.SYNOPSIS...
Although temperatures won't be as frigid as recent days,
temperatures will still be below normal today with dry conditions. A
coastal storm will brush the region with some snow for Thursday
before another blast of bitter cold Arctic air and gusty winds
returns to the region for Thursday night into the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1230 PM EST...Surface high pressure is located to the
south of the region over the mid-Atlantic states. The south to
southwest flow around this high pressure area is allowing for
temps to be a little milder today than past days, although its
still rather cold, with readings in the single digits and teens.
While southern areas are fairly clear with some passing thin
high clouds are occurring across northern and high terrain
areas.
Dry weather is expected to continue through the day today as
the high pressure area slides eastward. High clouds will
continue to increase and thicken, especially across southern
areas, by evening.
Highs today won't be as frigid as recent days, although still
rather cold. Max temps look to range from the mid teens to mid
20s, which is still about 10 degrees below normal.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Active Wintry Weather for the Short Term Period...
Lots of hazards upcoming during the short term period and still
lots of questions and uncertainty. The current forecast is
rather low confidence and may be subject to change so please
stay updated with the latest forecast.
As been in the shown in the models for many days now, a rapidly
developing area of low pressure is expected to develop off the
Southeast coast today (Wednesday) and move northward for
tonight into Thursday. The models have been having trouble
deciding how this system storm will interact with a shortwave
trough moving through the northern stream (currently over the
Great Lakes) that will be taking on a negative tilt as it
approaches the Northeast coast.
For several days it has appeared that this system will be too
far east of have a large impact on our weather. While that still
may be the case, we do anticipate some snow for our area,
especially from the Hudson Valley on eastward due to the passing
upper level trough picking up some Atlantic moisture. There are
some solutions (such as the 06z NAM, some 00z GEFS members and
a few 03z SREF members) that show a closer track and more precip
from the actual coastal storm, including mesoscale banding,
that would produce a much larger impact, but its still uncertain
if this is a viable solution or not.
For now, we have gone with a Winter Weather Advisory for western
New England (southern VT, Berkshires, NW CT) for 4-6 inches of
snow in those areas. Further west, 1-4 inches looks to occur
across eastern New York. Snow looks to begin by daybreak for
southern and eastern areas and increase through the day, with
the steadiest/heaviest snowfall during the afternoon and early
evening hours. Snowfall looks to taper off for Thursday night,
as the rapidly deepening storm (950 mb low) moves towards
Atlantic Canada, although some upslope snowfall will linger
across southern VT. If the storm track is further west, we will
need to up snowfall amounts considerably and adjust headlines.
But will need to see a more consistent signals in the guidance
that this will be the case. In many times with these rapidly
developing cyclones, convection (which is not resolved well by
global models) will have a key role in determining exact storm
track, so we will have to watch the storms evolution closely
today.
Behind this storm, the main story will be the very gusty winds,
cold temperatures and frigid wind chills that move back into the
region for the remainder of the week and into the weekend.
Temperatures will be falling all of Thursday night and probably
won't rise much for during the day on Friday with temps in the
single digits or below zero. Actual air temps should be below
zero across the entire area for Friday night, as 850 hpa temps
fall to nearly -30 C.
Wind Chill Watch has been issued for most of the area for
Thursday Night into Saturday, with the lowest winds chills
expected Friday night into early Saturday. Lowest wind chill
values look to be 25 to 50 below zero, with the coldest readings
over the Adirondacks and southern VT. Even in the Capital
Region, wind chill readings around -25 to -30 look to be a good
possibility.
These winds chills will be fueled by gusty west to northwest
winds for Thursday night through Friday due to the strong
pressure gradient in place. Some gusts may reach 30-40 mph at
times. While they look to fall just short of advisory criteria,
we will need to watch this closely.
Some lake-effect snow will occur as well for Thursday night into
Friday. With the expected flow in place, this looks to impact
the Mohawk Valley into Schoharie County, with at least a few
inches of accumulation. The heaviest accumulations may wind up
remaining west of the area over central NY, which is typical
during extreme instability setups.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The core of the coldest air will be over the region Saturday and
Saturday night with wind chill headlines continuing. Winds through
the boundary layer are expected to be northwest to north. So, any
lake effect snow shower activity should be mainly west of our area
but could just skim the western Mohawk Valley and Schoharie Valley.
Highs Saturday from around zero to mid single numbers but remaining
below zero in higher terrain. Lows Saturday night could be quite
extreme as winds are expected to trend to light to calm and
radiational cooling could be optimized. Lows Saturday night should
be between 10 below and 25 below zero across much of our area with 5
below to 10 below in southern areas.
Deep mean upper troughing lifts north with flat upper ridging
building in Sunday but another cold upper low begins to drop south
in eastern Canada causing broad upper troughing over eastern North
America as another upper impulse tracks around the southern
periphery of the developing broad mean upper troughing, toward our
region. Clouds will be on the increase through the day Sunday with
steady warming at the boundary layer on west to southwest low level
flow. Some chances for snow are possible by Sunday afternoon in
northern and western areas. Highs Sunday in the teens.
Stronger warm advection and upper dynamics along with isentropic
lift and low level jet forcing Sunday night through Monday night
should result in snow changing to a mix in many areas as
temperatures warm into the 20s to lower 30s Monday and then hold
steady Monday night as warming aloft occurs. There could be a mix
of snow, sleet and freezing rain in some areas Monday night into
early Tuesday morning before the system departs and precipitation
becomes snow showers. Considering how frozen the ground is, guidance
may be too warm with surface temperatures through the period and
even if temperatures do get above freezing, there could still be
chances for freezing rain, again due to the very frozen ground.
By Tuesday, mixed precipitation changes back to snow and rain
showers due to the start of cooling aloft. Highs Tuesday in the 30s
but upper 20s northern areas. Based on the current guidance high
temperatures would be in the morning Tuesday with temperatures
falling in the afternoon but we have lots of time to see how this
will evolve.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR conditions expected to prevail through roughly 06Z Thursday.
Other than intervals of thin high clouds through the day high clouds
will thicken this afternoon and evening. The leading edge of some
snow well ahead of the developing storm offshore could approach KPOU
by 09Z, to KPSF by 10Z, KALB by 11Z and KGFL by 13Z. Some
potentially steadier snow could begin by 10Z at KPOU with MVFR
ceilings and visibilities. Visibilities will lower to IFR by
late morning with some IFR cigs possible as well.
Winds will be south-southwest around 3-7 kts through this
afternoon, trending to calm this evening. Winds become light
north at 6 kts or less after midnight. Winds will pick up on
Thursday out of the north at 10 to 20 kts by late morning with
some higher gusts as we approach 18Z.

Very cold temperatures are expected through the remainder of the
week and into the weekend, which will continue to allow for
river and lake ice to increase and thicken.
Some snowfall is expected late tonight through tomorrow, with
the heaviest totals across eastern areas. This snow won't have
any immediate impact on rivers and streams. Some additional snow
showers are expected across western areas due to lake-effect
for Thursday night into Friday as well.
With very cold temperatures in place, isolated freeze-up ice
jams may occur over the weekend across the Adirondacks and
southern Green Mountains of Vermont. River gauges may experience
erratic readings due to the ice. River and stream levels are
expected to hold steady or slightly rise due to ice build up in
the river channels.
