Bering Sea Thu.

.SYNOPSIS FOR NORTHWEST COAST...
High pressure extends N from a 1045 mb high near Cold Bay to a 
1037 mb high over the Western Chukchi Sea, and a 1042 mb high in 
the Siberian Arctic. A weak trough lies across the Bering Strait.
A 988 mb low over Kamchatka will move E and a weather front will 
move to the Bering Strait tonight, then N across the Chukchi Sea. 
Strong south flow will develop tonight and persist through Fri. A 
second weather front will move N through the area Thu night and 
Fri.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
An active weather pattern will continue into the first part of the
workweek across northern Alaska.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a shortwave trough currently stretches from the
Chukchi Sea Coast into the central Interior. This shortwave will
fizzle out some this evening; however, a second, stronger will
move in right behind the first. The second shortwave will push
through the west coast this evening and will push east through the
interior late tonight into Monday. Tuesday night a high amplitude
ridge will develop over the Bering Sea with the corresponding
deep trough situated over the Yukon Territory. This ridge will
very slowly slide to the east through next weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior: The first of two shortwaves is
currently binging snowfall to the central Interior. Snowfall
should taper off some this evening; however, it will intensify
again after midnight as moisture associated with a second,
stronger shortwave pushes into the Interior. This will bring
another 2 to 6 inches of snowfall to much of the Interior late
tonight into Monday with higher amounts are expected in the
Alaska Range. For the immediate area around Fairbanks, 3 to 5
inches of snow is expected with the heaviest snowfall falling
right during rush hour Monday morning. A surface low will move
through the Interior during the day on Monday. Initially this low
will cause some gusty southerly gap winds in the Alaska Range. As
the low progresses to the east, gusty westerly winds will develop
across the Interior in the afternoon, with the highest gusts
expected over the higher terrain. The gusty winds will result in
blowing snow developing in the afternoon, particularly over the
higher terrain. The ongoing winter weather advisories in the
Interior look to be in good shape.

West Coast and Western Interior: Another shortwave will push over
the west coast this evening and into the western Interior tonight
Snowfall totals with this system across the west coast and much of
the western Interior will generally be in the 1 to 3 inch range,
although higher amounts are expected in the eastern part of zone
227. A compact low that is currently west of St. Matthew Island
will move over St. Lawrence Island Monday morning and into Norton
Sound by Monday evening. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph are
expected on the south side of the low and will affect the Yukon
Delta and the eastern coast of Norton Sounds. The strong winds
combined with falling snow will bring blizzard conditions to the
eastern coast of Norton Sound Monday evening. Thus, I issued a
Blizzard Warning for zone 212. Tuesday will be relatively quiet
across the west coast and the western Interior. The next round of
snowfall will push into the West coast Wednesday morning and into
the western Interior by Wednesday evening.

North slope and Brooks Range: A surface low just west of Point
Hope is currently bringing easterly easterly winds to areas along
the Arctic Coast of Alaska. Along the Chukchi Sea coast gusts up
to 30 mph are possible this evening with gusts up to 20 mph
expected along the Beaufort Sea coast. A front is currently
bringing snowfall to the Chukchi Sea coast. The snowfall
associated with this front will spread east across the Beaufort
Sea Coast tonight. Snowfall accumulations with this front will
generally be in the 1 to 2 inch range. Blowing snow is currently
being observed all along the Arctic Coast with the worst
reduction in visibility being seen in zone 201 (where a Winter
Weather Advisory remains in effect through this evening). The low
will move north tonight and the area of strongest winds will move
offshore resulting in improved visibilities.
