chaos. However, the sensible weather reflected at the surface from
this pattern is actually quite quiet. The jet at 30,000' is nearly
completely out of our area. A finger of the polar jet is well
north over the Arctic. The rest of the jet is well south of the
mainland. The lone exception is a 125 kt finger helping to support
the low that will move into the far western Aleutians. This low
will be the most potent weather maker across the entire region for
the next couple of days. Over the central and eastern Bering,
moisture associated with a decaying system will get caught up in
northwest flow as ridging pushes in. Over the Gulf of AK and
southern mainland, weak energy will continue to drift from east to
west but will struggle to bring precipitation to anywhere besides
Kodiak Island.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are now in fairly tight agreement. The pieces of energy
moving from east to west across the northern Gulf of AK had been
causing some issues the past few days. But models have seemed to
lock onto those. Thus, forecast confidence in the first 48 hrs is
increasing. There is still some uncertainty with the exact track
and depth of the low that will move over the Western Aleutians
Fri, however, the general synoptic idea is consistent.

PANC...VFR conditions will persist. The southeasterly Turnagain
Arm winds should clip the terminal once again this afternoon into
the evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The merry-go-round of lows will continue over the Northeast Pacific
and Gulf of Alaska today. With one low dissipating just south of
Kodiak Island another weak surface low and more impressive upper
low will track due west across the Gulf, bringing another round of
rain to Kodiak tonight. In between, weaker features and overall
low level instability will continue to bring showers across the
Gulf region. The north Gulf coast will be on the northern periphery
of the upper level cyclonic flow, with just some scattered showers
expected in the Prince William Sound area. A separate upper level
short-wave will move into the Copper River Basin today, introducing
scattered showers to the forecast, especially along and near the
Wrangell Mountains.

The pattern will undergo a change over the next couple days as the
low circulation shifts southward into the Pacific and steering flow
over Southcentral shifts to northerly as a high amplitude ridge
approaches from the Bering Sea. Weak upper level waves will keep
a chance of showers in the Copper River Basin. Otherwise, warm and
dry conditions will prevail across the bulk of Southcentral. Kodiak
will dry out Friday night as gusty northwest winds move in on the
leading edge of the ridge.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Thu and Fri)...
The area will see the end of some light showers this morning and
drying trend to end the work week. The last few showers on the
King Salmon radar have just about all pushed out into Bristol Bay.
The shortwave creating these showers should aid in keeping
modestly gusty east winds for inland parts of Bristol Bay,
especially this afternoon. The next system will only make it far
enough north in the Gulf of AK to continue to spread clouds over
the area, but likely no precipitation.

A weak ridge will build over the eastern Aleutians and AK
Peninsula. This will push the moisture from the eastern Bering
back across the population areas in northwest flow. This will keep
rain/snow showers likely across the area, especially on the north
side of the AK Peninsula, into Fri. This northwest flow will also
bring some cooler air with gusty winds.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2...Thu and
Fri)...
The main story across this area will be the closed low and its
associated warm occlusion that will move through in the next 48
hrs. The leading edge of this system should be cold enough to
start as snow, but should then quickly transition to rain by this
evening. Winds will top out at small craft advisory level with
just some gusts hitting gale-force. Another piece of energy will
ride up with the jet on Fri and serve to reinvigorate the front. A
new closed low will form and this one should bring at least some
gale-force winds to the west-central Aleutians. It will continue
to deepen and enlarge as it moves into the Western Bering Sat with
its associated front draped across the central Aleutians.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Models are coming into agreement with upper level ridging over the
mainland and eastern Bering blocking the southerly progression of
an upper low tracking through the Bering Strait Friday, and
eventually tracking the ridge over the mainland and pushing the
upper low over the Gulf off to the southeast over the weekend.
This progression will allow a broad upper level trough to track
through the Bering through Monday, followed by another upper level
low tracking into the Bering on Tuesday. This ridging and
offshore flow pattern will likely keep much of the Mainland
protected from activity from the Bering through Tuesday, but
possibility not much longer into the week as the Bering trough
continues to deepen and progress eastward. If this trend
continues, active weather would begin to shift from the Bering
into the southern Mainland for the remainder of next week.

The EC and GEM have been consistent in keeping the bulk of the
energy and (more importantly) cold air well north of the area in
the Eastern Interior and the Yukon. As a result confidence is
beginning to improve that temperatures will stay generally near
normal with weak ridging in the area and little in the way of
significant precipitation chances for much of the South Mainland
through Tuesday. The one area where the EC seems to be the outlier
is with regards to a small closed upper low tracking through the
Copper River Basin and into the northern Gulf coast area
Sunday night into Monday. Chances for precipitation increase from
Tuesday onward as the Bering low and associated front push
further northeastward.

...Small ice jams on the Anchor River causing localized water
level increases...

A small ice jam on the Anchor River downstream of the Old Sterling
Highway bridge that formed on Tuesday continues to hold. This has
resulted in water levels rising 2-4 ft in the vicinity of the Old
Sterling Highway bridge and the beach road. Local officials
confirm there is no flooding at this time. However, if additional
runs of ice come down the river and reinforce the existing ice
jam, water could rise higher than current levels. Residents and
other interested parties should pay close attention to the
readings from the river gage over the next few days.

A separate ice jam exists further upriver near Blackwater Bend,
which is about a mile downstream of where the New Sterling
Highway crosses the Anchor River. This ice jam formed during the
midwinter breakup back in December, and is causing water to flow
overbank and around the ice jam in the surrounding undeveloped
land.

The National Weather Service will continue monitoring water levels
on the Anchor River and this statement will be updated if
necessary.
