northeast and just off the southeast and Mid Atlantic coasts
today into tonight. Low pressure then sits off the Carolina
coast Monday into Tuesday. High pressure will build over the
area Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 500 AM EST Sunday...
Early this morning, low pressure was located over extreme srn
GA. Latest radar showed pcpn shield extending well north of the
low up thru GA, SC, and into NC. As of 430 am, pcpn has moved
into extrm SW/Scntrl VA, and NE NC. Snow was being reported
inland/piedmont locations (ROA/DAN/AVC), while rain was being
reported near the coast (ECG). Based on a blend of the latest\
short term (NAM/GFS) and mesoscale (HRRR) model data, have
adjusted Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories
over the CWA. Went with Winter Storm Warnings over the VA
Piedmont counties along and west of I-95, along with Northampton
county NC fm this morning into early Mon morning. Went with
Winter Weather Advisories over other VA counties just east of
I-95 (from Caroline county south to Southampton county) fm this
morning into early Mon morning with amts of 1 to 4 inches
possible.
The low pressure area will track NE and just off the SE and Mid
Atlc coasts today into tonight. This will result in pcpn
spreading nwrd into and acrs the CWA during today. As the low
moves NE this morning and aftn, it will spread abundant moisture
in fm the south and fm the Atlc ocean, while also setting up
very strong frontogenetic forcing acrs the srn 1/3 of VA and
into nrn NC. Warmer air being pulled in fm the east will help to
limit much if any snow accumulations east of I-95, with mainly
rain expected in the ern third of the area for the event.
At this time, it looks like the highest snow totals (5-10
inches with locally higher amts possible) will occur south of
Route 460 and west of I-95 in the scntrl VA piedmont. This is
the area where the best frontogenetic forcing sets up, higher
QPF amts, and where the pcpn will be snow thru the entire
event. Farther north and west of I-95 in the cntrl VA piedmont,
snow totals of 3-6 inches are expected. There is still some
question as to how far north any heavier pcpn/snow (QPF) gets
during this event, as there could be a sharp cutoff to the north
of where the strongest frontogenetic forcing sets up.
Highs today will range fm the lower 30s in the VA piedmont west
of I-95, to the lower to mid 40s near the Bay and coastal areas.
In addition, with the tightening gradient between the high to
the north and the low to the south, gusty NE winds can be
expected especially near the coast. As such, a wind advisory
is in effect for Virginia Beach and Currituck for winds gusting
to 45 to 50 mph.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 500 AM EST Sunday...
Expect the precipitation to gradually diminish and end fm NW to
SE late tonight into Mon morning, although the warm nose hangs
on, as there is very little cold advection as the system moves
up the coast. As such, there actually may be a little freezing
rain/drizzle overnight across the western tier and with that in
mind, have opted to keep any headlines going until 09z Mon
despite the precip diminishing.
Expect improving conditions acrs most of the area fm Mon aftn
thru Mon night, as high pressure starts to build in fm the NNW.
However, lingering low pressure off the Carolina coast will
maintain more clouds and a slgt to sml chance for pcpn over
extrm scntrl/SE VA and NE NC. Highs on Mon will range fm the
upper 30s to mid 40s. Lows Mon night will range thru the 20s
acrs most of the area, and in the lower to mid 30s over SE VA
and NE NC.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 100 PM EST Saturday...
The models are in decent agreement through Thursday as strong
surface high pressure settles over the region on Tuesday into
Wednesday before weak warm advection begins Wednesday night in
Thursday as the surface high retreats NE into the Canadian
Maritimes and the North Atlantic. This will allow for dry
weather through Thursday with temperatures slow moderating from
the low to mid 40s on Tuesday into the upper 40s to the mid 50s
on Thursday.
The models begin to diverge on their handling of the next
trough that dives into the Central and Southern plains from
late Thursday into Saturday. Both the GFS and ECMWF close off
the upper low and develop an extremely deep surface cyclone
across the OHio Valley and into the Northeast. The models have
big timing differences by about 12 to 18 hours with the GFS the
faster model to have the cold front sweep through the area some
time Friday in both the 6z and 12z runs while the ECMWF has the
front cross the area on Saturday. For now have gone a little
quicker with the front going through some time Friday night with
a band of showers and potential a strong increase of winds. But
with the uncertainty will have to continue to monitor how this
system develops not only in strength but also timing.

.AVIATION /13Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 205 AM EST Sunday...
Low pressure is tracking ENE in vicinity of the nrn Gulf coast
as of 06z, with high pressure centered over PA/NY. Moisture is
spreading newd ahead of the approaching low with high clouds
overspreading the region. Cigs are expected to lower after 12z
with pcpn arriving from the SW. Pcpn should begin as SN for RIC
and remain SN for much of the day, and potentially becoming a
mix of RA/SN later today. Farther E, mainly RA although PHF
could begin as SN or a mix of RA/SN. IFR cigs are expected by
midday through the aftn and into the evening, with vsby aob 2sm
in SN and 2-4sm in RA. Becoming windy along the coast of SE
VA/NE NC with a NE wind of 20-25kt and gusts to 35-40kt.
Conditions slowly improve later tonight.
Low pressure lingers off the Outer Banks Monday into Monday
night resulting in locally breezy conditions for ORF/ECG. High
pressure prevails Tuesday through Thursday.

As of 420 AM EST Sunday...
Low pressure is approaching from the WSW early this
morning as high pressure remains anchored N of the region. An ENE
wind will increase to 10-20kt with seas building to 3-5ft, and waves
of 2-3ft in the Bay. Low pressure then deepens off the Carolina
coast this aftn into tonight. A NE wind will increase to 15-25kt N,
to 25-30kt with gusts of 35-40kt for the Lower Bay, Lower James, and
30-40kt for the ocean S of Cape Charles and the Sound. Wind gusts to
45kt are expected for the srn ocean zones. Seas build to 5-8ft N, to
8-12ft S (12-15ft possible off the Currituck Outer Banks), and 3-5ft
waves in the Bay, and locally 4-8ft in the Mouth of the Bay. Gale
warnings have been added for the Lower James and ocean from
Parramore Is. to Chincoteague. Ramp-up SCAs have been cancelled and
other Gale and SCA flags remain as is, with the exception of SCAs
being extended into Monday.
Low pressure pulls offshore tonight into Monday. However, secondary
development is possible by Monday night, before tracking offshore
Tuesday. SCA conditions likely linger into early this week. High
pressure returns by midweek.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 725 AM EST Sunday...
Low pressure will strengthen off the Carolina coast today into
tonight. A strong NE wind is expected to push tidal anomalies
to 1.0-1.0 ft above normal from the Lower Bay S to Outer Banks
Currituck. This has the potential to produce minor tidal
flooding tonight into Monday. High tide this evening is the
lower of the astronomical, with the higher occurring Monday
morning. Additionally, minor beach erosion is expected due to
large breaking nearshore waves.
A high surf advisory is in effect for VA Beach and Outer Banks
Currituck from late this aftn through Monday morning.
