Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Active pattern out west will slow this week as low pressure
stalls over the West Coast and high pressure builds over the Yukon
Territory. A strong low moving to the West Coast this evening is
already spreading precipitation to the area along with some strong
winds which are producing some high surf in the coastal areas
south of the Seward Peninsula. Breakup continues to move along
slowly, but the slightly warmer overnight temperatures in the
interior have helped advance it this weekend.

Models...Showing some significant differences by 24 hours with
the position and strength of the low moving to the West Coast this
evening, but they do come back together by Monday evening, so not
sure what to think. The low in the Bering Sea initialized about 6
mb too deep from the 29/12Z solutions to the 29/18Z surface
analysis. The GFS has been doing the best over the past several
days, so will lean toward that solution. Moving into the extended
periods, there are quite large differences, so again will lean
toward the GFS as the primary guidance.

Aloft...at 500 hpa...Lower heights to the west with a 514 dam
center over the Chukchi Sea, a 513 dam center just south of St
Lawrence Island, and a 515 dam center over the Western Bering Sea
this afternoon. This is producing southwest zonal flow south of
the Brooks Range across the state. The center near St Lawrence
island will merge with the center over the Chukchi Sea tonight and
spins south over the Bering Strait Monday morning, while the
center over the Western Bering Sea will move to 200 nm south of St
Matthew Island as it fills to 521 dam. By Monday afternoon the
center of the Bering Strait will drift over the Eastern Chukchi
Sea as the low in the Bering Sea fills and merges with it, but a
digging trough will extend south over Nikolski into the North
Pacific. The trough will continue to swing around to be over the
Western Interior and will lie from Kotzebue to King Salmon by
Tuesday morning, and works over the ridge to lie around the AlCan
Border by Wednesday morning. Weak ridging over the southeastern
mainland will remain in place with the primary axis over the Yukon
Territory. Ridging will persist over the northern Arctic. At 850
hpa...Not much change overall with temperatures 0C to -10C over
most of the area through Monday. Some warmer air over the
Southeast Interior will persist into Tuesday. Over the northwest
mainland and Western Arctic the low aloft over the Chukchi Sea
will spin some cooler air over the area starting Tuesday. At 925
hpa...The low over the Chukchi Sea and the ridging to the
southeast are producing some area of strong winds. Expect some
gusty winds to 40 mph on summits over most of the forecast area.

Surface...A 977 mb low 100 nm south of St Lawrence Island will
move to Nome tonight at 982 mb, with a 984 mb low developing in
the Chukchi Sea. The low continues north to Point Lay by Tuesday
morning, then merges with the low in the Chukchi Sea near Cape
Lisburne with a 1007 mb center. Leeside troughing north of the
ranges tonight. Over the Arctic the trough will move over the
nearshore waters Monday as a 995 mb low develops near Barter
Island then moves east. Near the Alaska Range with trough will
weaken as flow turns more from the southwest Monday through
Wednesday. Expect the leeside trough to redevelop north of the
Alaska Range Wednesday night. High pressure will persist north of
75N through Tuesday, then pushes southeast over the Central and
Eastern Arctic Coast by Thursday morning. Thermal trough develops
over the Southern Yukon Territory Monday and pushes into the Upper
Tanana Valley Monday and Tuesday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Patchy stratus continue to be the
major issue, with some periods of light snow. As the leeside
trough lifts offshore there should be some clearing of the lower
stratus, but not expecting it to clear at this time. Inland areas
will remain partly cloudy. Winds generally northeast to east at 15
to 25 mph with some occasional gusts to 35 mph locally. Winds
will diminish to 10 to 20 mph Monday for most areas from the
northeast. Temperatures a little warmer today and tomorrow, then
cooling as some colder air is wrapped around the low to the west.

West Coast and Western Interior...Wind, Rain, Snow, cooler, tell
me if you have heard this before. Not a lot of change expected
until midweek when areas south of the Seward Peninsula will see
some clearing. Strong winds today over most of the area as the low
moves into the area, then north to Kotzebue Sound tonight. Winds
speeds 10 to 30 mph with gusts in some of the coastal areas as
high as 55 mph. Mainly rain south of the Norton Sound with a mix
of snow north Norton Sound to Kotzebue Sound, and mainly snow to
the north of that. Areas with the heaviest snowfall will be the
Bendeleben Mountains, higher elevations of the Nulato Hills, the
Baird Mountains, and the south slopes of the Western Brooks Range
where up to 3 inches of snow is possible.

Eastern and Central Interior...Cloudy conditions as the southwest
flow over the state brings moisture into the interior. There is
some rain/snow shadowing from Fairbanks southeast this evening,
but as the low near the west coast moves north, expect the showers
to move into the Middle Tanana Valley with the only areas in the
rain/snow shadow being the Upper Tanana Valley southeast of Dot
Lake. Precipitation amounts generally less than 0.10 inch with
snowfall amounts less than an inch. Winds in the Alaska Range
will be gusting around 60 mph at times tonight will diminish early
Monday morning. No significant change in temperatures expected,
but a couple degrees warmer over the Southeast Interior. w

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.Fire Weather...Thermal trough developing in the Yukon Territory
will push west into the Upper Tanana Valley this evening with some
showers possible near the AlCan Border. Gusty winds near the
Alaska Range will diminish early Monday morning. Relative
Humidity values generally above 30 percent through Tuesday with
drying conditions the remainder of the week.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Broad area of low pressure
over the state with the center somewhere over the west coast.
Leeside troughing north of the ranges will bring periods of gusty
gap winds. Most precipitation will remain over the West Coast, but
expect some showers developing in the Interior late in the week as
we start to see the thermal trough developing in the Upper Yukon
Flats. Models hint at warmer temperatures toward the end of next
week.

.HYDROLOGY...More gages coming online, but most rivers remain
frozen. Leads are opening on may of the rivers and some are rising
a with some peaks in the runoff. Over flow will continue to be
a problem, and candling of the ice is being reported on some of
the western rivers. Extreme caution should be used if you plan on
going out on the ice. For the gages that area available, they
should be used with caution as they may be ice affected.
