...HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 AM EDT THURSDAY...

* Locations...southern and western Adirondacks, Mohawk Valley 
  and Capital Region, Schoharie County, the Lake George Saratoga 
  Region, northern Taconics and Berkshires.

* Winds...West 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.

* Timing...Strongest winds this afternoon through tonight.

* Impacts...Downed trees, tree limbs and power lines, which may 
  cause scattered to widespread power outages. Difficult travel 
  conditions, especially for high profile vehicles.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low pressure system will approach from the Midwest and
Lower Great Lakes Region this afternoon. A warm front ahead of
the low pressure system will bring precipitation back into
eastern New York and western New England. A soaking rainfall is
possible tonight before a strong cold front brings showers and
isolated thunderstorms for Wednesday, as much colder
temperatures and blustery winds return for Wednesday night into
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1245 PM EDT, areas of light precipitation have overspread
much of the region from the I-90 corridor southward, including
portions of southern VT. P-type has been mainly snow for
elevations above 1200 feet according to NY Mesonet webcams,
with a rain/snow mix below, except mainly rain across the mid
Hudson Valley and NW CT.

There was even been some snow mixed in with the rain at KALB
shortly after it started.

Expect precipitation to continue expanding in areal coverage
through this afternoon. For elevations above 1000 feet, snow may
transition to sleet and rain by later afternoon, with some
pockets of freezing rain possible, mainly for elevations above
1800 feet. Ice accretion on some shaded, untreated exposed
objects of between one tenth and one quarter of an inch could
occur in these highest elevations.

Snow/sleet accumulations of a coating to less than an inch this
afternoon for elevations above 1200 feet, with some scattered
coatings even possible in some valley areas north of I-90.

High temps for the day have already been reached, with wet bulb
cooling dropping temps back down into the mid/upper 30s in lower
elevations shortly after precipitation begins, and lower/mid 30s
for higher terrain. Once these temps drop, they should then hold
nearly steady through late afternoon/early evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High Wind Watch remains in effect for the southern Adirondacks,
Mohawk Valley/Capital Region and Lake George/Saratoga region as
well as southern VT for Wednesday afternoon and night...

Tonight...As the wet bulb cooling effects linger into the early
evening north and east of the Capital Region. Temps will be at
there coldest state, but then rise after midnight from the 30s
and into the 40s to lower 50s. The warm front will attempt to
punch through the forecast area. There could be a few rumbles of
thunder over the northern zone in the stratiform pcpn shield,
as the Showalter values fall below 0C. The pcpn may transition
to spotty light rain or drizzle south and east of the Capital
Region.

Wednesday...Some minor timing difference with the track of the
deepening and intensifying cyclone through the eastern Great
Lakes Region and into the St Lawrence River Valley and southeast
Canada WED morning into the afternoon. The placement is similar
on the GFS/NAM/EC/GEFS but the timing could make a big
difference on the cold front and its associated narrow cold
frontal band that will whip through the region. A high shear and
low instability environment will be in place. Weak instability
combined with steepening lapse rates and a dynamic system should
allow for a broken line of convection or a fine line to move
across the forecast area in the very late morning through the
afternoon. Some stronger winds may translate to the sfc from
aloft that may yield wind damage. A concern for less wind with
the line is the degree of cloudiness and the strong low-level
inversion in place on the model soundings in the morning. The
CAMS including the 3-km NAM nest are showing a convective line
potential, and we kept a slight chance of thunderstorms across
the entire forecast area with the greatest threat from southern
VT/Capital Region/eastern Catskills south and east.

The mid and upper trough turns negatively tilted during the
afternoon. The low level wind fields look impressive along and
behind the front. The best MSLP pressure falls occur into the
afternoon on the order of 10-12 hPa/6-hrs as the intense cyclone
races in southeast Quebec and intensifies to 980-985 hPa. The
best rises with the rise-fall isallobaric couplet into the early
evening are from Albany north and west. Overall, the current
High Wind Watch looks fine from the Capital Region north and
west. Our confidence was not great enough to expand it further
south and east after collaboration with neighboring offices. We
think wind advisories may be needed in those areas. The 10-m
winds on the GFS MOS crank up to 25-29 kts at KALB in the
afternoon due to funneling over westerly winds down the Mohawk
Valley. Highs will be in the mid 40s to lower 50s mainly west of
the Hudson River Valley with mid 50s to around 60F to the east.
Temps will fall in the mid to late afternoon west of the Hudson
River Valley quickly in the cold advection.

Wed night...The best momentum transfer may occur right before
and just after sunset, when 40-45 kts winds 1.5-2.5 kft AGL may
try to mix to the sfc. In the post frontal cold advection, the
NAM is hinting at H925 winds of 40-45+ kts funneling down the
Mohawk Valley. H850 temps tumble to -13C to -18C across the
forecast area with the coldest readings over the Adirondacks.
Some lake enhanced snow showers may deposit light snow accums
over the western Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley and northern
Catskills. Lows fall back into the teens and 20s with some
single digits values in the southern Dacks. Wind Chills will
feel like Winter!

