Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The inverted easterly wave responsible for producing widely
scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Talkeetna Mountains
west across the Alaska Range and into interior SW Alaska yesterday
continues to push toward Bethel. Radar returns over the southwest
highlight a band of showers situated between Dillingham and
Aniak moving west toward the coast this morning.

Conditions are mostly clear for much of the rest of southwest
Alaska this morning; however, mid- and high-level clouds are on
the increase from Anchorage east through Prince William Sound as
the next upper-level easterly wave moves into southern Alaska.
Some marine stratus is also lingering from the Barrens south to
Kodiak with high pressure situated in the northern Gulf.

Farther west, a broad cyclonic flow is keeping low stratus and
scattered showers across the Aleutians and southern AKpen. A 552 dm
ridge at 500 mb is providing some clearing for the eastern Bering
and Bristol Bay this morning. This, however, is expected to be
short-lived as the upper-level shortwave moves offshore later
this morning.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in overall good agreement with the upper-level and
surface synoptic features and with the timing of the next
shortwave moving across Southcentral Alaska today.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions will persist through Wednesday morning.
Light winds will continue through this morning. Gusty southeast
winds will increase this afternoon and continue through the
evening before diminishing Tuesday night.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The next few days will be very similar as we are in a persistent
due-east upper level flow pattern. This is due to upper level high
pressure to the north and low pressure to the south. Embedded in
this flow will be numerous short waves (also known locally as
easterly waves) and the track and timing of these waves will be
the main focus of the forecast the next few days. Models often
struggle with these features more than a day out. In between the
disturbances there will be some clearing and periods of sunshine.
With the atmosphere in the Susitna Valley and Copper River Basin
remaining unstable the next couple of days, the sunny periods will
allow some additional heating which will increase the chance of
thunderstorms in the afternoon and evenings.

This morning there is an easterly wave that is moving to the
west- southwest along the north Gulf coast. This feature has
changed the flow enough to keep the threat of stratus moving into
Cook Inlet quite low. While there is some cloud cover around 3000
ft near Kachemak Bay, the lower stratus (under 1000 ft) will not
occur in Cook Inlet today and chances of it developing over the
next few days are not very good either.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

After a fairly decent coverage of thunderstorms yesterday, look
for more of the same to continue over the next few days, as
multiple disturbances aloft cross the region from east to
west...mainly north of a Cape Newenham to Port Alsworth line. In
fact, thunderstorms have recently developed just south and west
of Bethel as one of these vort maxes interacted with a surface
thermal boundary (likely the marine boundary that stalled inland)
with a short-lived spike in reflectivity on the Bethel Doppler
reflectivity and a sudden increase in lightning that was observed
by various sensing networks. However, temporal and coverage
limitations precluded updating the recently issued forecast
package for this morning.

That said, convective coverage looks to increase each day through
the next 48 hours, mainly from mid afternoon through late evening.
Early morning water vapor analysis shows our next disturbance
currently moving into the Copper River Basin and northern Gulf.
Models show the leading edge of ascent with this wave entering
southwest Alaska during the latter half of the peak heating cycle.
With abundant moisture in place and a stronger wave aloft, it's
no surprise the models have increased instability parameters some.
Soundings across the northern half of the region show SBCAPEs of
500 and 1200 J/kg with mid-level lapse rates around 7.5 deg. C/km
and ~15 to 25 knots of bulk shear. This will allow for storms to
not remain tied to the higher terrain with a general 20 mph
movement to the west southwest expected. Additionally, with cloud
tops possibly exceeded 30,000 feet while freezing levels are
running in the 6500 to 7500 feet range, some of the heavier
showers or thunderstorms may produce small hail and this was added
to the grids for today. An even stronger wave is expected for
Wednesday which will allow for renewed afternoon/evening
convective development.

Farther south for the Bristol Bay region and points south and
eastward, instability and forcing will be weaker as this area is
further removed from the surface thermal trough and disturbances
traversing aloft. Thus, mainly showers is expected there. Another
stronger wave looks to bring another increase in shower and
thunderstorm coverage for Wednesday, before things potentially
quiet down some on Thursday, depending on which model you believe.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days through 3)...

As one wave departs the central Aleutian chain to the southeast,
short-wave ridging aloft will build south from the Arctic sea
through the central Bering and Aleutians over the next few days.
The next area of concern will be an intensifying low that
approaches the western portions of the chain by Thursday
afternoon, with rainfall chances increasing as an associated
surface front starts to impact the region.

&&

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7)...

The long term forecast beginning Thursday night starts with a
broad area of low pressure in the Gulf while an area of high
pressure sits over the Bering Sea. Weak ridging/no-flow sits over
most of mainland Alaska leading to a generally quiet pattern with
the exception of diurnally driven convection over the higher
terrain and more inland areas with the presence of a thermal
trough. Weak shortwaves rotating east around the top of the Gulf
low may cause a bit more widespread precipitation across
southcentral and SW Alaska, especially along the Gulf Coast and
Prince William Sound, Thursday night into Friday morning.

Heading into the weekend, the Gulf low shifts southeast allowing
ridging over the Bering to move east over the mainland bringing
