.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The main weather feature across the region is an upper level low
situated over the northern half of the Bering Sea. This feature is
supporting a weakening surface low over the Kuskokwim Delta
region while slowly moving northeast. Snow showers associated
with this system are tapering off over the southwest mainland
though cloud cover remains over most of the area. Over
southcentral, a upper level short wave trough swinging through the
region is providing enough lift and instability to spark off a
couple of snow showers over the Kenai and Anchorage areas
overnight while a weak low center over the Prince William
Sound/Northern Gulf is leading to some snow showers along the
coast, mostly around the Cordova area. Further west, an upper
level ridge is beginning to build in over the far western
Bering/Aleutians, leading to a rare period of tranquil weather.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in good agreement again through the mid term as high
pressure builds in over the state by the end of the week. The
only differences are in the details regarding precipitation
coverage and amount over the next 24 hours as the upper level low
lifts northeast out of the southern mainland. Most models have
struggled with depicting some of the mesoscale features and areas
of precipitation as this weak system passes through southcentral.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will be predominate over
the terminal today though periods of snow showers moving up the Cook
Inlet this morning will lead to periodic MVFR conditions. Another
weak impulse of energy coming through this evening could bring
ceilings down below 5000 ft with snow showers in the area.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A short wave moving over Cook Inlet early this morning and then
into the Susitna Valley later today is bringing a few snow
showers to the area. The upsloping over the Susitna Valley in the
southwest flow will allow a little more snow there but
accumulations will still be very low. The southwest flow aloft
will stick around through Thursday and will delay widespread
clearing until Thursday night or Friday (depending on location)
when the upper level low that is over western Alaska moves into
the Gulf of Alaska and turns flow to a more northerly direction.
There will be some weak outflow winds along the Gulf Coast when
this happens but at this time it looks like marine winds will
remain no higher than Small Craft Advisory levels.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Snow showers will taper off through this afternoon across
portions of the Kuskokwim Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley as the
upper level wave and associated surface low depart northward into
the interior. Another shortwave rotating through from the west
will then keep the potential for scattered showers over Southwest
AK through the day on Thursday. A prolonged period of drier
weather will take hold Thursday night into Friday as northerly
flow develops on the eastern periphery of a closed high building
over the Bering. This pattern will yield increasing fog concerns
by Thursday night, aided by weak low level flow and steep
temperature inversions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Scattered showers will trend downward across the eastern Bering
through Thursday morning as broad cyclonic flow is replaced by a
dominant closed high for the end of the week. This will keep the
front over the far western Bering west of the Aleutian chain and

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Guidance is showing increasing confidence of high pressure
building in over the Bering this weekend. Confidence has also
increased with the high staying over the eastern Bering through
the weekend before gradually diminishing. This setup would lead to
an outflow pattern over the southern mainland through the weekend
and into early next week. However, the models are struggling with
how to handle the outflow. There are particular struggles with
how much cold air to bring down early next week and when (Monday
or Tuesday) that cold air would come down. This will play a big
factor in how strong the winds are, and with lower confidence with
the timing of cold air and strength of winds, ensembles were
preferred next week.
