Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 459 AM AKDT Tue Apr 17 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Aloft...A strong ridge over Northern Alaska will weaken very slowly through Friday, as a strong low over the Bering Sea moves east over the Gulf of Alaska by Fri, and another strong low aloft over the Canadian high Arctic moves southwest over Interior Alaska by Fri. This upper level pattern will result in clear skies and near normal temperatures persisting over most of Northern Alaska through Thu, while the southwest Interior and West Coast from the Seward Peninsula south will see clouds and mixed rain and snow diminishing through Thu. All areas will see increasing northeast winds and dropping temperatures Fri into Sat as the low aloft brings much colder air to all of Northern AK, and could see a chance of snow in he SE Interior Fri into Sat. Surface... A 1035 mb high over the Beaufort Sea will persist through Wed and then move west. A low pressure trough over the North Slope from just south of Barter Island to Point Lay will persist through Wed. These features are causing east winds over the Arctic coast which will increase through tonight, and be strongest near Point Lay. An occluded front from the Bering Strait to Sleetmute will weaken through Wed and drift slowly south. A mix of rain, snow and freezing rain along this front will diminish tonight and Wed. A 958 mb low in the southern Bering Sea will move to near St Paul Island by 4pm Tue, then weaken very slowly in place. An occluded front stretching east from this low will move overt he southern Bering Sea and Bristol Bay by Tue night, then extend east into the Gulf of Alaksa Wed. This will cause east winds 15 kt over the Northern Bering and West Coast of Alaska to increase to 20-25kt this afternoon and to 25-30 kt tonight. This will also cause east winds in channeled areas of the Interior to increase to 15-20kt this afternoon, and to 25g35kt tonight. We will see winds headlines for most of the West Coast for tonight through Wed night and for zones 217, 219 220 221. This front will bring rain snow mix to the SW part of Alaska tonight and Wed, with just a chance in the SW Interior and West Coast. An Arctic cold front in the Canadian high Arctic will move to the Northern MacKenzie River by 4am Wed, to Arctic Village to Eagle by 4PM Wed, to Barter Island to Fort Yukon to Eagle by 4am Thu and to Deadhorse to Anaktuvuk Pass to Chicken by 4pm Thu. Expect much colder temperatures and NE winds 20kt with this front, with gusts to 35kt through passes. && .DISCUSSION... Models initialize ok aloft and show similar solutions through Fri and then start to see some differences on the weekend with the ECMF warming the Interior more over the weekend than the GFS. At this time favor the GFS with little if any warming over the weekend. At the surface, all models initialize 10 mb too weak at 06Z Tue on the surface low in the southern Bering and 5 mb too weak on the high over the Beaufort Sea. As a result, the low will remain 5-10 mb deeper, and the high 3-5 mb stronger, than models indicate through Tue night. This will cause increase east winds over what models indicate by 5 kt over the Northern Bering, and 3-5 kt over most of northern Alaska this afternoon into Wed.
