early Thursday, while high pressure persists over Western

.SYNOPSIS...An upper level high over the northeast Pacific will
continue to keep the vast majority of the panhandle dry through
Thursday, while directing precipitation primarily into the
northeast gulf coast. This pattern begins to break down later
this week with a return of gales to the gulf waters on Thursday as
a surface front pushes northeast. On Friday, there is potential
for rapid cyclone intensification as a low develops and advances
north across the gulf; however, the ultimate track of the system
remains uncertain.

.SHORT TERM...The upper high pressure in place over the northeast
Pacific will continue to shield the southern Panhandle from
precipitation through most of the short term, directing
preciptiation primarily into the northeast gulf coast. Some very
light precipitation remains possible through the evening hours for
the northern Panhandle; however, impacts associated with it will
be minimal.

Wednesday is not all that interesting from a weather standpoint.
Temperatures rise back above freezing and rain will persist along
the northeast gulf coast.

As Thursday progresses, the upper level pattern begins to shift
favoring a more active pattern for the eastern gulf. This will be
seen through a gale force surface front, which pushes northeast
through the day. While this will provide a wet day for northeast
gulf coast and possibly portions of the northern inner channels,
the rest of the panhandle will stay dry. Winds will remain at
minimum over the inner channels with some enhancement occurring
over the E-W orientated channels late as the pressure gradient
increases. Dependent upon the speed in which the upper high slides
out of our area, the southern outer coast may see a bit of
precipitation late Thursday night.

Overall not much change to the beginning of the forecast. Most
changes were focused on Thursday and Friday to account for the
fronts that push through the gulf. Favored the 12Z NAM and GFS for
adjustments to Thursday's forecast. Friday's changes were made in
coordination with WFO Anchorage. All models are indicating
significantly stronger winds than what was officially being
forecast, even though models differ on timing, track, and
intensity of a rapidly developing low that enters the gulf from
the south. Placement and timing of the strongest winds are likely
to shift as the day draws nearer.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Monday/Amplified upper pattern will
continue Thursday into the weekend. Strong ridging aloft over the
Panhandle Thursday will gradually get pushed eastward into BC as
deep trough amplifies over the Gulf and NPAC. Thus deep layer
moist southerly flow will overspread the Panhandle from the west
by Friday. Models differ on the strength and position of surface
features, but the general idea is for a return of the warm, wet
pattern we had been in for much of the month of November. Some
snow may fall at the onset of the precipitation on Friday, mainly
over the far northern inner channels, but snow levels once again
rise and rain should predominate at sea level through the early
part of next week.

Winds should also be on the increase over the eastern Gulf by
Friday as a front and any associated surface lows push eastward.

For the weekend into early next week, most ensemble guidance is
calling for a very strong and active zonal Pacific jet to develop
and nose into the western Gulf. This will likely lead to the
continuation of the strong onshore flow with periods of windy
conditions and moderate to heavier rainfall potential. Those
hopeful for some snow will likely continue to be disappointed at
least through the end of this forecast period.
