Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 230 PM AKST Tue Jan 9 2018 .DISCUSSION... A relatively quiet pattern continues today across the forecast area. The biggest forecast challenges today are temperatures and winds in the Interior. Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge of high pressure is currently the situated along a line from the Chukotsk Peninsula to Fairbanks with a trough of low pressure situated over the Yukon Territory. The trough in the Yukon Territory is allowing colder air to filter into the eastern Interior. A shortwave currently moving over the top of the ridge will move south along the Canadian Border tomorrow becoming a closed 522 dam low in the process. On Thursday this low will move to the west across the state just north of the Alaska Range moving into the Bering Sea Thursday night. The flow aloft over the forecast area will turn more southerly over the weekend as a low moving into Bristol Bay pushes the upper level ridge to the east. Central and Eastern Interior: High pressure building overnight along the Canadian Border caused the winds to pick up across the Interior as the pressure gradient tightens up. This caused temperatures to rise overnight in many locations. Closer to the Canadian Border where the winds were lighter the temperatures continued to drop overnight. A station along the Fortymile River dropped to -50 degrees F overnight. Gusty winds will die down overnight in many locations as the pressure gradient relaxes. This will allow temperatures to drop back down overnight. The temperature forecast tonight is rather complex. How quickly the wind drops off will determine how much the temperature drops overnight. The Gusty winds will continue in the area around Delta Junction as the winds associated with the Tanana Valley Jet continue tonight. A wind advisory continues for zone 223 along with a wind chill advisory (wind chill values around Delta Junction tonight will be as cold as -45F). No precipitation is expected tonight and Wednesday. As the upper low moves to the west on Thursday, the southern portions of the central Interior may see some light snow; however, any accumulation will likely be under one half of an inch. A warming trend is expected for the weekend as southerly flow increases aloft. The strong southerly flow pattern will likely result in strong winds developing in the Alaska range; however, the models currently differ in the exact details of this. North Slope and Brooks Range: High Pressure just south of the Brooks Range combined with a leeside trough just to the north of the range will is bringing strong southerly gap winds to the eastern Brooks Range. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the eastern Brooks Range. The high south of the Range will weaken tonight resulting in a decreasing trend in the winds. Elsewhere, some very light snow is expected tonight along the Chukchi Sea coast. West Coast and Western Interior: Relatively quiet weather is expected through Wednesday night as the area remains under high pressure. Some gusty winds will continue this evening along the west coast; however, winds are expected to decrease overnight as the pressure gradient over the coast weakens. The Western Interior and the Yukon Delta may see some light snow on Thursday as the upper level low moves to the west; however any accumulation will be under one half of an inch.
