.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A shortwave associated with a broad upper level trough over the
Bering has spread rain over much of the South Mainland, including
into the lee of the Chugach. This is occurring even as the
pressure gradient along the Chugach Mountains is tightening as a
wave moves through the Western Gulf, producing gusty winds trough
Turnagain Arm. These winds are however very shallow, as moist
southwesterly winds above it are allowing precipitation to fall to
the surface. Over the Bering Sea, a broad area of low stratus has
developed in the moisture rich environment, and with weak winds
to the surface, little mixing has occurred. Even while the system
impacting the Mainland has just moved into the area today, the
next low that will impact the same region is already visible
entering the Western Aleutians. This system is expected to quickly
track into the Bering along a strong southwesterly jet today, and
then continue moving towards the South Mainland for this weekend.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
As has been the case for the last 2 days, model agreement remains
very good in the early term. This included the initialization of
the rainfall that developed over Southcentral this morning, which
is leading to continued good confidence in the rainfall forecast
into Friday morning. Afterwards, the models continue to struggle
a bit with the speed of the Bering low starting on Saturday, but
are beginning to come to a consensus with the 18z NAM. Previous
runs of the NAM and GEM were much slower with this system, and
with a strong southwesterly jet present the slower solutions were
treated as outliers in favor of the faster EC and GFS.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions with steady rain will continue into this
evening with winds increasing out of Turnagain Arm this evening.
These winds are expected to generally remain under 20 kts, and
should dissipate by late this evening. As these winds diminish,
ceilings are expected to fall to MVFR with continued light rain
into Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A front extending from the low centered over the Bering slowly
moves north and east through tonight spreading rain across
Southcentral into Friday morning. Rain tapers off from west to
east late Friday with showers continuing through Saturday as
disturbances propagate across the southern mainland from the
Bering low.

Saturday night into Sunday, rain spreads area wide with the
Bering low re-organizing as a significant lobe of energy rounds
the base of the storm system. Rain accumulations will be on the
higher side, in comparison to rainfall on Thursday due to copious
moisture streaming in along the jet stream...which shifts into an
amplified position across the southern mainland for the weekend.
Winds increase along the frontal passage on Sunday afternoon
through evening as the pressure gradient is squeezed between low
pressure to the west and ridging to the east. The greatest
challenge for this weekend is pin-pointing where the highest
rainfall amounts will be as models have slight differences with
positioning. The greatest accumulations are currently expected
across The Susitna Valley where an upper level divergent zone
sets up ahead of the approaching low.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Sunday)...

Tonight, the scattered shower activity over the Lower Kuskokwim
Valley and Bristol Bay will continue moving off to the northeast
into the Alaska Range and Interior Alaska. Late this evening into
the overnight, as the circulation of the low that has been
stationary over the Bering for the better part of the week
approaches western Alaska, showers and light rain will move into
the Kuskokwim Delta. The scattered shower activity will continue
area-wide for much of the day Friday, but the heaviest and most
persistent activity will be across the Kuskokwim Delta and the
northern Kuskokwim Valley. A 6-12 hour break in the action is all
the area gets overnight Friday night before the start of the next
system by sunrise Saturday, as a moisture-laden low and a strong
subtropical jet stream pump additional rain into the area. The
rain will move in from south to north, starting Saturday morning
for King Salmon and Dillingham, then overspread much of the rest
of the area as the day goes on. This rainfall will be significantly
heavier and more persistent than the first couple rounds of rain.
With the center of the low tracking west of Nunivak Island Sunday
morning, all of Southwest Alaska will be in a very moist onshore
flow throughout the weekend. The result will be the rain continuing
into through Saturday night into Sunday morning, then tapering
off from southwest to northeast through the day Sunday. Behind the
low, expect breezy conditions and continued southerly winds
keeping the area cloudy and moist right into Sunday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Sunday)...

The low over the central Bering right now is beginning to
dissipate and open up into a trough as it moves eastward towards
the west coast of Alaska. It will continue weakening as it moves
into the coast tonight. The next low centered well south of Shemya
right now is on its way to the Bering and will quickly become the
dominant weather maker for the region. The associated rainfall
will begin impacting the central Aleutians tonight, then slowly
track across the Aleutians into the southern Bering by Saturday.
The low center will track near the Pribilofs Saturday evening,
then moves into the northern Bering on Sunday. A moisture-rich jet
tracking south and east of the low center will bring steady
rainfall to the eastern Aleutians late tonight and up into the
Alaska Peninsula Friday and Friday night. Some of the moisture
stays with the low and moves into Southwest Alaska Saturday
through into Sunday, while the subtropical feed of occasionally
heavy rain will persist along and south of the Alaska Peninsula
right into Sunday night. High pressure will build behind the low
over the western Aleutians Saturday and move eastward across the
central Aleutians and southern Bering on Sunday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
A similar weather pattern will continue through Sunday with an
upper level ridge over the North Pacific and Gulf of Alaska, and
frontal systems continue to ride up over the top of it and across
the southern half of Alaska. Another rather wet system will track
from Southwest Alaska to Southcentral Alaska Sunday, with showers
lingering over the area Sunday night through Monday. Ridging will
build up over Southwest Alaska on Tuesday as the next deepening
low moves into the Aleutians. The ridge will shift east over
Southcentral on Wednesday to be followed quickly by the frontal
associated with a strengthening low lifting north into the Bering.
The frontal system will reach Southwest Alaska around Wednesday
evening then continue east across the state through Thursday. An
upper level trough will follow on Friday, continuing the wet
weather.
