Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The overall synoptic pattern of Southern Alaska is very similar
to what has been experienced over the past few days with a series
of upper level lows over the Aleutians/Alaska Peninsula, and an
inverted trough filling the Gulf of Alaska. The cold core low that
was previously over the Central Aleutians is shifting southeast,
rotating just south of the AK Pen. This low is being fed by the
jet stream which is migrating south of the Aleutians. A second low
pressure system, stemming from Kamchatka, is moving into place
over the Aleutians and absorbing the first low. This second low is
being followed by a robust jet skirting the Western Aleutians.
The front associated with these lows will become almost
stationary, continuing showers throughout the region. The second
feature to note is an inverted trough situated over the northern
Gulf associated with an upper level low. What has been a very wet
pattern will see a short reprieve, with slight drying as we turn
to an easterly cross barrier flow. Several short wave troughs are
progressing through the main inverted trough which is bringing
scattered showers. While the front along the northern Gulf is
decaying, a second front is following close behind.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in fairly good agreement through 36 hours
(Saturday afternoon), then some differences begin to arise. On
Saturday night a low moving into the Gulf from the south has two
clusters of solutions. The American models (GFS and NAM) are
faster and further west with the low, moving it to just east of
Kodiak Island Sunday morning as it transitions to an open wave
(front). The ECMWF and Canadian GEM are slower, and open it up
into a front about 6 hours sooner.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Generally VFR conditions with rain showers are expected
this evening, with an outside chance of brief periods of MVFR in
heavier rain showers. Easterly flow increases ahead of an
approaching weather system late this evening, which should remove
all showers from the vicinity. Southerly winds will increase
around midday Saturday as the Turnagain winds curve into town.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Cool, cloudy and rainy are going to be the themes for the weekend.
This afternoon may start with a brief break in the clouds for
downsloped areas (west of the Chugach), but the residual moisture
in the area with weak instability will be enough to generate
showers which should fill back in later by mid-evening. By late
this evening, the front moving into our area moves far enough
north to strengthen the winds aloft and begin downsloping for
Anchorage and the Kenai. However, with the next low pressure
system waiting in the wings south of Kodiak, clouds will be
abundant. Turnagain Arm and Knik River winds are expected to kick
up tonight with the initial front moving through, but these are
not expected to be overly strong. The one hope for sunny and
dry(er) weather is in the eastern Copper River Basin, where
influences from the ridging over Canada will keep high clouds only
over the area. This ridging influence will also help keep the
showers at bay.

By Saturday evening, the next front will be entering the southern
Gulf and bringing more rain to Kodiak. This front will be the one
to move northward into Southcentral on Sunday, bringing yet
another batch of rainy weather.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA...

There are some showers on the Bethel radar this morning while the
King Salmon radar has remained relatively quiet. Today there will
be a lull in precipitation activity. However, additional moisture
will work its way into the region as an upper level shortwave
pushes across the AKPEN this evening. This next wave of
precipitation will have more lift and a different dynamic setup
from yesterday, so expect more convection Saturday and Sunday.
With the longwave trough dominating the region, expect additional
shortwaves to get ejected keeping wet and unsettled weather in
place through the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS...
A very progressive pattern is on deck this forecast period. There
is a pair of surface lows near Shemya and Cold Bay. Upstream there
is a third low east of Japan. The Northern Pacific will continue
to be active bringing moisture and at times gusty winds to the
Aleutians.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The overall progressive pattern will continue through much of
next week, as one upper low sets up over the Gulf of Alaska
through mid-week and is quickly replaced by the next upper level
low/trough tracking in from the west mid-week into next weekend.
The initial system will allow several systems to rotate into the
southern mainland through mid-week, bringing precipitation and
some gusty winds to the coastal regions of southcentral Alaska
over the weekend and into next week. However, the strong
southeasterly flow associated with these systems will favor
slightly drier conditions over the downsloped areas along the
lee-side of the Chugach range.

The low and associated front will begin to impact the western
Aleutians Monday morning and steadily track eastward through
Wednesday, covering much of the Bering and Aleutians with wet and
windy conditions. The low begins to stall over the
central/eastern Bering Wednesday night, and eventually begins to
track southeast into the north Pacific. The associated front will
track through the Gulf region Thursday through Friday, bringing a
repeat scenario of wet and winds along the Gulf Coast with
downsloping conditions along the lee-side of the Chugach. The
models continue to agree that at least through much of next week,
the persistent pattern of cooler, cloudy, and unsettled weather
will remain in place.
