.UPDATE...Afternoon mixing and a continued gradient have re-
enhanced winds near Downtown Juneau to around 70 mph gusts this
afternoon. Therefore, we have re-issued the high wind warning for
downtown and adjacent neighborhoods, this time through 10 PM. We
will monitor observations through the evening to determine whether
any extension through Sunday is necessary.

SHORT TERM.../Through Monday night/ Continued outflow winds
across the north and another snow event for the southern panhandle
are the main stories for the short range today.
Cold outflow winds continue to blow in many areas of the northern
panhandle. Gusts as high as 60 mph have been observed at Skagway
where a high wind warning continues through this evening. The Taku
winds around Juneau have also been active as well but not to the
extent that they were yesterday. Peak gusts have mainly been
observed near 50 mph for most of the day at Douglas, Thane, and
the Rock Dump. With cross barrier flow starting to diminish
decided to cancel the high wind warning for Juneau around midday.
However, gusts up to 50 mph are still likely in that area. The
outflow is also bringing in rather cold temps which combined with
with the winds is creating some very cold wind chills in some
areas. White Pass in particular saw wind chills as low as 50 below
last night. With winds starting to diminish wind chills should
not be as brutal tonight but will still be around 40 below. A wind
chill advisory remain up for White Pass through tomorrow morning.
Winds should diminish into monday as the Yukon high weakens and
the southern panhandle trough moves off to the east.
Round 2 for snow for the southern panhandle is on its way for
tonight into tomorrow as a weak low moves south of the panhandle
over northern Haida Gwaii. Some disagreement still present between
models with the GFS still displaying a more northerly and slower
track then most other models. Elected to trend more toward Nam and
some Canadian to get a decent middle ground on the track of this
system. There is also a trend toward a slightly colder
environment for the south with NE surface winds reinforcing the
colder air already present. Precip bands are expected to set up
further south then the last event with the northern and central
areas of Prince of Wales and Clarence Strait set to receive the
higher precip rates. Amounts are expected to range from 2 to 6
inches for most areas with amounts limited by the fast moving
nature of this system, and some warmer air trying to work in.
Winter weather advisories remain up for the southern two forecast
zones in the panhandle for tonight into tomorrow.
After that things quiet down as outflow starts to calm down.
Temperatures were raise a little into Monday as outflow lightens.
LONG TERM.../Monday night through Saturday as of 10 pm Friday/
In the mid range portion of the forecast minor changes were made
with a touch of the operational models in preference to WPC from
earlier today which seemed to be a little slow on tracking weather
through the eastern gulf and Southeast Alaska. Used portions of
the 00z GFS and the 12z ECMWF blend to do some adjustments. For
the later half of the week, another bubble of high pressure is
starting to slide out of the Alaskan interior through Northwest
Canada. As a result winds Tuesday/Wednesday will be moderately
strong in the outflow areas around Lynn Canal, although as the
high center moves away after mid week winds will weaken slightly
toward the weekend. Higher pressure will build over the central
gulf with a trough of lower pressure extending northward from the
British Columbia coast across the southern panhandle towards
Prince William Sound by mid- week.
While it may be a bit presumptuous to say there is a steady trend
in guidance toward a more northward track of the gulf system
approaching Southeast Monday night, we think the mean trend exists
sufficiently that we had to bring it closer to shore and raise the
probability of accumulating snow for much of the Panhandle
Tuesday, and a mix in the far south. But another perhaps more
impactful issue is hinted at by various solutions, and that is a
surge of warmer air into the heart of the central Panhandle at
some point between Tuesday and Wednesday, giving much of the north
central Panhandle a potential brief mix with or changeover to
rain over a fresh snowpack. But for now, we have merely bumped up
temperatures by a few degrees during the period and mainly suggest
snow for the central Panhandle. Interestingly, there is support
of a feature riding northward to the west coast of North America
with some characteristics of an atmospheric river. At this point,
we feel its likely track will be southeast into the central BC
coast.
The Tuesday system will temporarily puncture the mean ridging
that has set up from the gulf of Alaska into the Bering Strait
region for next week. As such, after it passes, we do sense a
moderating trend at least in temperatures aloft. However, given
some clearing with some outflow next week, surface temperatures
may once again lower enough to support another potential snow/rain
event in the offing for next weekend.
Confidence is high for precipitation Tuesday/Tuesday night but
lower for precipitation type especially in the central Panhandle.
There is broader confidence in increasing rain chances for the
south, over snow or a mix considering a more progressive pattern
with plenty of chances for southerly flow.
