.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 438 AM CST Sun Mar 4 2018

Much of the low cloud cover is across the western CWA, with areas
east of the Missouri still void of any stratus. PIR has been down to
1/4SM for a while now, but much of the Dense Fog Advisory area has
been largely just some BR/light fog based on obs and web cams. Hi-
res models do suggest some expansion of low clouds and fog through
the morning hours, along with some lowering of visibility in spots,
so will leave the headline in place for right now.

Through the day today, expecting expansion of low clouds as we
continue to advect low-level moisture into the area. Models still in
pretty good agreement in developing drizzle/freezing drizzle or very
light rain/freezing rain later this morning. Do not expect much in
the way of impacts from this, but a light glaze of ice is possible.
By later this afternoon, it's warm enough for plain rain or drizzle
as we warm into the 30s and 40s.

For tonight, things get more interesting as the main area of low
pressure moves out of Colorado and heads towards us. Rainfall is
expected to surge northward into the area as temperatures remain
above freezing. There is even some weak instability that moves
through southeast SD and into the southeast CWA between 06Z and 12Z
tonight. Have therefore added a thunder mention to the forecast.
Late tonight we will also see colder air working into the western
CWA, which will begin to switch precipitation to freezing rain or
snow. Some light ice accumulations are possible before the precip
changes to all snow. Winds will begin to increase as well which will
likely begin to introduce some lowered visibility over the southwest
CWA, but the main blizzard conditions will hold off until the day
Monday.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Monday morning, the winter storm should be in full swing. Models all
depict an impressive deformation zone setting up. There appears to
have been a rather subtle shift in the western edge of the
deformation zone precipitation (something to continue to monitor)
and a slight shift southeast in the surface and 500hpa low tracks on
Monday.

Much of the CWA is forecast to receive between 0.75in and 1.25in of
water equivalent precipitation. And, much of that is supposed to
fall in the form of 6 to 12 inches of snow. The biggest p-type
concern continues to be how warm the column is east of the inverted
surface trof/surface low (basically the eastern half of the CWA) on
Monday and how long it will take to cool (wetbulbzero height) things
down enough to make p-type snow instead of rain. For this reason,
Brown/Spink Counties remain in a Winter Storm Watch, and not because
of potential Blizzard conditions, but rather Winter Storm snowfall
potential (6+ inches of snow accum). Added all but Hamlin/Deuel
Counties in the eastern CWA to the Winter Storm Watch since now, the
potential snow accums there have increased to 5 to 7 (with locally
higher, terrain-enhanced, amounts). But again, the concern there is
how long will it take to change over to snow. If precipitation-type
stays rain in the east on Monday longer into the day, then the
potential snow accumulations there are eaten into by "rain
accumulation", and then perhaps an advisory for possible mix
(rain/ice/snow) ends up being more appropriate over the eastern
forecast zones. Still the most uncertainty showing up over far
northeastern SoDak/wc MN right now.

The western half of the CWA (basically west of the James River
valley/Brown and Spink Counties) should be solidly into a snow-
capable thermal profile/vertical column by early Monday morning, and
this is important given the western portion of the CWA (west of a
line from Mobridge to Miller) stands to see sustained winds by 12Z
Monday moving on up into the 25 to 45 mph sustained winds out of the
northwest, with gusts probably between 55 to 65 mph on Monday. East
of that line, wind speeds and the surface temp/dewpoint forecast
suggests winds may not be strong enough and snow may be too wet to
create a significant blowing snow issue over into northeast SoDak
and wc MN Monday afternoon into early Tuesday morning. Highest
forecaster confidence lives over the western forecast zones and for
concerns over Blizzard conditions developing by early Monday morning
along and west of the MO River and spreading east river some by late
Monday morning. Winter Storm Watch upgraded to Blizzard Warning for
those areas. And the portion of counties in north central SoDak that
don't quite reach up into nasty blizzard conditions range in the
wind forecast, but still are expected to see "significant" snow
accumulations were upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning.

Not much change showing up beyond Tuesday. Still looks like a
gradual transition to higher pressure aloft and at the surface
through Thursday. Dry conditions until northwest flow sets up
Friday/Saturday timeframe and there could be a couple of brief
periods of some light snow potential associated with northwest flow
shortwaves. Temperatures are on the down-turn Monday into Tuesday,
falling below climo normal by Tuesday and then staying down until
some low level waa starts to make a dent in the temperature forecast
Friday into Saturday.