Thursday...Brisk and cold conditions continue with some lake
effect or upslope snow showers and flurries for locations west
of the Hudson River Valley. The 00Z GEFS depict H850 1 to 3 STD
DEVS below normal over the region. High temps will be 10 to 15
degrees below normal with generally upper 30s to mid 40s in the
lower elevations, and 20s to mid/upper 30s over the hill towns
and mtns.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The period starts out Thursday night with a deepening cyclone
tracking eastward across the upper Great Lakes, while a warm front
approaches our region from the south and west. It appears the first
half of the night will be dry, but isentropic lift will increase
substantially by early Friday morning resulting in snow developing.
As the cyclone tracks eastward into southern Quebec on Friday,
relatively warmer air should advance northward into parts of our
area, resulting in snow changing to rain for most valley locations.
It looks like there will be enough cold air in the northwest part of
the area (Adirondacks) for precip to remain as snow. The system's
cold front will cross the region Friday afternoon. There is then the
potential for rain to change back to snow before the precip ends
Friday evening, depending on how much precip lags behind the cold
front and how quickly the colder air rushes in. At the very least,
the higher terrain areas, especially north and west of Albany have
the potential for a plowable snowfall with lesser amounts and
greater uncertainty farther south and east.

Brisk and cold conditions in store for Friday night in wake of the
cold front passage. Will mention scattered snow showers, as a
secondary cold front moves across the region which may pick up some
lake moisture as it passes through. The air mass will be cold enough
to generate some lake effect snow showers in wake of the front, with
lake - air temp differentials resulting in conditional lake-induced
instability. Lake effect snow showers may linger into Saturday with
a continued cold westerly flow regime, although they would likely
become more cellular than banded due to diurnal effects this time of
year. Best chances will be across the western Adirondacks. Elsewhere
it will be continued cold and brisk for early April.

The flow is expect to become more northwesterly Saturday night into
Sunday, which will allow for some lake effect snow showers to move
across the SW Adirondacks, western Mohawk valley and eventually the
northern Catskills. Cold temperatures continue as well.

Models start to diverge significantly for Monday, as to how far
north a developing wave of low pressure will track. The GFS is
indicating a more amplified pattern, with a snow to rain scenario
for much of our area. However, the ECMWF is depicting more of a
zonal flow with the potential wave of low pressure suppressed well
south of our region. Also of note, the CMC is showing a more
southerly track too. With such differing solutions will mention low
chance pops at this time.

.AVIATION /17Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Precipitation has started everywhere except KGFL, where a mix of
rain and snow should begin by 19Z. Rain and snow will occur at
KALB, KGFL and KPSF through about 20Z-22Z when it should become
all rain. KPOU will see just rain. Visibilities will remain
MVFR, generally 3SM or better through tonight but some very
brief bursts of precipitation could drop visibilities at 2 SM or
less but not long enough to put into TAFs until upstream
conditions suggest more intense precipitation and can amend if
necessary.

Ceilings are lowering and all sites have MVFR ceilings except
KGFL and KGFL will see ceilings lower to MVFR around or shortly
after 19Z. Ceilings will lower to the borderline of MVFR and
IFR tonight, around 1000 feet, and will hold at around 1000 feet
through Wednesday morning.

There is a break in the coverage of steadier precipitation seen
in sources of guidance between midnight and mid morning
Wednesday, but there could still be some patchy drizzle or
isolated to scattered showers. After about 09Z Wednesday,
indicating VCSH at all TAF sites since the timing of the band of
showers associated with the cold front is timed for sometime
after 15Z but timing is very uncertain and coverage again looks
to be potentially limited. Visibilities look to be predominantly
VFR Wednesday morning until the organized showers along the
cold front affect the region later Wednesday morning.

Winds will be southeast to south at around 10 Kt this afternoon
with gusts near 20 Kt but a little lighter at KPOU. Winds
tonight are expected to be southeast to south at less than 10 Kt
then south at 10 to 15 Kt after daybreak Wednesday morning.
South winds will gust 15 Kt to 25 Kt Wednesday morning,
especially at KALB and KPSF.

A strong low pressure system will approach from the

.HYDROLOGY...
A widespread precipitation event is likely for today into
Wednesday. Liquid precipitation amounts will range from about
three quarters of an inch to an inch and a quarter with the
higher amounts over the northern basins such a the Mohawk Valley
northward into the southern Adirondacks. This event is likely
to be mainly rain with increasingly mild temperatures, although
some mixed precipitation across higher terrain will be possible
in this evening.

Runoff from a combination of snowmelt and rain could produce
isolated localized flooding, but the amount of absorption of the
rainfall by snow pack is still to be determined Tuesday into
Wednesday, which may limit the runoff a little, especially in
the Adirondacks and southern Greens. Widespread main stem river
flooding is not expected at this time.

Much colder and drier conditions return Wednesday night into
Thursday. The next system brings some light snow and rain
Thursday night into Friday.
