.A stretch of critical fire weather conditions will commence on
Wednesday as an upper level low pressure system approaches the 
central Rockies from the west. A surface lee trough will deepen 
over eastern New Mexico as winds aloft strengthen causing 
southwest surface winds to gust in the 40 to 50 mph range. 
Humidities will also plummet into the single digits as high 
temperatures soar 10 to 20 degrees above normal, strong 
atmospheric mixing develops, and the Haines Index reaches 6 most 
places. After widespread poor humidity recoveries Wednesday night,
the upper level low pressure system passing north of New Mexico
will steer the jetstream overhead with very strong surface winds 
spreading critical fire weather conditions to all forecast zones. 
Strong winds and low humidity will persist through much of 
Thursday evening, especially in the east.

humidity recoveries Wednesday night, the upper level low pressure 
system to the north of New Mexico will steer the jet stream 
overhead with very strong surface winds spreading critical fire 
weather conditions to all forecast zones. Strong winds and low 
humidity will persist through much of Thursday evening, especially
in the east.

.SYNOPSIS...
Today will be the least windy day of the week, and it will be warmer
with highs near to above average. West winds will strengthen
Wednesday with critical fire weather conditions developing, mainly
across the eastern and southern portions of the state. Many locales
may see near record warmth Wednesday afternoon. Very strong to
damaging winds are possible Thursday into Friday. Widespread
critical fire weather conditions will be possible each day, even
with temperatures plummeting well below normal on Friday. Spotty
rain and snow showers are possible Thursday night and Friday north
of Interstate 40. A more tranquil weather pattern is then expected
late this weekend but dry, windy and warmer weather return early
next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Cold front has made it into the RGV and gusty east to southeast
winds at KSAF and KABQ have already tapered down. Patchy clouds over
the eastern half of the forecast area are mainly mid level but a
deck below 5000 feet now detected at KRTN and KSRR. HRRR continues
to indicate some low level moisture persisting over the eastern
plains through about midmorning before the strengthening lee trough
quickly obliterates any moisture. It will be warmer today, for most
areas, although some high clouds may become more noticable in the
west this afternoon.

West winds strengthen Wednesday, resulting in near record warmth for
many locales over northern and central New Mexico. Ridgetop winds
increase further Wednesday night and overnight lows will be about 5
to 15 degrees warmer than average. Thursday appears to be an ugly
day with very strong to possibly damaging wind, which will be
accompanied by areas of blowing dust. Some near record warmth will
linger Thursday in the Middle/Lower Rio Grande Valley over the East
Central and Southeast Plains. Wind advisories and/or high wind
warnings will likely be necessary for Thursday if model trends
continue as they have been.

Strong winds persist Friday but will turn northwesterly as the
disturbance over Colorado clips northeast New Mexico. Areas of
blowing dust will again be kicked up by the strong winds, but
temperatures will be sharply colder Friday, by about 15 to 25
degrees as compared to Thursday. In addition, spotty rain and snow
showers will be possible north of Interstate 40, but no significant
precipitation is expected.

The wind finally tapers off by Saturday, except in the northeast
where gusty northerly winds will persist. Low temperatures both
Friday and Saturday night will be below average, and much of western
and northern New Mexico will see readings near to below freezing. A
warming trend commences to kick off the start of the new week, but
drier and windy weather will continue to be featured.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED WEDNESDAY AND CRITICAL
TO LOCALLY EXTREME FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED THURSDAY...

A large upper level ridge extending from western AZ northward across
the northern Rockies will move slowly eastward today and tonight. As
the ridge moves toward NM today, winds aloft will be light across
NM. This will translate to light surface winds across western and
central NM this afternoon. South to southwest winds east of the
central mountains this afternoon will become breezy, as an area of
surface low pressure in south central and southeast CO increases the
surface pressure gradient. South to southwest winds across this area
will range from 10 to 20 mph with occasional gusts between 25 and 30
mph. As a drier air mass moves in from the west, minimum relative
humidity this afternoon will be in the single digits in western NM,
in the 10 to 15 percent range in central NM and 15 to 25 percent in
eastern NM. The lighter winds will be the factor keeping conditions
from becoming critical.

