.SYNOPSIS...
A complex storm system will bring a widespread light to
moderate snowfall tonight into tomorrow, with the highest totals
across northern high terrain areas. Dry weather and gusty winds can
be expected Monday but an active weather pattern will bring chances
for snow and mixed precipitation again Tuesday and Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1201 AM EST...Snow continue to blossom a bit in the warm
advection over the southwest Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley,
and into the Saratoga Region. Sfc dewpts remain low based on the
NY MesoNet sites, but a fairly quick moistening of the column
was noted at KRME with dewpts in the upper teens. Not expecting
a lot of snow with this initial surge of warm advection, but
coatings to a half inch will be possible with an inch or so
over the southern Adirondacks.

The dry air at low levels will limit the coverage and intensity
of snow further downstream. These dry low-levels are evident in
the 00Z KALY sounding. Little if any snow is expected from
Albany and points south/east outside of the eastern Catskills.

As the clouds continue to thicken and lower this
morning,the south/southwest winds will increase to 10-20 mph
with some gusts to 30-35 mph in the Capital Region, as
temperatures will likely slowly rise in most areas through
daybreak, after the lows occur around midnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Boundary layer flow from the southwest will increase rapidly and
trend to south through the day over our region, increasing low
level forcing and isentropic lift. There should also be some
downsloping off the eastern Catskills and Helderbergs into parts
of the Hudson Valley and Capital District.

Boundary layer temperatures warm to near or just above freezing
from around the Capital District and Hudson Valley into the
Berkshires and Litchfield CT area midday through early evening.
So, complex enhancement of snow in higher terrain of the
southern Adirondacks, eastern Catskills and southern Green
mountains expected, which should be the areas that see mainly
all snow. Some mix with rain possible in the Capital District
and northern Berkshires as well as southern VT between the
Taconics and southern Green mountains where south to southeast
low level winds and associated low level warming are enhanced.
Intervals of rain or snow/rain mix are likely in the southern
Berkshires, mid Hudson Valley and Litchfield CT area.

With temperatures reaching the 30s, maybe around 40 southern
areas, any periods of light snow Sunday may not accumulate much
on pavement and may be limited on grassy and icy surfaces as
well as exposed objects. Snow rates should be heavy enough in
the higher terrain, though, for steady accumulations there but
not as efficient as would be at night.

Before steadier precipitation arrives in the afternoon, gusty
south winds may reach 30-40 mph at times close to the Capital
Region, as a combination of enhanced flow up the Hudson Valley,
and some downsloping off the Catskills enhance winds within a
relatively dry boundary layer with enhanced low level lapse
rates between mid morning and early afternoon.

There are strong signals of some semblance of a dry slot that
tracks into our area later Sunday afternoon and evening with
enhanced convergence and isentropic lift in the Taconics to
western New England later in the afternoon and evening. However,
considering the warm layer aloft in the Mid Hudson Valley,
central and southern Taconics, Litchfield CT area into the
southern Berkshires, just enhanced rain or mix there, while
enhanced snow possible in the southern Green mountains and
northern Berkshires.

Snow ratios should be relatively low as the best convergence,
isentropic lift and vertical motion is below the dendritic
growth zone. The dendritic growth zone is expected to be quite
considerably aloft until the leading edge of the strong cold
advection and upper deformation track into our region Sunday
evening and Sunday night.

By Sunday evening, enhanced thermal convergence and
frontogenesis from the boundary layer through 500 hPa coincident
with upper deformation should support one trailing band of
enhanced snowfall within the axis of strongest frontogenesis.
Frontogenesis and maximum vertical motion extends through the
lowering dendritic growth zone Sunday evening and night.
However, the moisture within the upper deformation zone retreats
north at the same time, so it is unclear what the extent and
intensity of any snow band would be that could add to snowfall
amounts Sunday night. Any snow within the band would have higher
snow to liquid ratios.

Here are some general final snow totals expected based on all
the complex considerations of evolving thermal profiles through
Sunday and Sunday night across the region, as well as areas of
upslope enhanced precipitation and downslope reduction of
precipitation, then the uncertainties of how much additional
snow with the upper deformation and cold front Sunday night.
Expecting just dustings to an inch in southern areas, less than
4 inches Central Mohawk Valley, Capital District to lower
elevations of southern VT and potentially up to 7 inches in the
southern Adirondacks, southern Green mountains and highest peaks
of the eastern Catskills.

No headlines being issued yet as snow forecasts will be more
refined tonight and will be considering the precipitation
occurring for greater than 12 hours. Areas with the potential
for 9 inches or more in 12 to 24 hours a bit isolated, so again,
no headlines as new guidance tonight will help us focus on more
refined areas for potential headlines.

Gusty west to northwest winds will spread across our region
behind the cold front Sunday night into early Monday with lows
in the teens to mid 20s but some single numbers northern areas.
Gusty west to northwest winds and cold advection with some
clearing Monday. Some lake effect snows could extend into
northern Herkimer and Hamilton Counties Monday as well. Highs
Monday in the upper 20s to mid 30s but mid to upper teens
northern areas.

