather is expected on Thursday before some additional
light snow impacts the area for Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1215 AM, midlevel clouds quickly advancing eastward, with
the leading edge along roughly the Hudson River Valley. Temps
have fallen off quickly ahead of this cloud cover with single
digits and teens common. Have updated the grids to reflect a
colder temperature trace. However, temperatures should stabilize
or rise a couple degrees once the midlevel clouds move overhead,
so forecast lows are near or just a bit below current readings.
A few snow showers may creep into the higher terrain west of the
Hudson as the night wears on, especially near the western
Adirondacks toward morning. Elsewhere, a dry column will take
time to saturate, so mainly no more than virga through 12Z.

Prev Disc...Fast zonal flow is place aloft, with surface high
pressure located southwest of the region over the Ohio Valley.
IR and visible satellite imagery shows completely sunny skies
over much of the area this afternoon. Skies will continue to
remain fairly clear this evening, however, some clouds will
start to increase for during the overnight hours, as moisture
currently over the Midwest streams towards the area from the
west.

Winds have been very gusty during the day today due to a strong
pressure gradient behind the departing storm system that
brought Sunday's snowfall, but winds should start to relax this
evening, as this storm system continues to move further away
from the area.

Although it should be dry for much of the overnight hours,
western areas may start to see some light snow showers or
flurries for the end of the overnight or towards daybreak. Most
areas will just see a dusting, although up to an inch is
possible in upslope favored locations of the western
Adirondacks.

Overnight lows will generally be in the teens for most spots
(some single digits across the highest terrain).

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Winter Storm Watch issued for the entire area for Wednesday
into Wednesday night...

A weak northern stream system will slide across the region for
Tuesday morning. Moisture will be very limited, but there could
be some snow showers and flurries, especially for the higher
elevations. Most areas will see little accumulation, although a
coating to an inch is possible for some higher terrain areas.
Highs on Tuesday look fairly seasonable, with mid 20s to mid 30s
across the area with a fairly cloudy sky in place thanks to the
passing shortwave.

Behind this system, chilly temps aloft will allow for a deeper
mixed layer and a band of lake effect snow looks to develop off
the eastern end of Lake Ontario for Tuesday afternoon into
Tuesday evening, which may allow for some additional light
accumulation across the western Adirondacks, otherwise, skies
will be starting to decrease by late in the day.

Any lake-effect should diminish for Tuesday night, as surface
high pressure slides across the area and inversion levels
crash. Skies should clear out for Tuesday evening with lows
back into the teens, but some clouds will start to increase for
late Tuesday night as the next system rapidly approaches the
area.

The next system will be developing near the lower Mississippi
Valley for late Tuesday night and will be lifting towards the
Ohio Valley for Wednesday morning. This system will be develop
and slide along a strong baroclinic zone ahead of an approaching
upper level trough within the broad sw flow aloft in place over
the eastern CONUS. Once the surface storm reaches SW PA, it
looks to reform south of Long Island and lift northward towards
eastern New England by late Wednesday evening.

As a result, a period of strong isentropic lift and frontogenesis
will occur across our area for much of the day on Wednesday.
Precip should begin by the mid to late morning hours on
Wednesday and quickly increase in intensity by Wednesday
afternoon.

Depending on the exact track (which is still uncertain) both
warming aloft and within the boundary layer may allow for mixed
precip and/or rain to creep up into the mid-Hudson Valley and
NW CT by late Wednesday into Wednesday evening. If the latest
NAM is correct, it's possible that some warmer air aloft could
even get close to the Capital Region, which could allow for a
brief period of sleet, cutting down on totals slightly. At this
time, have gone with a thermal blend of NAM/GFS/ECMWF, which
limits the mixing to as far north as Saugerties and Great
Barrington.

Otherwise, the remainder of the area should remain cold enough
to have all precip in the form of snow. A general consensus of
the GFS/NAM/ECMWF/GGEM/SREF/GEFS suggests that about a half to
three quarters of an inch of liquid equivalent occurs across the
area. Snow ratios will be variable across the area, with higher
ratios further north. In addition, ratios will be best during
the aftn/eve, as strong lift intersects the dendritic growth
zone.

With this being a rather fast moving system, precip should be
ending by shortly after midnight from southwest to northeast. By
that point, most areas will have seen 6 to 12 inches of snow,
although slightly lower amounts look to occur for Ulster,
Dutchess, and Litchfield Counties, where some mixing may occur.
The highest totals look to be across the southern
Adirondacks/southern Greens. Because of the potential for both
heavy snowfall and moderate snow along with mixed precip, have
issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire CWA. Highs look to
mainly be in the 20s on Wednesday and should fall into the
single digits and teens for Wed night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Expect conditions to dry out going into Thursday as high pressure
system building into the forecast area due to upper level
convergence in the poleward entrance region of a jet streak. A
possibility of some lake effect snow downwind of Lake Ontario and in
the western Adirondacks. Moving into Friday afternoon a low pressure
system brought in from the north west will bring in a chance of
light snow accumulation into Saturday. Predictability is low due to
differences in the global models at this time. The GFS and ECMWF
both bring the precipitation in Friday afternoon into the evening
but there is no model agreement on timing of when the area will
clear out. Models suggest a possible precipitation event on Sunday
as snow or rain/snow mixture. The GFS and ECMWF bring the system
through our region however the Canadian tracks the system more
eastward keeping the precipitation mainly snow. Overall there is a
suggested warm trend over the long term forecast heading into next
week.

.AVIATION /05Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
VFR conditions are expected through tonight, then the potential
for MVFR conditions arrives Tuesday. Mid level clouds will
begin to stream in ahead of a quick moving upper level short
wave trough. Clouds will thicken and lower toward Tuesday
morning.

The winds will become light and variable to calm as weak high
pressure builds in at the surface. A light south to southwesterly
flow will develop Tuesday morning as the high shifts off to our
east.

.HYDROLOGY...
Near normal temperatures are anticipated tonight into tomorrow,
along with a few passing light snow showers or flurries. A
widespread moderate to heavy snowfall will occur on Wednesday
into Wednesday night, although southern areas may see some mixed
precipitation or rain in addition to the snow. Total liquid
equivalent amounts will generally be a half inch to one inch. Dry
weather is then expected on Thursday before some additional
light snow occurs on Friday. More precipitation in the form of a
wintry mix or rain is expected over the weekend as well,
although precipitation amounts and exact temperatures are still
rather uncertain at this time.

With precipitation expected primarily in the form of snow over
the next few days and no major warmups anticipated, any ice jams
frozen in place should remain where they are through at least
Friday. As a result, river levels are expected to remain fairly
steady through Friday as well. Over the weekend, some rises are
possible, although this will ultimately depend on how much
temperatures rise and how much liquid precipitation occurs,
which is still not known at this time.
