.DISCUSSION...
Snow and blowing snow on the North Slope, West Coast and Bering
Strait, warmer and windy in the central and eastern Alaska Range
and above normal temperatures in the central and eastern
interior.

Aloft at 500 mb...the longwave trough over the eastern Bering Sea
and Western Alaska will deepen today as a strong shortwave moves
north of the Aleutians along the west coast of Alaska and into the
Bering Strait. Strong southerly winds aloft will continue to bring
above normal temperatures to most of northern Alaska and will
bring another round of gusty winds through the central and eastern
Alaska Range passes and foothills. A strong upper level ridge
currently centered over the Yukon will be eroded by a series of
shortwaves moving north over the state and will slowly move to the
east into the Northwest Territories Tuesday a strong shortwave
digs south and east over western Alaska Tuesday and Wednesday. A
weak ridge will build north out of the northern Pacific into the
eastern Bering Sea on Thursday and Friday as the longwave trough
establishes itself over the western Bering Sea.

On the surface...a 1036 mb high pressure system currently located
500 nm northwest of Wrangel Island combined with a 956 mb low 200
nm south of Kodiak Island will produce strong winds over the
the Western North Slope, the Southern Chukchi Sea, the Bering
Strait and the over St Lawrence Island. As the low pushes north
a secondary low forms over Norton Sound by Tuesday morning and
will increase the winds over the Bering Strait as well as enhance
snowfall over the West Coast including the lower YK Delta, the
Seward Peninsula, as well as Norton Sound and Kotzebue Sound. The
strongest winds are expected near Point Hope where wind gusts to
60 mph are expected. Wind gusts to 50 mph are expected through the
Bering Strait and on St Lawrence Island. The winds combined with
falling snow will reduce visibilities to one half mile or less at
times. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Zone 207 for
Snow and Blowing Snow as well as Warning level wind gusts to 60
mph. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for Snow and
Blowing snow for much of the western portions of the North Slope,
the Bering Strait and St Lawrence Island where visibilities are
also expected to drop to one half mile at times but winds are not
expected to reach Warning Criteria.

St Lawrence Island will see gusts to 50 mph by this afternoon
afternoon. This may produce some issues with freezing spray near
the coast. Winds across the area look to diminish on Tuesday. An
unsettled pattern with chances for snow is expected into the
middle of the week.

A strong Tanana Valley Jet continues along the northern foothills
of the Alaska Range with wind gusts to 40 mph near Delta Junction
as the strong gradient between the low near Kodiak Island and the
high pressure northwest of Wrangel Island continues. Expect the
Tanana Valley Jet to diminish this afternoon as a brief mountain
wave sets up over the Alaska Range as winds aloft turn more
southerly and become perpendicular to the Alaska Range. A Wind
Advisory as been issued for the Eastern Alaska Range for wind
gusts to 60 mph developing this afternoon and continuing into
Tuesday morning.

Precipitation is expected to be limited over much of the central
and eastern interior today and Tuesday with drying chinook flow
over the Alaska Range, however any precipitation that does manage
to reach the surface south and east of Manely Hot Springs would
likely fall as sprinkles or very light rain or freezing rain.
Continue to monitor.

The 00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis. Model
spread is small only in the short range with considerable spread
emerging in the model suite both between model families and from
run to run by Wednesday. Models spread is considerable by the end
of the week.
