Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Anchorage AK 415 AM AKDT Thu Sep 6 2018 .ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS... The upper level omega block pattern that has dominated the weather pattern across Southern Alaska for the better part of a week now is beginning to shift a bit this morning. An upper level disturbance moving southeastward as the leading edge of a jet streak is now approaching southern mainland Alaska. This feature is bringing additional cloud cover with it, that has already enveloped all of Southwest Alaska with some remnant cloud cover moving over Southcentral. The brunt of the moisture associated with it is staying west over the Bering Sea. However, some scattered shower activity has been moving into the Kuskokwim Delta, but the Kuskokwim Mountains are pretty effectively acting as a barrier to the moisture, keeping most of Bristol Bay north of King Salmon mainly dry. On the other side of the omega blocking high, a large upper level low centered well south of Shemya continues to tap into tropical moisture and moving it northward into the western Aleutians. This is helping contribute to extensive cloud cover across much of the Bering as that moisture turns eastward as it rounds the northern periphery of the blocking high. This is keeping the Pribilofs stuck in some miserable weather with very low cloud ceilings, fog and rain over both islands. Elsewhere across Southern Alaska temperatures are continuing the trend of the past few nights of dropping into the 40s for most areas, with 30s in the colder spots of the Copper River Basin. && .MODEL DISCUSSION... The models remain in excellent agreement area-wide for the next several days, as the nearly stagnant weather pattern continues to be one the models are all latching on to well. As such the NAM was used once again for its higher resolution. Forecast confidence is very high. && .AVIATION... PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)... A weak upper level wave is pushing into southcentral Alaska early this morning bringing widespread clouds and some areas of showers. The upper level low associated with this wave is in the Arctic north of Demarcation Point, but a second trough will intensify as it digs southward today and will set the trough over southcentral Alaska overnight Thursday night and then becomes a cut-off low in the Gulf of Alaska Friday morning. The track of this trough being directly over Southcentral will keep clouds in the region into Friday and then they will diminish again. Tonight the flow will increases and become northerly behind this low which will bring some gusty north to northeast winds into the Matanuska Valley and into Cook Inlet tonight into Friday. By Saturday, the ridge in the Bering Sea will build over the area again and put Southcentral Alaska back into the unseasonably dry and warm pattern that persisted from last weekend until today. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Thu through Sat)... A short wave dives south across the Southwest mainland bringing a brief chance for rain through late this afternoon. Tonight through the weekend a persistent pattern re-establishes with a ridge across the Bering and a low to the east. Northerly flow will minimize marine fog however low to mid level clouds are expected to stream across from the Bering Strait. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3...Thu through Sat)... A short wave dives across the eastern Bering today spreading rain across to the Alaska Peninsula this morning through late afternoon. To the west, a weakening front across the southwestern Bering diminishes by this evening. Low pressure remains south of the Aleutians as the ridge over the Bering dominates through the weekend. Gusty winds are expected across the southern Bering as the pressure gradient is squeezed between the two synoptic systems. && .LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through Wednesday)... No significant changes in the long term outlook today as a large omega block will continue to sit tight over the region with a dominant closed high over the Bering keeping the North Pacific storm track confined to the far Western Bering Sea and Aleutians. This will continue to lead to dry northerly flow over the mainland and extend the rare stretch of pleasant early fall weather through the middle of next week. Models begin to show some early signs of a pattern change by the end of Wednesday as remains from former Pacific Typhoons become entrained into the North Pacific jet, helping to enhance the stationary upper low over the Western Bering. This may be enough to begin to push the upper ridge east, potentially allowing the flow to become more onshore over the mainland by the end of next week, though details are still murky at this point. && .AFC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
