.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
There is a large upper low over the Bering Sea and Aleutian
Islands. Upper level high pressure is over northwest Canada. There
is a surface low over the Kuskokwim Delta that is rapidly moving
towards the north-northeast. Breezy windy conditions are
associated with this low, mainly over the Delta. There is an
occluded front over the northern Gulf pushing into Southcentral
Alaska and weakening. There is a pretty decent plume of moisture
with this front, with most of the precipitation falling along the
coastal mountains. There is a weak and dissipating front that
stretches from the central Gulf to Kodiak Island. There is a
developing low well south of the eastern Aleutians that is moving
towards the northeast.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in good agreement through Tuesday
afternoon. There are still challenges with the location of the
rain/snow line, and how strong downsloping is to the lee of the
mountains. Forecast confidence is thus near to a little above
normal.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Wind shear
will end late this afternoon, then develop again Monday afternoon
as another front approaches the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A strong low tracking northward across the Southwest Alaska coast
will turn northeast and move into the northern Bering tonight.
The associated weather front in the northern Gulf will continue
north and inland over the northern Gulf coast and Southcentral
interior and weaken tonight. The Gulf coast, eastern Kenai
Peninsula, and the upslope portion of the Alaska/Aleutian Ranges
will continue to receive the brunt of the precipitation through
tonight. Precipitation west of the Chugach Mountains, mainly snow,
will remain limited by the strong cross-barrier flow.

The next in a series of lows/fronts will track through the Gulf
Monday morning, and into the northern Gulf coast by Monday
afternoon. This will lead to another round of warming, strong winds,
and precipitation over the areas surrounding the Gulf coast and
western portions of Cook Inlet. This next systems will bring
warmer air than the previous system, and allow for mixed
precipitation types to intrude further inland. However, like the
previous system, strong cross-barrier flow will limit
precipitation chances over the western side of the Chugach
mountains. Of special note for the marine community is the dynamic
fetch with this next system. Sea states are expected to increase
to near 35 ft over the southwestern Gulf Monday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Sun
night through Wednesday)...

A broad trough over the Bering will keep an active pattern over
the Southwest as energy pinwheels about its center ushering lows
up from the North Pacific. The front which moved through last
night continued with a northward track today. However, a weak
boundary remains stalled along the Kuskokwim. This is separating
a cold polar air mass from the Central interior from a warmer
maritime air mass south of a line from Bethel to Sparrevohn. This
boundary washes out tonight as the air mass cools in the wake of
the front. Several weak disturbances aloft follow a northward
pattern across the Southwest tonight and Monday keeping light
precipitation in the forecast. Cooling temperatures across the
Kuskokwim Valley and Bristol Bay tonight will allow rain to mix
with or change over to snow showers.

The next front moves across the Alaska Peninsula on Monday
spreading another round of precipitation across the Southwest
Monday night through Tuesday. This next system will follow a
similar pattern as the front observed this past weekend as it
pushes a warm front through much of the Kuskokwim bringing gusty
southeasterly flow along with mixed precipitation. Once this front
lifts north on Tuesday, ridging builds inland from the Bering
with a drier and cooler trend mid week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3...Sun
night through Wednesday)...

The main trough center will be near the Pribilof Islands tonight
then slowly shift south and west on Monday as a stronger wave
rounds the base of this synoptic system, which then lifts the next
front across the Alaska Peninsula. The associated surface low at
960 mb fills quickly as it moves to Bristol Bay at 975 mb by early
Tuesday morning. It continues to weaken on its northward track
inland later that day. Short wave ridging gives a break between
storm systems across the Bering Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
The next storm system moves up from the North Pacific early
Wednesday pushing a front to the western and central Aleutians
during the afternoon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The front associated with a 980 mb low crossing the Kuskokwim
Delta and moving northward along the western coast will weaken
over the northern Gulf coast and inland areas Tuesday, with a
reinforcing wave quickly tracking northward across the Gulf
Tuesday night and into the northern Gulf coast overnight Tuesday
into Wednesday morning. Depending on what part of the Northern
Gulf the wave tracks over, given there is lower confidence in
this system due to lack of model agreement, this wave will likely
reinforce precipitation over the Gulf coast. There is also some
potential to bring precipitation as far west as the Cook Inlet
region and interior parts of southcentral Alaska. Colder air aloft
will begin to filter back in from the interior on Wednesday,
bringing cooler and drier conditions back to the southcentral
region.

Ridging will begin building over mainland Alaska Thursday and
Friday in response to a deep north Pacific low crossing the
central Aleutians and tracking into the Bering. Uncertainty
remains high regarding this system but current model runs are
forecasting the minimum depth of the surface low to be around 940
mb. The associated front will reach Southwest Alaska Friday night
or Saturday then stall as it hits the large upper level ridge.
Cold westerly flow and snow showers will prevail over the Bering
in the broad upper level trough that forms once the low lifts
north. Southcentral Alaska will remain under the large ridge which
means fog and low stratus will be the main forecast challenge for
the end of the week.