High pressure builds south of our region Monday night and east
off the mid Atlantic through Tuesday. Another weak upper impulse
tracks quickly east Tuesday within the leading edge of warm
advection. There is very little moisture expected with this
upper energy and weak warm advection but enough for clouds and
some scattered snow shower/flurry activity. Highs Tuesday in the
upper 20s to mid 30s but mid 20s northern areas.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Unsettled conditions expected through the long term portion of
the forecast...

An active pattern is expected to continue through the mid/late
portion of the upcoming week, as phasing of northern/southern stream
energy infused with Gulf/Atlantic low level moisture looks to affect
the region for late Tuesday night through Wednesday, with yet
another possible phasing of northern/southern stream energy
for late Friday into Saturday.

Models remain consistent in bringing upper level energy from the
southern Rockies northeast toward the Great Lakes region, with
another northern stream system approaching from the northern Plains
by Tuesday night. A surface low is expected to develop in the lower
MS Valley, before tracking east/northeast through the Ohio Valley
into the northeast states Wednesday.

Broad isentropic lift ahead of this system is expected to allow snow
to develop across the region late Tuesday night. It appears that
both Atlantic and Gulf moisture will be tapped into, so this system
may be wetter than its predecessor. Initially, thermal profiles
suggest all snow through Wednesday morning. However, warmer air
aloft is expected to allow for a possible wintry mix or rain from
around the I-90 corridor and points south for the afternoon. There
remains some uncertainty regarding just how much warming aloft
occurs, but it appears that northern areas seem to stand the best
chance for mainly snow, while southern areas should see snow change
to a mix or rain. In between, there likely will be a transition
zone, and it is quite possible that low level cold air may be tough
to dislodge, introducing the potential for a zone of sleet/freezing
rain for Wednesday afternoon for central portions of the region,
close to the I-90 corridor. Trends will need to be watched closely,
as this system has the potential for widespread QPF in excess of 1".

Precipitation may change back to all snow before tapering off
Wednesday night, with some lake effect snow showers possibly
continuing into Thursday for the western Adirondacks/Mohawk Valley
region, and upslope areas across southern VT.

After a brief reprieve from precip, another system may approach from
the Great Lakes region for Friday night into Saturday, with some
possibility of another low redeveloping close to the mid Atlantic
coast. Again, thermal profiles should be cold enough for snow to
start, but another transition to a wintry mix or rain could occur
Saturday for at least southern areas.

Temperatures will fluctuate through the period, and have generally
accepted Superblend with the exception of leaning toward the colder
side of MOS for Wednesday, owing to the strength of a potential
upper level jet max translating east across southern Quebec into the
Canadian Maritimes, favoring a slower exodus of low level cold air
across the region. So, highs mainly in the 20s/lower 30s, and
overnight lows mainly in the single digits and teens, with some
locally colder areas across portions of the southern Adirondacks,
where some subzero readings are possible if any breaks in cloud
cover develop at night.

Overall, pcpn is expected to be above normal with temps slightly
below normal.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An area of low pressure will bring increasing chances of snow
and rain during the day Sunday, especially in the late afternoon
and evening hours. Through 12Z Sunday, mainly VFR conditions are
expected to continue thanks to dry air near the surface. A
couple of snow showers may impact KGFL from around sunrise
through the morning hours, so a TEMPO group was included for
that potential. Precipitation is expected to become greater in
coverage during the mid to late afternoon as an upper trough
approaches and surface low pressure strengthens to our south.
Precipitation type may begin as a brief period of snow or a
rain/snow mix outside of KPOU before turning to mainly rain in
the late evening. At KPOU, mainly rain is expected. At KGFL,
snow may persist a bit longer into the evening before mixing
with or turning to rain, with 1-3 inches of accumulation
possible. The remainder of the terminals should see little to no
accumulation. IFR vsby is possible with the onset of the
steadier precipitation in the mid to late afternoon, with some
IFR cigs also possible in the evening.

Southerly winds will remain gusty for the remainder of the night
to 25 kt at KALB, with some gusts of 20-25 kt also possible at
KPSF. Winds at KGFL/KPOU will be a bit lighter, with low-level
wind shear as winds at 2kft strengthen to around 40 kt. Winds
will strengthen during the day Sunday with some gusts of 25-35
kt possible at KALB/KPSF, and to 20-25 kt at KGFL. The winds at
KPOU are expected to remain lighter, so LLWS was continued there
through the TAF period. The gustiness should diminish in the mid
to late afternoon as the steadier precipitation sets in, so we
could be looking at a return to LLWS for some terminals.

A storm system is expected to bring a light to moderate
snowfall to the region for Sunday into Sunday night. Seasonable
temperatures are expected to start next week, with some
additional light snow showers possible. More precipitation in
the form of snow or mixed precipitation is expected towards the
middle of next week.

With precip expected primarily in the form of snow over the next
few days and no major warmups anticipated, any ice jams frozen
in place should remain where they are through the start of next
week. River levels are expected to remain fairly steady through
early next week as well.
