Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

DISCUSSION...
An active pattern over Northern Alaska will see the passage of
several weather systems over the coming days. The main impacts
will be felt in the form of heavy snow, particularly in the
Eastern Alaska range today into Thursday as well as the Lower
Yukon and Upper Kuskokwim Valleys late Thursday into Friday. Model
guidance maintains agreement through early Saturday, with
significant discrepancies becoming notable after this time.

Arctic Coast...
Easterly flow at the sfc continues to bring areas of patchy fog
and low stratus across the coastline east of Barrow. A low
centered just off the coast of Kivalina will move north, hugging
the coastline and reaching Barrow by Thursday morning.
Northwesterly onshore flow will support light snow west of Barrow
through this point with around 2 inches of snowfall expected. A
frontal boundary extending eastward from this low will roughly
parallel the Beaufort Sea coast by Wednesday evening, briefly
increasing chances for snow through early Thursday. A westerly
shift in wind direction is expected once the low lifts northward.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weak shortwave extending southward from the Chukchi Low is
making its way eastward through the western interior, generating
light snow across the area. No significant impacts are expected
with this system as snow dissipates through the afternoon. Weak
high pressure fill in behind this system and hold in place through
late Thursday. A low currently situated well south of the
Aleutian Islands is expected to race northeastward into Bristol
Bay and onshore Friday afternoon. Very deep saturation along with
modest convergence and upslope forcing will support very heavy
snowfall early Friday Morning through Saturday morning across the
lower Yukon and Kuskokwim Valleys. Snow totals in the Yukon
Valley will generally be 2 o 6 inches west of Holy Cross.
Kuskokwim Valley totals will likely reach 7 to 12 inches for most
areas southwest of Minchumina, including Nikolai and McGrath. The
highest snow totals will be observed in the Kuskokwim Mountains
between Holy Cross and Nikolai, with localized amounts up to 17
inches likely through Saturday. Additionally, weak low pressure in
the Gulf of Anadyr will send a frontal boundary eastward across
St. Lawrence Island Late Wednesday. The shortwave will quickly
dissipate as its parent low weakens over Siberia.

Central and Eastern Interior... A shortwave
tracking east across the central interior will take advantage of
a surge of southerly moisture to facilitate widespread light snow
across the region throughout the day Wednesday, tapering off by
Thursday morning for most locations. Total snowfall will not
exceed 2 inches for most areas, with the exception of higher
terrain in the eastern Alaska Range which could see locally up to
10 inches. Despite warm daytime temperatures over the last few
days, cloud cover should moderate temperatures and keep all precip
as snow. However, the intrusion of moisture from a strong low to
the southwest on Friday will coincide with mild daytime surface
temperatures, resulting in areas of mixed precip across the Tanana
Valley and eastward. Increased southerly winds across the Alaska
Range Friday may create a weak Chinook pattern, shielding the
Tanana Valley from this surge in moisture, though the forecast
pressure gradient appears modest at best. The best chance for snow
appears for now to be along the Kantishna River into the Yukon
Flats and Eastern Brooks Range with more scattered precip to the
east.
