.SHORT TERM.../Through Wednesday night/ Another day, another
storm. Short range forecast mainly dominated by the latest in a
series of strong storms to affect the panhandle. This one is
currently strengthening around 50N 135W and is expected to ride
N just off the outer coast before getting pushed inland just NW of
Cape Spencer Tue evening. Current guidance has a relatively good
handle on the system so little change was needed for the current
forecast aside from a few local effect tweaks. Main concern with
this storm are the winds and how strong they will be once the
second wrap of the storm makes landfall on Tue. Current
projections have the low level jet topping out around 60 kt which
is not quite enough to get frequent gusts to 60 mph or more at the
surface so still calling for gusts to 50 mph for the outer coast
from Sitka southward tonight into Tue and gales for the southern
inner channels and SE gulf.
More precip expected for the area as well from this system but
temps will be too warm for anything but rain except on the Haines
and Klondike Highways. However, the higher precip rate are not
expected to make it that far north so no significant snow
accumulations are expected on either highway at this time.
Into Tue night and Wed a cold trough will be pushing across the
gulf that will do two things. One, it will push what is left of
the incoming storm into Canada. And two it will bring in some
noticeably colder air. Snow levels will be dropping across the
area Wed possibly bringing a mix of precip types to many areas by
Wed night. No significant precip expected though so any snow
accumulations are expected to be light at this time.
Guidance in decent agreement through the period. Mainly used Nam
and Gfs for any forecast updates.
.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday as of 10 pm Sunday/...By
Wednesday there is an area of low pressure in the northern gulf
with a trough extending down across the eastern gulf. High
pressure begins to ridge in Thursday and then slide into Canada
Friday. Another low pressure system will move up from the
southwest into the central gulf by Saturday. It weakens as it
takes a turn northward. Watching this system for a secondary low
to possibly form Monday off the coast of Haida Gwaii. This could
enhance the weather for southern area.
Made small adjustments to the current forecast, WPC and ECMWF
continue to be the dominate choices for models to use. Exact speed
and direction of the movements of each of these systems moving
across our area is still not clear but the general idea remains
good. The pattern maybe be starting to sound like a broken record,
as a strong low pressure area moves into the area, followed by
weak ridging then quickly followed up be another low.
A wet pattern to start with on Wednesday, then drys out a bit in
tandem with the temperatures dropping late in the week. Lowered
temperatures by a few degrees mainly on Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures will begin to warm a bit over the weekend, starting
in the south and working its way north.
Overall forecast confidence is average.
