.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move across the southern Mid Atlantic region
late tonight...and will deepen as it moves off the Carolina coast
Monday morning and off the Delmarva Monday night. High pressure
returns on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Latest surface analysis reveals 1030+ mb sfc high pressure
centered over the northern Plains, ridging ESE through the Great
Lakes and on into eastern VA and the Delmarva. An inverted sfc
trough is developing from the Tn Valley into western MD and
southern PA. Cloudy with occasional light rain continuing across
far southern VA and NE NC, mainly dry and mostly cloudy
elsewhere (except for some sun over the far N). Upper flow
has gradually turned to the W-SW in response to the digging
upper low to the west. For this evening, expect a lull in the
rain over NC, though will maintain a chc PoP through the
evening.

Overall, models are in a fairly decent agreement with the 12z
suite, particularly with respect to rapid cyclogenesis offshore
of the Coastal Carolinas Monday, eventually lifting NE and
deepening rapidly offshore of the Tidewater Mon evening.
Weakening overrunning will likely result in a brief lull in
light rain over the south this evening, ramping back up twds
midnight into Monday morning. Precipitation will remain
primarily rain tonight, with some sleet/snow far NW mixing in
late.

Forecast for Monday still remains one of lower than average
confidence, primarily due to marginal temperatures Monday
morning into the afternoon, with the result likely adding up to
a messy mixed pcpn scenario inland. As is often the case, pcpn
intensity and sfc temps will control snow accumulations (i.e.
rain/sleet/snow mix goes over to wet snow during heavier pcpn
intensities, then back to mixed pcpn in lighter intensities).
Went below MOS given expected wet-bulbing/evaporational cooling
with highs remaining in the upper 30s to around 40 F most areas
with lwr- mid 40s SE VA/NE NC and eastern shore. Temperatures
in most locations will fall a little in the aftn as precip
intensity increases. As for snowfall accumulations, model
consensus suggest best potential for some localized banding and
therefore snow accumulations to around 2" will reside over
south central VA from around noon through late aftn/early
evening. This will be the time when main transfer of energy has
shifted completely to the coastal low, with rapid deepening
occurring. This band is expected to slide east to the coast by
00Z/Tue and the lift will be impressive as it does so. The
limiting factor farther to the east will be the warmer airmass
where model consensus is for 1000-850mb thicknesses of ~1310m
(would take a lot too cool/wet-bulb that to snow/sleet).
Depending on how the low tracks, it is not impossible that areas
of SE VA and NE NC see more snow Mon evening, but confidence in
that is very low, thus the advisory is in effect only for
portions of the Piedmont where thermal profiles are at least
marginally favorable. Elsewhere across central VA including most
of metro Richmond, see the potential for a slushy snowfall
accumulation around ~1" (mainly grassy/elevated areas).

Slightly quicker timing results in a higher confidence that
Wintry wx threat will be quicker to abate for much of the area
Monday night, and lowered POP/Snow totals account for these
lowered totals, but again still some uncertainty during this
period and will need to watch this closely. Pcpn moves out
before midnight out west, and after midnight along the coast.
Lows upr 20s- lwr 30s.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Becoming partly/mostly sunny Tue with a gusty NW flow and highs
remaining well below normal/mainly in the mid-upper 40s (around
50 F far S). Cold/mostly clear to partly cloudy and dry Tue
night with lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Upper low progged
to be slowly shifting ENE into New england on Wed, with a
significant shortwave trough rotating around the base of this
feature and traversing through the mid Atlc and Carolinas. At
this time, it appears downslope flow at lower/mid levels will
inhibit measurable precip across the AKQ CWA. However, cannot
rule out a few isolated/scattered rain/snow showers during the
late morning through the aftn. Skies will avg partly to mostly
cloudy.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Overall pattern becoming more progressive during the extended
period. Wed night/Thu time frame still begins with cold upper
N/NE of the region but this will be moving offshore of New
England, allowing thu to trend a little warmer than Wed (though
still remaining below normal). Upper flow further deamplifies
Thursday night through Saturday, allowing for temperatures to
return to or above normal by Saturday. Expect generally dry
weather Thursday through Friday night, but models suggest the
potential for showers Saturday/Saturday night, as shortwave
energy moves out of the Midwest toward the region.

High temperatures Thursday are expected to be mainly in the
upper 40s to mid 50s, mid 50s to lower 60s on Friday (coolest
on the Lwr MD/VD Eastern Shore). Warmer still on Saturday with
high temps in the upper 50s east to the mid 60s south/southwest.
Lows Wednesday night in the mid 20s western and northern
portions to low 30s southeast, then mainly in the 30s next
Thursday night, and upper 30s west to mid 40s SE next Friday
night.

.AVIATION /20Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Predominate VFR conditions across area terminals through the
initial portion of the 18Z TAF period. Exception will be at
KECG, where occasional light rain persists through late
afternoon, possibly bringing flight conditions down to MVFR.
Winds remain generally light from the ENE to NE, but increasing
at KECG/KORF/KPHF. Deteriorating conditions/ IFR CIGS and VSBYS
in rain by Monday, with pcpn mixing with or changing to wet
snow at KRIC/KSBY, and probably KPHF. Strong N to NE winds
potentially gusting to ~30kt at KORF/KECG, ~20-25 kt at KPHF and
KSBY, and well as near the coast Mon through Mon night.

OUTLOOK...
Improving conditions, becoming VFR Mon night and Tue as high
pressure returns. Upper trof rotating through the area Wed/early
Thu could bring brief periods of MVFR ceilings, especially at
KSBY.

.MARINE...
Weak sfc hi pres will sit invof the local waters (most of) today
w/ a frontal boundary remaining just S (aligned E-W) over NC.
Lo pres will be taking shape over the gulf states today...then
track E to off the NC coast by Mon afternoon. After that...the
lo will be intensifying offshore as it moves ENE (away from the
coast) Mon night-Tue. NE winds will be increasing into Mon then
a period of strong SCA (20-30 kt) or even gales (srn waters) -
35-40 kt - expected late Mon into Mon night (as the storm
intensifies). Have raised SCA for all areas either beginning
tonight or Mon...and have hoisted a gale watch for the ocean
waters S of Parramore Isl VA and the mouth of the Ches Bay (for
gusts to 40 kt...esp Mon eve). SCAs will linger into/through a
good part of Tue as winds become NW and remain strong due to
CAA. Improving conditions mid week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Increasing NE winds into Mon will result in a slow rise in tidal
anomalies. Period of tide anomalies avgg close to 1 ft above
normal expected Mon eve/Mon night (potential to 1.5 ft above
normal invof mouth of the Ches Bay and srn ocean waters). Did
raise levels at most places...but kept forecasts below minor
flooding thresholds for now.
