.SHORT TERM...WV satellite imagery currently shows an upper level
ridge weakening over SE Alaska and a shortwave digging into the
west-central gulf near the Aleutian Islands. This shortwave
feature, coupled with some high level moisture along the ridge,
has contributed to a high deck of cirrus clouds extending across
the panhandle. We have started to see this deck dissipate north
to south on satellite as the ridge axis pivots southeast in
response to the strengthening shortwave. Pleasant conditions have
reigned today as the ridge axis remains offshore, providing light
winds, dry conditions, and a normal warming trend for
temperatures across the panhandle due to the increase in the
amount of time we have for daytime heating.
Tonight, a developing surface low associated with the shortwave
over the central gulf will interact with the baroclinic
environment between the cold, dry mainland and the warmer, more
moist, maritime air, causing this feature to strengthen. This
surface low will remain on a southeast trajectory towards the
Pacific Northwest of the lower 48. The low will stay southwest of
the panhandle, which means that it will not have much in the way
of precipitation. The main concerns we have with this pattern
will be the tightening pressure gradient between the low and a
developing surface high pressure near the border of Alaska and the
Yukon. This will create a prime setup for strong northerly
outflow winds. Potential temperature analysis aloft shows much
cooler air wrapping in at the upper levels, and this will filter
down to the surface, increasing cold air advection behind the low.
The strongest CAA will occur after midnight adding to the already
tight pressure gradient and increasing outflow winds even
further. We do expect Lynn Canal to reach storm force at 50 kt
early tomorrow morning, and vessels should be aware of freezing
spray through this corridor. Gales at 35 kt are also expected
through Stephens Passage, Chatham Strait, and through the ocean
entrance of Icy Strait during the day Saturday. We may even see
winds increase through Clarence Strait in response to low level
jet forcing as the surface low passes near the southern panhandle
Saturday afternoon.
We did not see a strong signal from mountain wave guidance for
downtown Juneau, so we're anticipating mainly just strong outflow
winds for downtown and Douglas. We've also issued a Strong Wind
headline for there in addition to Skagway overnight tonight.
Expect winds to begin to diminish and conditions to remain dry
and clear into Sunday as a ridge builds over the gulf. In
addition, temperatures will continue on a cooling trend as CAA
continues behind the exiting low.
Generally, we thought the current forecast was in pretty good
shape and was in line with current observations, so we opted not
to make very many changes. For the most part, only local effects
were hand analyzed for a few locations. The NAMnest and GFS were
used for wind updates in later periods.
.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Thursday as of 9 PM Thursday/Sunday
will begin in a northerly outflow regime with surface high
pressure present over interior Alaska and the Yukon. A surface low
will be present south of the Panhandle as well with an inverted
surface trough of low pressure located over the Panhandle itself.
This will keep strong northerly gales over the inner channels,
specifically Lynn Canal and Stephens Passage. The surface pressure
gradient looks to weaken through the day though, so expect the
strongest winds during the early morning hours of Sunday.
On Monday, a short wave trough aloft looks to break into the
large ridge present over the gulf of Alaska. Models are currently
struggling with the position of this short wave. The result is
widely varying surface low pressure reflections of this feature.
Models do agree that it will be a relatively weak system and
likely stay offshore. Significant precipitation associated with
this system, if any, is not currently expected over the Panhandle.
Beyond this system, models carry a persistent ridge over the gulf
but diverge in their depictions of short waves traversing
around/over/through it until Thursday where a trough does look to
break into the ridge.
Not many significant changes to the extended forecast due to large
spread between models and very poor run to run consistency of the
models as a whole. The 18Z GFS was favored to handle the position
of the surface low on Monday as it was the first model to begin
depicting this solution. Forecast confidence is lower than
average beyond Sunday.
