Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A few strong to severe storms will be possible this afternoon and
early evening across far northeast New Mexico. Elsewhere, virga
showers will be possible which may produce gusty and erratic winds.
Thursday and Friday will feature increasing southwest winds as well
as increasing temperatures. Critical fire weather conditions are
likely each day across much of eastern New Mexico and portions of
west central New Mexico as well. Record to near-record heat will also
be possible, especially Friday. A moist back door cold front will
surge through the state Saturday, increasing the potential for
showers and thunderstorms through the weekend. Storms may linger
across the east on Monday before drier air arrives on Tuesday.

.DISCUSSION...
Strong to severe storms remain possible this afternoon and early
evening across far northeast NM. A weak front has pushed into NE NM
this morning and northerly winds have been noted southward to KLVS
and KTCC. The front will retreat this afternoon with daytime mixing,
but where the boundary ends up will be a focus for thunderstorm
development. Current thinking is that storms will fire in the
vicinity of the Raton Ridge, where moist upslope flow north of the
boundary intersects with the higher terrain. Dewpoints across far
northeast NM are in the low 60s this morning, so plenty of moisture
to work with. Surface based CAPE values this afternoon will be around
1000 J/KG with around 40kts of 0-6km bulk shear. Hail and damaging
winds would be the main threat with any storm, though a tornado can't
be ruled out. However, if the boundary retreats further northward,
then most of the thunderstorms could stay on the Colorado side of the
border. Storms will quickly shift eastward this evening into
Oklahoma/Texas where the airmass in more unstable.

Any storms that develop will push the moist boundary back to the
south across the northeast plains tonight. However, all of this
moisture will be mixed out on Thursday afternoon as dry, southwest
flow re-establishes itself over NM and a 995 mb surface low deepens
over southeast CO. Thus, dry and breezy to windy conditions will be
the rule for Thursday with increasing temperatures.

Some moist return flow may eek into southeast NM Thursday night, but
much of the moisture will mix out on Friday with strong southwest
winds once again. Winds on Friday should be stronger than on Thursday
overall. Temperatures will also soar as heights continue to rise and
the downslope component aids via compressional warming across the
plains. Friday should be the warmest day of the week with plenty of
triple digit heat across the east central and southeast plains.

A strong back door cold front will press south and west across the
plains early Saturday and through the gaps of the central mountain
chain by afternoon. Gulf moisture will increase behind the front,
increasing the potential for thunderstorms Saturday afternoon through
Sunday. With low level moisture in place and a trough crossing the
Four Corners providing large scale lift, it's looking increasing
likely that storms will occur. A few storms may linger on Monday
across eastern NM.

.FIRE WEATHER...
...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS RETURN TO NORTHERN AND CENTRAL
NEW MEXICO THURSDAY AND FRIDAY...

Dry southwest to westerly flow aloft and above average warmth will
dominate New Mexico through Friday. Lighter winds still on tap for
today with winds strengthening Thursday afternoon and moreso Friday
as an upper trough drops into the Great Basin. The west and central
will continue to see poor overnight humidity recoveries through
Friday night. Recoveries will be more variable in the east with low
level moisture pushing westward during the overnights, but mixing
out during the daytime hours.

Low humidities will be widespread today except for the far northeast
where isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible this
afternoon and evening. A temporary intrusion of mid level moisture
into the state early this morning may allow for some virga this
afternoon and early evening with gusty erratic winds.

The forecast for Thursday has changed little, with high Haines and
single digit humidities overall. About 7 to 15 consecutive hours of
single digit minimum humidities remain forecast for the central and
west Thursday. The extremely dry and unstable conditions become more
widespread Friday, while winds trend stronger than on Thursday over
eastern and parts of west central/southwest New Mexico. Highs will
also be about 10-15 degrees above average over the east both
Thursday and Friday. Therefore, decided to upgrade the fire weather
watch on Thursday to a Red Flag warning and issue a fire weather
watch for Friday for eastern New Mexico as well as the West Central
Highlands.

Low level moisture may become more plentiful east and central
Saturday into Sunday, where increasing potential for thunderstorms
exists. An east wind may boost humidities for a short time from the
Rio Grande Valley to the Contdvd, permitting at least modest
improvements in humidity recoveries Saturday and Sunday nights but
may also spark some dry showers or storms. Otherwise very dry and
unstable conditions continue from the Contdvd to the Arizona border.
Early next week, dry southwest flow is forecast to persist, then the
upper high builds strongly over New Mexico with a more
vigorous intrusion of low level moisture shown late next week.

near KRTN to KTCC at 15Z will set up potential for thunderstorms, a
few which may become strong over ne NM aft 20Z. Virga may also

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and early
evening across far northeast New Mexico. Damaging winds and hail are
the main threats, though a tornado cannot be ruled out.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Critical fire weather conditions will return on Thursday across much
of eastern New Mexico as well as portions of west central New Mexico
due to strong winds, above normal temperatures, very low humidity
values, and an unstable atmosphere. Critical fire weather conditions
are also likely on Friday across portions of eastern New Mexico.

Additionally, triple digit heat will continue for areas around
Roswell for much of the week, but will expand to much of the east
central and southeast plains Thursday and Friday.
