.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The active pattern continues with a low over the northern Bering
and its front draped across western Alaska and the Alaska
Peninsula. A shortwave pushing through the baroclinic zone along
the Alaska peninsula is spinning up a new low that is headed
towards Kodiak Island. To the east, ridging is over the Gulf and
Southcentral Alaska and is tracking to the east. Out west, cold
westerly winds are bringing snow showers to the Bering and
Aleutians.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The models are getting in better agreement with the low moving
toward the Kenai Peninsula today but there are still some subtle
differences that are making the snow forecast challenging.
Otherwise, models are handling the major features well through the
short term but are struggling with placement of lows in the Gulf
on Saturday.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...MVFR conditions and light winds will persist through the
morning, but will be accompanied with low level wind shear
developing early this morning as Turnagain Arm winds pick up while
surface flow remains northerly. Surface winds will also pick up
this afternoon, but will remain northerly. Ceilings should also
rise this afternoon. Wind shear conditions will last into Friday
morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The front ahead of the strengthening low is moving through
Southcentral Alaska today. While the low will end up in Cook
Inlet, the track and area it develops before that is different
than what was expected from yesterday. Yesterday it appeared the
low would develop in the Lee of the Aleutian Range near the Barren
Islands and rapidly strengthen from there. However, it is evident
on satellite that the low developed along the Alaska Peninsula is
moving quickly toward Cook Inlet. The biggest impact this will
have for Southcentral Alaska is in the Kodiak area with the wind.
As the low tracks into the area from the Southwest instead of
developing north of Kodiak, stronger southeast winds will be
around this morning and the strongest westerly winds will move
into the area later this evening.

Snowfall has already begun over most of the Cook Inlet region and
advisory level snow is still expected over the Kenai Peninsula
into early this evening. Due to the strong dynamics of this system
and the way the downsloping develops off the Kenai Mountains by
the afternoon, there will be widely varying snowfall amounts in
the western Kenai Peninsula. Highest amounts are expected to be
from Kachemak Bay to Anchor Point where there will be less
downslope. The coast up to Kenai is getting west of most of the
downsloping and will see a bit of snow. Still more uncertainty
than usual with the Kenai area as snowfall will intensify greatly
over the Inlet, but could drift just a little more to the east
which would increase the Kenai to Nikiski snow amounts. Anchorage
and the Matanuska Valley are getting snow this morning, but that
will cut off by noon as downslope off the Chugach Mountains
develops and persists possibly throughout the remainder of the
event.

The north Gulf coast will also get into snow and blowing snow
today into tonight. While temperatures above the surface will help
to keep precipitation all snow, surface temperatures should be in
the 30s. This should keep the visibility in the blowing snow from
getting low enough for Blizzard conditions as colder air would be
more conducive for a Blizzard.

Seward and areas northward in the eastern Kenai Peninsula will see
the most snowfall on the north Gulf coast. Depending on the way
the low weakens and tracks, it could keep that area under
persistent southerly flow and bring in snow that is measured in
feet over the next two to three days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

An area of low pressure continues to develop near Nelson Lagoon
this morning, with current analysis showing this low to be near
993 mb. This low will continue to undergo bombogenesis ( a rapid
deepening of at least 20 mb in a 24 hour period) through tomorrow
morning, as it forms along a triple point over Kodiak Island
before moving up the Kenai Peninsula. As this occurs, warm
advection aloft will rapidly increase, with deformation dynamics
rapidly increasing over southwest Alaska, especially east of a
King Salmon to Sleetmute line. This increase in ascent is shown
nicely in the model QPF trends, with all models now showing a
prolonged period of moderate to heavy precipitation amounts, as
they've shown roughly a 50% increase in total liquid precip
accumulation for the period while expanding it further westward.

What this means is although snowfall totals near the Alaska Range
remain similar to earlier forecasts, if model trends verify, some
folks will receive much more snow than what we thought 12 to 18
hours ago. Case and point, the snowfall total for King Salmon has
increased from near 3 inches to just shy of 10 inches. However,
it's important to note that if the low deepens further,causing a
further south and east track, even a 50 mile shift in track can
make a big difference in snowfall accumulations. The area of low
pressure will weaken heading into Friday evening as it heads
towards Lime Village, with wrap around snow showers persisting
through the period.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Cyclonic flow around a strong area of low pressure near eastern
Siberia continues to quickly advect cold air across all of the
Bering Sea and towards the Aleutian chain. This low will weaken as
most of the jet stream energy gets absorbed into a developing
Kodiak low, which will allow for a more pronounced southward push
of the cold air. This process is already well underway as the
latest infra-red satellite loop shows a rapidly expanding and
deepening cumulus field across the Bering. Look for this cumulus
field to reach the chain by late this morning or early afternoon,
with expansive snow shower development with some brief but fairly
intense squalls a good bet. The best juxtaposition of jet energy
and instability type squalls looks to be from Dutch Harbor
eastward, with snowfall totals ranging from an inch or so here to
perhaps 4 or 5 inches near Cold Bay. A long fetch length will also
allow seas to build into the 25 to 35 feet range.

This pattern will continue on Friday. However, snow shower
coverage and intensity will decrease as we head through the day
as the low begins to become vertically stacked and weaken.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
An upper level low near Kodiak Island Friday evening will drop
southward through Sunday morning as the pattern further
amplifies. Another low will form just to the west of this low and
move northward, becoming the dominant low in the central Gulf by
Sunday afternoon. Further west, a large ridge over the Bering Sea
will slowly flatten through Sunday as a front pushes eastward
across the Bering and Aleutians. As this front reaches the
southwest Alaska coast on Sunday afternoon, the pattern will again
attempt to become more zonal. Exactly how this happens into early
next week is giving the models a bit of a struggle. This includes
how the models handle the Gulf low, which looks to weaken and then
possibly join the westerly flow as it strengthens over the state.
Due to the model differences, the forecast issued by WPC begins
to tilt more strongly towards the ensemble means as the week
progresses.
