NEW MEXICO TODAY...

.A potent low pressure system passing north of New Mexico today
will force widespread strong winds over the area. Southwest to 
west winds will gust over 60 mph along and east of the higher 
terrain of central New Mexico and the high plains of eastern New 
Mexico. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected across much of the 
remainder of northern and central New Mexico. Blowing dust may 
suddenly reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions.
Winds will taper off slowly behind a cold front moving through 
the region later today.

Breezy to windy conditions will subside in most areas this evening
after sunset, however ridge tops will see an increase in winds
through the early morning hours Sunday. Moisture in the lower levels
of the atmosphere will slosh into the far southeastern plains of New
Mexico tonight with low stratus clouds and MVFR/IFR ceilings possibly
developing near and between KCVS and KHOB through early Sunday
morning. Winds aloft will continue to strengthen through the day
Sunday, mixing and expanding into lower elevations through the late
morning and afternoon. Gusts of 35 to 50 kt will be possible with the
highest gusts generally favoring the Sangre de Cristo mountains and
northeastern highlands of New Mexico. Areas of blowing dust will also
likely plague areas of the state, especially the eastern plains.

.PREV DISCUSSION...310 PM MST Sat Mar 3 2018...
.SYNOPSIS...
Critical fire weather conditions will dominate central and eastern
New Mexico into this evening and again on Sunday due to dry and
windy weather. Strong westerly wind gusts producing areas of reduced
visibilities in blowing dust will impact the portions of the central
mountain chain and eastern plains on Sunday, where occasional wind
gusts to 60 or 65 mph are possible. Colder air will move into the
state from the west Sunday, with rain and snow showers around the
northern high terrain. Winds will continue to rake portions of the
central mountain chain and east Sunday night before tapering off
Monday. Monday will be colder area wide with highs 5 to 10 degrees
below normal. Cool temperatures will linger into Tuesday before a
warming trend begins Wednesday and Thursday. Unsettled weather may
return late next week.

.DISCUSSION...
While low level moisture is expected to make another run into
southeast NM tonight, not expecting any precipitation to result,
although there may be some patchy, short lived low clouds or fog
along the TX border late tonight, but this should mix out quickly on
Sunday morning. Latest model runs indicate the incoming storm system
to be a few hours slower moving over the state on Sunday, so ended
up warming forecast high temperatures a bit, especially in the east.
Best chances for precipitation over the northwest mts may also bleed
into Sunday afternoon, with the colder air aloft not arriving quite
as fast during the day. Still, the impressive pressure falls
combined with a strengthening surface gradient, and 50-60kt winds at
mt top levels will combine to produce very strong winds across the
Sangre de Cristo mts and northeast NM Sunday afternoon through the
overnight. Due to the slower system movement, very strong winds will
become west to northwest Sunday night, and persist into early Monday
morning before slowly diminishing. Therefore some adjustments were
made to the High Wind Highlights with this package.  Most of the
rest of the forecast area will likely need Wind Advisory highlights
for Sunday afternoon/evening. Otherwise, precipitation with this
system appears meager, and qpf/snow amounts for the northwest and
north central high terrain have turned out lower with this package
than previously forecast.

Desiccatingly dry air will invade the region in the wake of the
departing system, so Monday night may be quite cold, compared to
recent nighttime lows. Temperatures Monday through Tuesday night
will be below average.  West to northwest winds aloft will allow for
a warming trend mid week, but may begin to advect variable amounts
of mid level moisture over NM. This might be enough for a few
showers over the southwest mts Thursday, which may resemble virga
rather than wetting rain.

Not much confidence in the forecast for the end of next week, as the
GFS indicates a much more windy system than the ECMWF, which is
considerably wetter. As a compromise, have some chance pops across
the northern high terrain Friday night, which may be more related to
the tap of moisture in the westerlies models have been relatively
consistent with the last couple of days, and then some mostly slight
chances over the northwest and north central Saturday/Saturday
night.

.FIRE WEATHER...

..EXTENDED PERIOD OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS CONTINUES
THOUGH SUNDAY...

Winds have increased this afternoon across portions of east central
and northeast NM and many areas have already seen several hours of
critical fire weather conditions. The Red Flag Warning will remain
in effect for areas along and east of the central mountain chain
below snowpack through 7 pm.

On Sunday, the base of an upper level trough will cross NM. Strong
to damaging winds are expected to develop area wide due to strong
mixing, 40-60kt mountain top level winds, and a 994 mb surface low
over eastern Colorado. Several (3-8) hours of single digit
humidities are expected across the plains as well as areas around
Socorro. Haines indices of 4 to 5 will also be common. Critical to
extreme fire weather conditions are expected across the Middle Rio
Grande Valley and all of eastern NM. A Red Flag Warning remains in
effect for these areas.

Despite a Pacific cold front shifting from west to east across the
state Sunday night, humidities may only be lower on Monday as very
dry air will reside behind the front. Six to 9 hours of single digit
humidity will be common from the Rio Grande Valley eastward.
However, winds are expected to be much lighter. Main area of concern
for continued critical conditions will be between Clines Corners and
Santa Rosa. Below normal high temperatures, Haines values of 4, and
the limited area of concern will preclude a Fire Weather Watch at
this time.

A ridge of high pressure will cross the state Tuesday through
Thursday. Temperatures will gradually warm, and be back above normal
by Thursday all areas. Humidities will remain below 15 percent for
most areas, though since there will be much less wind, critical fire
weather conditions are not expected. Poor to fair humidity
recoveries will be common.

Models are at odds toward the end of the week with the placement of
the next storm system, but it does look like Friday and Saturday
could be windier. The ECMWF shows more moist conditions than the GFS
though, so time will tell if additional critical fire weather

normal temperatures will create critical fire weather conditions.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 9 AM to 7 PM MST Sunday for much
of central and eastern NM where low humidity combined with strong
winds and above normal temperatures will create critical fire weather
conditions. A High Wind Watch is in effect for parts of the Sangre
de Cristo Mountains eastward across the Interstate 25 corridor Sunday
where southwest winds may gust over 60 mph.
