Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 228 AM AKDT Sun Apr 8 2018 .DISCUSSION... Pleasant early spring conditions continue over northern Alaska. Aloft at 500 mb trough over the coastal areas of the North Slope will continue to move north into the Chukchi Sea as it rotates around a 509 DAM low as it moves north over Wrangel Island Monday. An upper level ridge will continue to build over central and eastern Alaska and will provide mostly clear skies and light winds over much of northern Alaska Sunday and Monday. A trough rotating around an upper level low over the high Canadian Arctic will rotate south and west to be over eastern North Slope Monday evening and along the eastern Brooks Range Tuesday morning. a Fairbanks to Eagle line Tuesday morning. This weak trough will bring no more than clouds and flurries to the eastern north slope and eastern Brooks Range. A weak trough rotating around an upper level low in the Gulf of Alaska Tuesday night and Wednesday will bring increasing clouds or flurries to these areas. On the surface a 1036 mb high pressure system stretches along 75N from the dateline to Banks Island. This low will move southeast to be centered 300 nm north of Demarcation Point Monday morning. As a 986 mb low moves north into the northern Gulf of Alaska Tuesday a strong pressure gradient between this low and the high pressure over the McKenzie Delta will develop over the eastern and central interior and will bring gusty winds over the highway summits over the interior Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. A sun glazed snowpack will limit blowing snow in these areas. The 00z model suite continues to under estimate the strength of the 1036 mb high pressure located north of Alaska but otherwise position and track of features remains good. Model spread remains good through the middle of the upcoming week but increases rapidly by late in the week. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. && .AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
