ON THURSDAY...

.SYNOPSIS...
A potent upper level low pressure system passing north of New Mexico
will steer the jetstream across the state Thursday through Friday
with strong to very strong winds. Significant blowing dust and wind
damage will be possible on Thursday afternoon, when wind gusts will
peak from 55 to 70 mph across much of northern and central New
Mexico. Wind speeds will gradually weaken through Thursday night,
only to restrengthen on Friday with gusts from 40 to 55 mph.
Extremely critical fire weather conditions are expected Thursday as a
very warm, dry and unstable atmosphere accompanies the very strong
winds. However, a Pacific cold front crossing late Thursday will
cause high temperatures to fall well below normal on Friday and
Saturday. A back door cold front will then cause strong winds to
persist Friday night through Saturday across the northeast and far
east central plains. A few to 6 inches of snow is expected in the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains Thursday night through Friday night. A
warming trend will commence early next week, but windy conditions
will redevelop Monday and Tuesday with more fire weather concerns.

.DISCUSSION...
As the jet stream arrives on Thursday, a 983 mb (or so) surface low
will develop in eastern CO helping to strengthen surface winds. The
surface low will shift gradually eastward onto the Great Plains
Thursday night as an attendant 500 mb low deepens to 545 dam (or
so). These features will cause breezy to windy conditions to persist
through Thursday night, with wind gusts potentially gusting around 50
mph into the late night hours along the east slopes of the west
central, southwest, central and south central mountains. Winds will
shift out of the northwest overnight, before strengthening again on
Friday. Blowing dust is again expected on Friday, but the dust and
fire weather concerns won't be as high because the cooler atmosphere
will be more stable.

A ridge of high pressure will cross from the west on Sunday with a
break from wind and fire weather concerns. However, another upper
level low pressure system will move over the northwest US Sunday
night through Tuesday steering the jet stream over Colorado and New
Mexico again. The surface low in Colorado may only drop to about 996
mb this time. Nonetheless, surface winds may gust from 40 to 50 mph
both Monday and Tuesday afternoons with widespread critical fire
weather conditions possible.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER PATTERN IN PLACE THROUGH FRIDAY...

A critical fire weather pattern is in place thanks to a very dry
atmosphere and strong winds developing ahead of an approaching
Pacific trough and cold front. Humidity recovery will be poor most
areas tonight, which will lead into the 2nd consecutive day of
critical fire weather conditions for much of the state. Strong to
potentially damaging winds will develop ahead of the Pacific cold
front Thursday, then persist behind it into Friday. Extreme fire
weather conditions are possible over portions of our area Thursday,
but a downtrend will begin Friday thanks to cold air advection
behind the front with below normal temperatures forecast for a
change. Winds and humidity will still hit critical threshold across
much of the area Friday, but fire behavior may be limited by the
cold air and clouds over the area.

A ridge will follow the departing upper low over the weekend,
leading to a downtrend in winds and limited to no critical fire
weather potential. However, winds will trend up again early next
week with the approach of another Pacific trough. Potential for
critical fire weather conditions next Mon/Tue trending up, with an
additional event possible by the end of the work week given an even
more significant Pacific trough/low being modeled by both the 00z
GFS and ECMWF.

.AVIATION...
18Z TAF CYCLE
Winds are on the uptrend throughout the atmosphere and will get gusty
this afternoon. However, Thursday is the big wind day, with the main
impact period being Thursday afternoon and evening (beyond the
current TAF period) when gusts to between 45-55kts and blowing dust
will be common. Otherwise, VFR conditions prevail and are forecast to
persist with a brief period of VFR cigs in high clouds this
afternoon/evening.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A red flag warning is in effect from 11 am to 8 pm for the North
Central, Sandia, Manzano and Gallinas Mountains, Northwest
Highlands, Northeast Highlands and Plains, East Central Plains, and
Middle Rio Grande Valley where low humidities combined with strong
winds will create critical fire weather conditions.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Westerly winds will become very strong to damaging Thursday with
gusts to between 60 and 70 mph, and persist Thursday evening.
Widespread critical fire weather conditions will develop Thursday
with potential for locally extreme conditions. While dry and windy
conditions persist Friday, it will be significantly cooler, with
highs about 10 to 20 degrees below average. Travel will be difficult
both Thursday and Friday for high profile vehicles especially on
north to south oriented highways such as Interstate 25 due to the
wind.

In addition, one to 4 inches of snow are possible Thursday night
through Friday night over the northern mountains. Light amounts of
snow may also impact Interstate 25 from the Las Vegas area to Raton
Pass Friday and Friday night. Low temperatures both Friday and
Saturday night will be about 5 to 15 degrees below average, so any
tender vegetation may need to be protected.

Above average warmth, dry and windy weather return next Monday and
Tuesday with potential for widespread critical fire weather
conditions.
