Made slight changes to PoPs, QPF, and snow amounts through early
afternoon to help match current radar trends. Also added the
mention of ice this afternoon along the I90 corridor. Presently,
snow is beginning to expand across most of the state. The heaviest
snows are still west of the Missouri River and mostly west of the
CWA. However, some of this heavier snow is beginning to creep into
our western counties. Thin bands of moderate snow also exist in
the central part of the state, one having already dropped 2.3" of
snow in Murdo. Additional snow continues to develop in northern
South Dakota.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)

Looking at the storm as a whole, not much real change in the
forecast from any guidance that would set us on a different path
from what has been described in the last 10+ days of discussion.
Initial wave of warm advection precipitation has been mainly
confined to west river but timing snow onset of the rest of the CWA,
CAMS are also fairly consistent with measurable returns developing
from 14-16Z in central to southeast South Dakota and expanding
north/northeastwards through the afternoon with far northeast South
Dakota and western Minnesota possibly holding on till the evening.
As such, have made minor adjustments to the start of headlines. This
initial wave still will be the majority precipitation for parts of
the CWA around the Mobridge area, with GEFS plumes around 4-6",
while the far east and western Minnesota may only see an inch or
two. That far east and western Minnesota area then will be the only
spot with snow falling this evening/overnight as best forcing re-
organizes across the southeast to south central CWA. By 12Z
Thursday as we see precipitation pivot slowly westerly, winds are
predominantly northerly across the CWA with 1/2km winds near
40kts, so where its snowing looks like a good bet for blizzard
conditions, which will expand to cover most of the CWA (with the
exception of north central and far western counties. Snow totals
still round out to a foot to almost a foot for most areas, and a
half for the Sisseton hills region based on blended guidance.
Important to note that some of these totals are on the high end
compared to GEFS ensembles, however GEFS assume a 10:1 and most
blended guidance is ranges from 8:1 to 16:1 across the CWA so
thats why we come out on the high end. Also important to note the
GEFS ensembles are much tighter packed between Huron to Watertown,
while there is still quite a range from Pierre to Aberdeen and
back west, probably related to how far west the members push the
intense snow band before it becomes more of a TROWAL type feature
and snow rates diminish.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday)

Snowfall will have all but ended by Friday morning as the trowal
continues to depart to the east, however strong winds may continue.
At least some blowing/drifting snow will be possible through the
afternoon, especially across the eastern CWA. Cold air will continue
advecting in until high pressure noses into the area Friday night.
Although cloud cover may linger, enough should erode by Saturday
morning to allow for ample radiational cooling across fresh snow
pack to justify dropping lows below SuperBlend. Teens below zero air
temperatures are possible, with wind chills as cold as 25 below zero
Friday night into Saturday morning. Potential for very cold air
remains during the day Saturday and into Saturday night, despite
some return flow and WAA ahead of an incoming Alberta Clipper.
Sunday looks to be mild, with near or above freezing temperatures
across the area ahead of this system, but another blast of cold air
is expected Sunday night with the cold fropa. This system lacks
moisture, but snow and gusty winds are possible Sunday night and
Monday assuming the models maintain the idea of a clipper.

Will continue to see -SN/SN across the region through the TAF
forecast period, snow could be +SN at times. Expect CIGs/VSBY to
be a mix of MVFR/IFR, but lean more towards IFR values. There may
be a few areas of -FZDZ across the region later this afternoon and
evening, but confidence in this affecting a TAF site is low at
this time, so will leave out mention for now and continue to
monitor. During the day Thursday, north winds will become strong
and bring areas of BLSN and lowered surface VSBY.
