Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level ridge persists over the southern Mainland today
allowing for widespread subsidence (sinking air) over
Southcentral. As a result, low level stratus clouds have
developed over much of the Cook Inlet region, including both the
Knik and Turnagain Arms. Visible satellite imagery shows stratus
burning off inland this afternoon.

Just south of the AKPEN, a vertically stacked low continues to
weaken as the leading front stalls out near Kodiak Island. Surface
observations indicate light rain and fog along the eastern
Aleutians and AKPEN this afternoon as a result of the continued
onshore flow.

Further west, the leading edge of a front associated with a
Kamchatka low has moved in over the western Bering, resulting in
extensive cloud cover. An upper level jet with max values near 110
knots is currently positioned on the western side of this low,
which will eventually steer the low eastward into the central
Bering.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in excellent agreement with the upper level ridge
over Southcentral and the weakening low south of the AKPEN. Minor
disagreement arises 48 hours out with the arrival of the Kamchatka
low in the Bering. Currently, the NAM and GFS are in good
agreement with the positioning of the low while the EC has a
faster solution and positions the low slightly further east. The
NAM/GFS solution was preferred at this time. Main forecast
challenge will be stratus in and around Southcentral through the
weekend.

&&

.AVIATION...
The marine layer responsible for MVFR/IFR ceiling will weaken
during the afternoon hours bringing a return to VFR conditions.
MVFR/IFR conditions are expected to return tonight and hold into
the late morning/early afternoon Saturday before becoming VFR once
again. Light winds are expected through the TAF period.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
With the upper level ridge axis only having shifted a bit further
north and east and low level southerly flow continuing, will
likely see a return of the Cook Inlet stratus stretching north
across the Anchorage lowlands and extending into Susitna Valley by
early tomorrow morning. Otherwise, the weather pattern for
Saturday looks quiet with warm and dry conditions continuing. For
Sunday and Monday upper level troughing will swing into the
western Gulf bringing a gradual increase in cloud cover to
southcentral Alaska and increasing chances of rain to the coast.
In the Copper River Basin, where the ridge will remain more
dominant, conditions will continue to be warm and dry with breezy
southeast winds increasing a little Sunday afternoon and evening
and more so on Monday.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...
The weather over the southwest mainland is undergoing a transition
as a dominant upper level ridge is sliding east allowing a low
pressure system currently south of Cold Bay to creep north,
bringing cloudier, cooler, and wetter weather to most of the area
by tomorrow. As the low drifts east tonight, the pressure
gradient will tighten across the AKPEN and Bristol Bay areas
leading to increasing southeasterly winds through the day
tomorrow. A weak wave moves through at the same time leading to
some showers over the higher terrain, with enough instability over
the Western Alaskan Range/Middle Kuskokwim River Valley to spark
off some isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.

On Sunday, a secondary shortwave wraps around the base of the
parent low into SW Alaska bringing a better chance of rain to
most areas while ramping up the southeasterly winds through the
Kamishak Gap and down across Lake Iliamna. Another shortwave
moves ashore Sunday night as the low center moves further north
over the AKPEN bringing widespread rain to the Bristol
Bay/Kuskokwim River Valley. A low level jet sweeps north across
the Gulf of Alaska further increasing the southeasterly gap winds
through Monday.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...
A stalled out and elongated front just west of the Pribilofs will
continue to fall apart tonight, though not before bringing
increasing southerly winds and rain to the central
Bering/Aleutians. An area of high pressure moves across the
western and central Aleutians tomorrow bringing a brief period of
quiet weather before another system rolls into the western Bering.
This system will bring another round of rain to the western
Aleutians which will slide east into the central Aleutians by
Sunday. A longwave ridge will move in behind the low over the
western Aleutians Monday bringing mid-level warm air advection
which should lead to the development of low clouds and fog.

&&

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Monday through Friday)...

Monday will begin with a continued slow advance of moisture out of
the southeast into Southern Alaska from about Seward west through
much of Southwest Alaska. Surface ridging setting up ahead of the
area of low pressure will allow for the Turnagain Arm and higher
elevation's winds to kick up Monday morning, and as of now looks
to continue to varying strength through Wednesday. The cross-
barrier winds over the Chugach and Kenai Mountains will help to
keep Anchorage, Matanuska Valley, and the western Kenai largely
dry for the first half of the day. During the afternoon, the rain
will gradually advance northward such that off-and-on rain will be
possible into Anchorage.

On Tuesday, continued downslope winds will at least locally
diminish some of the rain expected to be ongoing from Bristol Bay
eastward through much of Southcentral. The main forcing for the
precipitation will be from a vertically-stacked low which will be
centered south of Kodiak by Tuesday afternoon. With the strongest
forcing closer to the low, it appears there will be much less
coverage of precipitation through the Susitna Valley and
especially the Copper River Basin. In fact, portions of the area
east of Glennallen may continue to see sunshine and warm
temperatures through Tuesday. Conversely, the rain will be steady
and even heavy at times along the Gulf Coast with continuing
onshore flow.

Wednesday will be much the same as Tuesday, with mostly cloudy
conditions and cool temperatures continuing. The precipitation
distribution will be similar, though a trough circling around the
northern periphery of the low should invigorate the precipitation
activity across much of Southwest Alaska during the day.
Meanwhile, scattered showers will be primary precipitation
distribution across Southcentral, with onshore flow into the Gulf
Coast continuing the steady rain primarily into the Prince William
Sound area. More moisture availability suggests Wednesday will be
wetter further north into the Susitna Valley as well. The upper
level low makes its furthest north approach into Southern Alaska
on Wednesday.

For Thursday and Friday, the upper level low will retreat south
and westward back towards the Bering. This will cause the
precipitation throughout Southcentral, and to a lesser extent
Southwest Alaska, to become much more isolated. In fact, the upper
level ridging currently bringing the nice weather to much of
Southern Alaska tries to gradually build back towards the west
into the Copper River Basin by Friday.
