.SYNOPSIS...
Hot and dry with critical fire weather through the rest of this
afternoon, with the exception of far northeast New Mexico where a few
thunderstorms have formed and will quickly move off into the
Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. A storm or two will likely become
severe. Hot and dry conditions persist Saturday and Sunday although
highs do trend down a few degrees from today. Temperatures slip below
100 areawide Monday before trending back up the rest of next week.
Some Gulf moisture will try to make its way into the state mid to
late next week allowing for a slight chance at afternoon high terrain
based storms.

.DISCUSSION...
The ridge has flattened out across the Sonoran Desert into the EPAC
today, while a shortwave trough moves across the CO front range. This
pattern has set up zonal flow aloft with dry hot westerly flow
mixing down across western and central NM. A lee side sfc trough has
also developed across northeast NM bringing downslope flow over much
of the east where highs have shot up to or above the century mark.
Roswell has already reached 106F where the record high today is 108F.
The Heat Advisory for Chaves County will continue into the evening
hours.

While much of the state is hot and dry, there is a threat of severe
thunderstorms for extreme northeast NM this afternoon and early
evening. Deep Gulf moisture still remains behind the dry line which
has set up over the eastern fourth of the state, while the
aforementioned shortwave trough has shot off convection over eastern
CO. This convection is helping drive an outflow/backdoor push south
to the NM/CO border where storms have already begun to develop over
the Raton/Johnson Mesa. Sfc based CAPE 2000-3000 J/kg, sfc-6km shear
of 40kts, and plenty of forcing will allow for the potential for one
or two of these storms to become severe over Union County before
quickly moving east into the OK/TX panhandles. A Severe Thunderstorm
Watch has been issued for Union County as a result and will likely be
dropped once convection has moved out of NM.

Hot and dry conditions remain through the weekend, with temperatures
dropping slightly for eastern NM Saturday and Sunday as the backdoor
front moves through. Another trough will slide across the Rockies
Monday morning shooting down another reinforcing backdoor front
across the east keeping highs sub-100. Areawide, highs Monday look to
range from the upper 80s to 90s, with 70s in the mountains. The ridge
begins to build back over NM Tuesday and through the rest of next
week with highs trending back up, flirting with the century mark at
lower elevations again by mid-week. Some Gulf moisture will try to
make it into eastern and central NM beneath the upper ridge mid-late
next week, and this could spark some mountain based convection each
afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER...
...ELEVATED TO CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS LIKELY SUNDAY ACROSS
MUCH OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICO...

Critical fire weather conditions currently prevail across much of
northern New Mexico, with elevated fire weather conditions elsewhere
as an upper level trough ejects out of the Rockies into the plains.
A backdoor front will push down the eastern plains overnight,
bringing a cooler and moist airmass for Saturday while the remainder
of central and western New Mexico remains hot, dry and unstable.

Another upper level trough will push through Sunday, spreading
stronger westerlies across northern New Mexico where elevated to
near-critical fire weather conditions are forecast. Winds will
likely fall shy of critical threshold across most of the area, so
will hold-off on a watch for now.

Increasing pressure heights associated with an upper level high
building over the region will be the story next week. A hot, dry and
unstable airmass will rule northern and western New Mexico, while
Gulf moisture makes a run across portions of the eastern plains and
southern New Mexico. Except for the eastern plains, winds will trend
down next week thanks to high pressure overhead.

.AVIATION...
18Z TAF CYCLE
VFR conditions prevail and are forecast to persist, except for low
probability MVFR conditions early Saturday morning at KLVS and KTCC.
Otherwise, gusty westerly flow will increase today. A backdoor cold
front will slide down the eastern plains tonight and result in a wind
shift at KLVS, KTCC and then KROW.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Near record high temperatures are likely over portions of central and
southern New Mexico. A Heat Advisory is in effect for the Chaves
County Plains. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 9 pm for
the Northwest Plateau, Northern Mountains and Northeast Highlands
where low humidities combined with strong winds will create critical
fire weather conditions. A few strong to severe thunderstorms are
possible this afternoon and evening over portions of the northeast
and east central.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Critical fire weather conditions are possible over portions of
northern and eastern New Mexico Sunday. Temperatures in the upper
90s to near 104 degrees will be widespread over the east central and
southeast Sunday afternoon.

miles northwest of Ranchvale, or 16 miles northwest of Clovis, moving
east at 40 mph.

Nickel size hail and wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph will be possible with
this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Clovis, Farwell, Texico, Melrose, Saint Vrain, Cannon Air Force Base,
Ranchvale, Portair and Pleasant Hill.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent dangerous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this
storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a
safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
