Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 554 AM AKST Fri Jan 12 2018 .DISCUSSION... The long wave pattern consists of a strong long wave ridge over Western Canada and a 537 dam high center over the Arctic and a 498 dam low over the Bering. The interior will transition into a Chinook pattern over the Alaska Range Saturday into Sunday. Expect warmer temperatures for the Interior and much of Northern Alaska over the weekend and into next week. Surface... High pressure stretching north of the Arctic Coast of Alaska will persist through Sat. A weather front moving into the Gulf of Alaska today will move near St Matthew Island to the Yukon Delta, and over the Northern Bering Fri night and Sat. A 951 mb low will move into Bristol Bay Saturday night. North slope...A low stratus deck persists across the north slope with visibility down at multiple sites below one mile this morning. Dense fog headlines have been issued for zones 202 203 and 204. Light easterly winds will persist then become stronger east of Barrow Friday evening into Saturday. Increased gradient will ramp up the easterly winds to 30 to 40 mph Friday evening into Saturday. Interior...Stratus deck has dissipated and temperatures will remain cold where it is clear this morning and Saturday morning then warm up as the pattern changes to southerly flow over Northern Alaska. The Tanana valley jet still strong this morning. Cancelled the wind chill advisory and issued a wind advisory for zone 223. Winds will remain strong through Sunday morning. Alaska range passes will also see strong winds on Sunday as the Chinook flow strengthens. Wind advisories are still in effect for zones 216 217 and 219 through Saturday. The pressure gradient will persist through Saturday afternoon. West coast...Weather front will bring scattered snow showers from Nome south through Saturday morning. Expect this front to cause winds to increase again today over the West Coast and Western Interior. Also expect snow from the Yukon Delta to St Lawrence Island Fri into Sat. A stronger low will move into Bristol Bay on Sunday bringing more snow and to the Yukon Delta. Winds will strengthen again for most of the west coast Sunday into Monday.