Conditions will begin to deteriorate Tuesday night, as dry air under
the large ridge moves across NM and southwest winds keep the lower
level of the atmosphere mixed. Recoveries across northern and
central NM are expected to be only fair Tuesday night. Very warm
temperatures Wednesday, generally 10 to 20 degrees above normal,
combined with widespread single digit minimum relative humidity,
high Haines values between 5 and 6, west winds 20 to 35 mph with
gusts to near 50 mph and afternoon mixing heights from 10K to 15K
feet will produce a large area of critical fire weather conditions
from the central mountains eastward to the TX border and in the West
Central Mountains. The Fire weather Watch for these areas has been
upgraded to a Red Flag Warning running from late morning to early
evening Wednesday.

Even poorer overnight relative humidity recoveries Wednesday night
will set up critical to locally extreme fire weather conditions on
Thursday across the entire region. Only very high elevation areas
which still have some snow on the ground will be spared from high
risk. Mixing heights will again be very deep Thursday, ranging from
9K feet to nearly 15K feet. Winds will be markedly stronger Thursday
compared to Wednesday with southwest to west southwest winds at 30
to 45 mph sustained and gusts from 55 to 65 mph. Locally higher
gusts will be possible. Minimum relative humidity Thursday afternoon
and evening will be in the upper single digits to lower teens. While
not as warm a day as Wednesday, highs will be 5 to 10 degrees above
normal west of the central mountains and 10 to 17 degrees above
normal to the east. All of these factors point toward Thursday
afternoon and evening being a very critical fire weather day. Red
Flag Warnings will be issued for western and north central NM from
mid morning through mid evening Thursday and for the Middle Rio
Grande Valley and the central mountains eastward from mid morning
through late evening Thursday.

A strong Pacific cold front Friday will bring much cooler
temperatures to northern and central NM. Northwest winds will be
breezy to windy Friday and relative humidity will be critical to
near critical south of I-40 and in the eastern plains north of I-40.
Despite the wind and relative humidity criteria, much cooler
temperatures and lower Haines indices will lower the risk of
critical fire weather conditions significantly. High pressure aloft
will build across the Southwest U.S. Saturday and Sunday with
lighter winds. A large low pressure system off the West Coast will
move inland Monday and Tuesday, bringing stronger winds back to
northern and central NM.

06Z TAF CYCLE
High pressure aloft will build across NM from the west
over the next 24 hours, and VFR conditions will prevail through the
period. A backdoor cold front has reached the central mountains late
this evening, and east to southeast winds behind the front will push
through the canyons to create localized wind gusts between 20 and 30
knots overnight. East wind gusts at KABQ will peak around 25 knots
through 10Z, while southeast winds at KSAF will generally be
sustained at 15 to 20 knots with infrequent gusts to 25 knots
possible through 08Z. Winds across the rest of northern and central
NM are expected to be light and terrain driven overnight. As high
pressure aloft builds eastward across AZ Tuesday, light winds aloft
will spread across western and central NM. Afternoon peak winds
across western and most of central NM will be light and generally
less than 10 knots. From the eastern slopes of the central mountains
eastward across the plains, winds will become breezy Tuesday
afternoon, as an area of surface low pressure develops across south
central and southeast CO. South to southwest winds will increase
during the afternoon hours across this region with sustained winds
of 10 to 20 knots and gusts 25 to 30 knots.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Westerly winds are forecast to strengthen Wednesday, reach peak
strength Thursday then become northwesterly Friday but remain very
strong. Above average temperatures and low humidities Wednesday and
Thursday along with the strong to severe winds will create
widespread critical fire weather conditions both days, with potential
for locally extreme conditions Thursday. While dry and windy conditions
persist Friday, it will be much cooler, with highs about 10 to 20
degrees below average. Travel will be difficult both Thursday and
Friday for high profile vehicles especially on north to south
oriented highways such as Interstate 25 due to the wind.

In addition, low temperatures both Friday and Saturday night will be
about 5 to 15 degrees below average, so any tender vegetation may
need to be protected.
