A front over the southern Gulf will move to the northern Gulf 
Mon afternoon. A 983 mb low will develop along the front near 
Sitkinak Mon morning, then move over Middleton Island Tue morning 
at 1005 mb. The low will then exit into the eastern Gulf Tue 
afternoon.

A 986 mb low 76 nm east of Kodiak will weaken to 1004 mb and move
to 59 nm southeast of Middleton Island by Tuesday morning. It 
will then continue to weaken and exit out of the Gulf near Yakutat
Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, high pressure will begin to move
into the Gulf from the west.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A weak upper level ridge, with the north-south axis essentially
splitting mainland Alaska in half, persists across the region
this morning. To the west, a vertically stacked low located just
west of the Pribilofs is keeping the weather very unsettled over
portions of Southwest Alaska and most of the Bering this morning.
To the east, a relatively benign trough extends just over the
Alaska/Canada border. Everywhere east of the ridge axis, the
weather remains quiet.

An occluded front extends southeastward from the center of the low
just west of the Pribilofs. It is spreading snow into Bristol Bay
and, as it moves inland, will cause more headaches for folks in
that area. An upper level trough extends nearly due south from the
center of the low over the central Aleutians. As this trough
swings northeastward later today, it will help reinvigorate the
precipitation falling over Southwest Alaska. More details on that
below.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models have come into better agreement with the track of the
Bering low, with general agreement that it will drift up into
Kuskokwim Bay by Tuesday morning. Meanwhile there remains more
disagreement on the development and track of the triple point low
that will form somewhere near Kodiak Island late Sunday night into
Monday morning. The models have essentially all shifted south and
east with the track of the low. Now instead of it tracking into
Prince William Sound, it looks to track between the Copper River
Delta and Yakutat by Tuesday morning. Thus, there have been some
rather large forecast changes with the morning package, as that
makes for a drier forecast for most of Southcentral from Prince
William Sound west. The stronger west to southwest winds will
persist over the southern Gulf well into the workweek.
Nevertheless, the models all have different solutions on exactly
where the low will track, with the American models now furthest
east, the Canadian the furthest west (but still tracking the low
to near Cordova, which still is an eastward shift), and the EC in
between. Thus, a combination of the 00Z NAM and GFS was favored
representing a happy medium since the 00Z GFS was west, and the
NAM was east. Confidence on the low track and associated
precipitation is low since the forecast track has shifted about
100 miles further east than just 24 hours ago.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A warm front will slowly lift northward into the southern Gulf,
with snow and rain spreading over portions of Kodiak Island. West
to southwest flow aloft will drive the warm front (and heaviest
precipitation) eastward across the southern Gulf. This may actually
result in a break in precipitation on Kodiak Island. That will
all change late this afternoon as a an upper level meridional jet
streak and short-wave approach Kodiak Island, leading to development
of a triple point low, strengthening of easterly winds out ahead
of the warm front, and low and heavier precipitation across
Kodiak Island. By this point in time, temperatures will be
climbing into the upper 30s on Kodiak Island, so precipitation
will fall as all rain near sea level.

The triple point low will track east of Kodiak Island tonight
through Monday morning, then to the vicinity of Middleton Island
Monday night. This is a more southern track than previous guidance
indicated, so the forecast has been adjusted to back off
precipitation on the Kenai Peninsula. There will still be some
light snow, primarily along the eastern Kenai Peninsula, but it
will generally be very light. The bulk of Southcentral will remain
dry with just some mid to high level clouds.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The leading edge of a frontal system lifting north through Bristol
Bay has begun spreading light snow into coastal portions of
Southwest Alaska early this morning. Light snow will continue off
and on through the day. Then it will increase this afternoon and
evening as a secondary frontal wave/trough rotates in, continuing
overnight through Monday morning. The highest QPF and heaviest
snow fall will extend over the greater Bristol Bay area from the
Nushagak River west to the Wood-Tikchik and Ahklun Mountains.
Additionally, east to southeasterly winds will increase today and
continue overnight, leading to some areas of blowing snow. Snow
showers will taper off gradually Monday afternoon through Monday
night but increase again Tuesday morning as the vertically stacked
low which had been slowly crossing the Bering moves onshore
around Cape Newenham and then up over the southern Kuskokwim
Delta.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The large low in the Bering will continue slowly east to cross
over Pribilof Islands this afternoon and move through the eastern
Bering Monday and Monday night before tracking inland Tuesday.
Cool, showery west to northwesterly flow will prevail across the
Bering behind this low and persist through midweek.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Model consistency in the long range has not improved since
yesterday. The first challenge is the location of the weak low
that will move onto the North Gulf Coast on Monday. This system
is not strong enough to bring the winds to gale force, however a
difference in the location could bring up to a 180 degree change
in wind direction along the Gulf Coast. For consistency, the Day 3
forecast was not changed significantly in this area. The second
issue of concern is the stronger system moving into the Gulf of
Alaska on Wednesday/Wednesday night. Although models are still in
agreement about a low pressure system moving into the Gulf, the
track and strength still vary greatly from model to model and run
to run. Currently EC/Canadian seem to be the closest in solution,
bringing the low northward into the center of the Gulf, while the
GFS shunts it off toward the Panhandle. Given the fact that the
GFS is the outlier, a northerly trajectory of this low seems most
likely. The main difference this will make in the sensible weather
is for the Gulf of Alaska, where winds may strengthen to gale
force Thursday and Thursday night. As for Southcentral, Southwest,
and the Bering, the building ridge continues with the promise of
good weather for the end of next week. &&
