Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The Omega blocking pattern across Southcentral appears to be
weakening and drifting east some. The upper ridge has slipped
east over western Alaska and moisture with the trough to the
west is pushing across the Alaska Peninsula and heading toward
the Southwest Mainland. Except for fog along the Bristol Bay coast
and the Delta, much of the Southwest Mainland saw generally fair
skies with some mid to high cloud cover. Jet stream cirrus was
evident across much of Southcentral, but there was still plenty of
sunshine. Local areas of outflow/gap winds continue across the
North Gulf Coast and the eastern Kenai Peninsula. This is delaying
the unset of seabreezes in these areas and allowing afternoon
temperatures to rise to near record levels in spots.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Sunday)...

The theme of the forecast into the weekend is "All good things
must come to an end". The ridge responsible for the driest stretch
of weather in Anchorage in September since 1984 continues to
bring widespread sunny conditions and numerous record high
temperatures across much of Southcentral this afternoon. The
gorgeous weather continues for one last day on Friday, though
diminishing northerly winds in the upper levels will allow the
cooling process to begin temperature-wise. In addition, the
offshore flow that has been prevalent throughout the past week
and has been critical in boosting local temperatures to record
levels is expected to diminish on Friday. This will allow coastal
communities like Seward, Valdez, and Cordova to have either calm
winds or even a light onshore flow develop on Friday, which will
keep temperatures significantly cooler than have been seen through
much of the past week so far.

The ridge currently over the area will be pushed off to the east
and broken down by a low currently located south of the western
Aleutians. The low and its associated upper level trough will move
into the central Bering by Friday afternoon and become negatively
tilted over Southwest Alaska by Saturday afternoon. The negative
tilt favors lift and the development of cloud cover and precipitation
for areas out ahead of it. The rain will first move into Kodiak
Saturday morning, then progress northeastward across the rest of
Southcentral except the Copper River Basin by late in the day
Saturday. The rain will continue through the overnight hours into
Sunday morning. Local downsloping from the Turnagain wind early in
the night may delay the onset of rain in Anchorage, but the rain
will become increasingly likely Sunday morning as the cross-barrier
wind diminishes. The rain will continue off-and-on through the
day Sunday across nearly all of Southcentral as the upper level
trough forcing the rain slows to a crawl. For Kodiak, a surface
low is forecast to develop off the coast early Sunday morning,
then move eastward into the Gulf, leaving that area to dry out
during the day Sunday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tonight
through Sunday)...

Rainfall chances will gradually increase from west to east over
the next couple of days, as a series of fronts move into and
eventually cross the region. The first front is approaching the
coast this afternoon, with showers slowly spreading across the
AKPEN and coastal locations. This front looks to slow its eastward
progression, as a secondary surface trough quickly moves in on
it's heals, eventually overtaking it on Friday. Then, as a low
moves northeast through the Bering, a third front (this time a
cold front) will cross all of southwest Alaska, spreading the
rainfall further inland. Showers will continue on Sunday, as a
westerly flow maintains a moist environment, vort lobes rotating
through will give added ascent to maintain shower development.
With increased cloud cover and rainfall, afternoon temperatures
will gradually cool.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...
(Tonight through Sunday)

An unsettled pattern will persist through the weekend, as a pair of
disturbances move northeast across the region. They include a
mid-level trough across the central Bering, and a low approaching
Adak. Widespread showers will accompany both of these features, as
they slowly cross the area through Saturday. Heading into Sunday,
the Bering low will move into western Alaska, with a trough axis
extending to another system over Siberia. This will keep broad
cyclonic flow across much of the region, with showers staying in
the picture. Winds and/or waves will mainly peak at small craft
conditions. However, sustained winds could reach low end gales
near Shemya on Friday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Sunday night through Thursday)...
The organized rainfall over the southern Alaska mainland will
begin to diminish late Sunday as the upper level trough
diminishes. However, an upper level trough in the Norton Sound
area will likely keep clouds and showers over much of the area
into early next week. Uncertainty in the track of this trough is
then the primary driver of lower confidence in the precipitation
forecast starting early next week. What is much more certain is
that the proximity of this trough will not allow the prolonged
sunny and dry weather the southern mainland has experienced for
most of September to redevelop next week. Further west over the
Bering Sea, ridging will setup to the south of the Norton Sound
low which should allow a period of quiet weather to the region
for the early-middle portions of next week (other than the risk
of patchy fog and stratus development). This ridging then looks
to progress eastward to the southern mainland late next week as
a trough enters the Western Aleutians. This ridge would bring a
period of quieter weather back to Southwest and Southcentral
Alaska as the storm track shifts to the Bering Sea for later
next week.
