The National Weather Service in Juneau has cancelled the High
Wind Warning. 

Winds are diminishing across the area early this morning. Winds
gusted as high as 77 mph during late Saturday evening. Wind gusts
up to 50 mph may still occur early this morning.

This will be the final statement on this event.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Sun night/ Wet and windy weekend expected
for a good portion of the panhandle and gulf as 965 mb low settles
into the central gulf. Wide spread storm force winds are expected
across the gulf tonight into Sat night with wave heights reaching
nearly 30 feet. That wind will start to advance inland Sat with
gusts increasing throughout the day. A high wind warning has been
issued for Hydaburg and Craig for Sat afternoon for gusts up to 60
mph. Gusts up to 40 to 50 mph are likely for the rest of the
southern panhandle and outer coast. At the same time, strong NE
pressure gradients along the northern coast mountains will product
strong outflow in the northern inner channels. Conditions will
also be favorable for a synoptically driven taku wind event for
Downtown Juneau and Douglas Sat evening (cross barrier flow of 50
to 70 kt, and good critical level at least to start with). Decided
to go ahead and upgrade the high wind watch to a warning starting
late Sat afternoon for gusts to 60 mph.

That is not the only concern with this system. Many places in the
panhandle have cooled off and will continue to cool off tonight.
Thus when the precip starts up tomorrow afternoon and evening many
places in the north will likely start out as snow. The question
then becomes a matter of how much. The Icy Strait corridor will
likely stay cold enough for snow into late sat night, but easterly
downslope flow will curtail qpf amounts. Current thinking
supports around 2 to 4 inches of new snow before it changes over
to rain early Sun morning. Other areas farther south and west will
also see some snow to start out with but are expected to quickly
change over to rain with little accumulation due to strong warm
air advection. The problem areas are the Klondike Highway, Haines
Highway, and Hyder. All three places are expected to remain near
or below freezing for an extended period of time during the higher
periods of qpf. Decided to issue a winter storm watch for the
Haines and Klondike highways starting Sat night as upwards of 17
inches of snow is possible especially on the higher elevations of
those highways. Hyder may well see accumulations up to 8 inches
Sat into Sun before temperatures warm up enough to start mixing
with rain.

Forecast remains rather active into Sun night as the main front
seems to stall and then gradually weaken over the panhandle.
Gusty winds and showers are expected to continue through the
period. Forecast changes were minimal as guidance was in good
agreement through the period.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday night as of 10 pm
Thursday/ Extended range forecast begins with a large, negatively
tilted upper trough which will move east to be over the Panhandle
by Monday morning. Model. Low level southerly jet will start out
strong, particularly along the outer coast, but will diminish
significantly by Monday afternoon. At the surface, a very large
high end gale force low will dominate the entire gulf. This system
will track north towards western Prince William Sound while
weakening, dissipating over the interior by Monday afternoon. Even
as this low exists the forecast area, another will be tracking
northeast, to enter the southeastern gulf Monday night. Model
agreement at this point in the long range forecast is below
average, so no one deterministic model was used. Instead, current
forecast of this second low reflects an ensemble approach to both
pressure and wind. That being said, if models remain consistent,
it is likely that winds over the eastern gulf will need to be
increased to gale force. If the track of the low shifts to the
east, strong winds along the southern outer coast are possible
early Tuesday with gales in Clarence Strait. WPC used beyond this
point.

After a break in the precipitation on Friday, the first low will
have pushed a front into the Panhandle. Showers from this front
will remain over Southeast Alaska until the front associated with
the second low arrives from the south Monday night. In summary -
wet and/or snowy weather will persist through the upcoming week.
Overnight lows over the central and northern inner channels will
allow for accumulating snow with the best chance being Sunday
morning. Daytime highs will probably allow for a transition to
rain by Sunday afternoon everywhere but the far northern inner
channels - Haines, Skagway, and the highways. This may wind up
becoming an advisory event for those locations. Weak warm air
advection early in the week associated with the second front and
low will most likely result in a p-type of rain both day and
night for locations south of the Icy Strait corridor. By midweek,
the trend reverses with the rain/snow lines shifting south in the
overnight hours to Frederick Sound late in the week.

Used GFS for updates to the mid range wind forecast Sunday and
Sunday night. Net effect of this was to increase winds to 40-45
kts. Used the National Blend for updates to PoP Sunday through
Monday evening. WPC thereafter. Overall forecast confidence is
average.
