.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The high pressure that has dominated much of the state is moving
into the eastern Gulf of Alaska as a long-wave trough moves over
the eastern Bering Sea. At the base of the trough, an upper level
closed low has started to form and a front ahead of the trough is
moving inland. Behind the front, a cold pool is developing around
Bristol Bay and is triggering an increase in instability. Rain
showers were observed over much of Southwest Alaska, western
Gulf, and the Kenai Peninsula. Isolated thunderstorms, evident on
radar and detected by GLD lightning network, were observed over
Bristol Bay and along Shelikof Strait. Clouds are returning to
Southcentral Alaska which is signifying a shift from the sunny
skies and record breaking warm temperatures to more fall like
weather.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement in the short term regarding the
degradation of the ridge in the east, and the developing low over
the eastern Bering at the surface. However, models aloft begin to
diverge around day two. At that point, the EC and the NAM begin
to bring the low pressure system south into the southwestern Gulf
at a faster rate while the GFS and Canadian lag behind stalling
over the lower Kuskokwim Delta. Into day three the model agreement
has dissipated as the GFS and Canadian keep the upper- level low
much farther north over Mainland Alaska while the EC and NAM
continue to have a south and eastward progression.

expected through the late evening hours tonight.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Tuesday)...

A front and associated atmospheric disturbance continue to very
slowly drift northeastward into Southcentral. Both features are in
the process of weakening this afternoon. Thus, the occasionally
stronger showers currently crawling across the southern Kenai
Peninsula are expected to weaken with time, eventually making it
northward into the Kenai-Soldotna area later this evening. The
shower activity is expected to continue drifting northward into
Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valleys on Sunday. However, with such
weak forcing, the showers are only ever expected to be scattered
in nature. Thus, most of Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley should
see most of the next couple days being dry, but with scattered
showers in the vicinity.

Most of the upper level energy is going into helping form a
surface low off the coast of Kodiak this evening, which after
initially tracking northeast tonight, will turn towards the
southeast on Sunday. This should effectively keep most of the
moisture and heavier rain confined to the coast, the southern
Kenai Peninsula, and Kodiak on Sunday. However, the low is already
having the effect of pushing mass into Prince William Sound,
which in turn is being funneled down Turnagain Arm, causing gusty
winds in West Anchorage and along the Seward Highway. The winds
will continue for much of the day Sunday before gradually
diminishing Sunday night.

With instability persisting as the result of the nearby albeit
weak upper level troughing into Tuesday, expect mostly cloudy
conditions to be the new normal the next few days, as scattered
showers continue over the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Numerous showers are expected this evening and overnight as an
upper level trough pushes ashore the mainland. A slight chance of
thunderstorms exists from Dillingham northwest as the cold core
aloft, associated with the upper level low, moves over the area.
Otherwise, showers should taper off near the coast in the evening,
while lingering inland. Cloud cover will keep the overnight
minimum temperatures elevated somewhat. While some showers will
remain in the area on Monday, the activity will be significantly
decreased as high pressure builds in from the Bering Sea. That air
mass will bring more widespread cloud cover, mainly for the
Kuskokwim Delta, while the remainder of the mainland will see a
gradual decrease in cloudiness.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Areas of fog will linger across much of the Bering as a moist
southwest flow becomes established. Rain associated with the flow
will mainly skirt the northwest Bering Sea. Otherwise, the next
front moves in the western Aleutians/Bering on Tuesday. The front
will likely be gale-force with a chance for storm-force.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
(Wednesday through Saturday)

A fairly high degree of uncertainty best sums up the forecast for
the second half of the week, as model continuity remains
problematic at best. Previously model agreement was better.
However, todays runs have all diverged from those solutions, and
it all relates to a Bering Straight mid-level low that is fairly
robust for this time of year. The issue lies with how quickly the
Bering Sea ridge breaks down as the Bering disturbance rounds the
top of the ridge, aided by the absorption of an Arctic coast
disturbance, which invigorates the initial low that much more.
Both the ECMWF and GFS models agree in this occurring, as the low
travels From the Bering Straight on Wednesday to the Cook Inlet
region by late Friday morning (ECMWF has it just north of
Talkeetna, while the GFS dives it into the Gulf).

In either case, these lows are unseasonably strong for this time
of year, with these models dropping 500 mb heights into the 543
to 547 dkm range. They also agree on shifting the ridge southeast
into the north Pacific, repositioning to the south of 50 deg. N
latitude. With the ridge that far south, that opens the door for
a western Pacific disturbance to ridge northeast through the
central Aleutians/Bering, while strengthening as it heads for
Norton Sound (per the GFS). The Euro agrees completely in this
scenario (at least for today it does), while taking the second low
into the western Bering while being 10 mb deeper. The first
solution would bring widespread rainfall to all of the mainland
and Bering Sea/Aleutians, where as the Euro would keep rainfall
confined to southwest Alaska and points westward.

Meanwhile, the Canadian global model agrees to the above scenarios
in general, but, its 80 dkm weaker with the initial lows, and
some 300 to 600 miles further north as it tracks it along the
Brooks range. It's also much sharper with the ridge axis between
the lead system and the latter one entering the Bering for the
weekend, while being 80 dkm higher in heights. Should this
solution verify, it would be several degrees warmer and drier
compared to the other two model forecasts. That said, it's overall
solution does resemble the Euro much more than the GFS. The net
result for us is...stay tuned...as once the lead system starts to
get sampled by our radiosonde (RAOB) network. Once this occurs,
model agreement should improve.
