low pressure system while passing eastward along the Colorado and
New Mexico border. The storm system will steer a strong jet stream
over the state, and form a potent lee trough across the plains.
West wind gusts across the plains will vary from 45 to over 60 
mph on Sunday with widespread humidities below 15 percent and 
above normal temperatures. Strong winds will linger through Sunday
evening, but a Pacific cold front and a back door cold front 
should lower temperatures and raise humidities enough to ease 
critical fire weather conditions by 8 pm.

to high clouds (FL150-250) increasing today and tonight. Breezy to
windy conditions will persist through the afternoon with strongest
gusts of 35 to 45 kt found east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains
into the northeastern plains of New Mexico. Winds should decrease in
speed into the late afternoon and more-so after sunset. Breezy to
windy conditions will redevelop Saturday afternoon, but overall
speeds should be less than today.

Extended Wind Advisory for lower elevations until 4 pm this
afternoon. Also, expanded it to include Curry County which is already
reaching criteria. Dropped the highest terrain zones of the Sangre de
Cristos. Winds aloft will continue to gradually weaken this
afternoon, but the surface pressure gradient is expected to remain
strong. This should allow at least intermittent strong wind gusts
until mid to late afternoon in most places.

As low pressure pulls away from NM into central KS this morning,
winds in western NM, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, the west
slopes of the Sangre de Cristos and the south central mountains will
diminish. Wind advisories for these areas will be allowed to expire
at 6 AM. High wind warnings across the south central mountains,
eastern Lincoln County and southwest Chaves County will also be
allowed to expire at 6 AM. High wind warnings for the central
highlands eastward to the east central plains and for the remainder
of the Sangre de Cristos will be converted to wind advisories through
12 PM. Wind advisories have also been added to include the northeast
highlands and northeast plains through 12PM.

.PREV DISCUSSION...324 AM MDT Fri Mar 16 2018...
.SYNOPSIS...
Windy conditions will persist today across eastern portions of the
state in the wake of the departing system, with speeds peaking during
the morning hours. Look for some warming Saturday with winds picking
back up in the afternoon in advance of another strong Pacific system,
forecast to push through Sunday. This next system will bring more
strong to potentially damaging winds back to the state, but with
improved chances for precipitation. Windy conditions will persist
across eastern portions of the state into Monday as the system pulls
away from the area. After a cool day Monday, look for a multi day
warming trend to send temperatures back above normal most areas by
Wednesday. More unsettled weather with windy conditions are likely to
return to New Mexico by the end of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Impressive winds persisting overnight as the Pacific system pulls
away to the northeast and continues to deepen over the central Great
Plains. A gust to 60mph was observed at the Raton airport at 1250AM.
Mountain wave clouds noted in the nighttime microphysics RGB
satellite imagery across the west central mountains an indication of
strong winds persisting in the low/mid levels of the atmosphere.
Added a few NE zones to a Wind Advisory and will continue it through
noon, when winds should be on the downtrend. Will consider letting
the High Wind Warning expire at 6AM and replacing it with a Wind
Advisory for some central/northern zones through noon. Likely still
some snow flying across the higher terrain of the Tusas Mountains, so
will allow the advisory there to continue and then expire at 6 AM.
Otherwise, today will be dry with near/below normal temperatures
central and west and above normal temperatures east, where a Red Flag
Warning is in effect (see Fire Weather Discussion below for
details).

Look for some warming on Saturday, with a deepening lee side trough
in response to the next Pacific trough/low on approach and forecast
to push through Sunday. This system looks to come through New Mexico
further south than yesterday's system, so the strongest winds will be
focused further south and precipitation will likely impact a larger
portion of central and western New Mexico. The trough will race east
across the state Sunday, which will limit snow amounts, but we're
forecasting accumulations over much of the western and northern high
terrain including a few lower elevation locales such as Gallup and
Dulce. Strong to potentially damaging winds will persist across the
peaks and portions of eastern New Mexico overnight into Monday
morning in the wake of the departing system, which will close-off a
low and deepen to near 540dam at 500mb over northern Oklahoma by 12Z
Monday.

Cooler conditions on Monday will be followed by a warming trend
through Thursday as an upper level ridge moves overhead, with
daytime temperatures back above normal most areas by Wednesday. Both
the 00z operational runs of the ECMWF and GFS show an upper level
trough moving through the region toward the end of next week,
bringing windy conditions with limited chances for precipitation back
to much of our area.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONTINUES ACROSS MUCH OF EASTERN NEW MEXICO
TODAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND...

As low pressure in western KS pulls away to the east today, drier
air from the west and downsloping west winds will produce minimum
relative humidity in the single digits to around 12 percent across
the eastern plains. Stronger winds this morning in the eastern
plains will weaken this afternoon, as the core of strongest winds
aloft moves to the east. Even so, with a lee surface trough forming
in NW TX and SE CO, west winds will be in the 20 to 25 mph range
this afternoon. Red Flag Warnings will remain in effect for FWZ103,
FWZ104, and FWZ108 from 10 AM today through 8 PM this evening.
Relative humidity across the eastern plains will increase slightly
Saturday, but minimum values will still be near or below 15 percent.
Winds Saturday will be around 5 mph less than Friday across the
eastern plains. A lee surface trough in eastern CO Saturday
afternoon will produce southwest winds near 20 mph during the
afternoon in FWZ103 and FWZ104, where a Fire Weather Watch has been
posted for 12 noon through 8 PM.

A progressive, but fairly potent, trough will move across the
northern half of NM Sunday with a strong Pacific cold front expected
to sweep across the state Sunday morning and early afternoon. The
combination of the strong cold front and a deep surface low in
southeastern CO will bring strong west winds to all of northern and
central NM. Many locations will see sustained west winds of 20 to 30
mph with gusts to around 40 mph east of the central mountains. Light
snow and a mix of rain and snow will move from west to east Sunday
with several inches of snow expected in the higher elevations of
north central and western NM. Near critical relative humidity in the
far eastern plains Sunday afternoon and strong winds will likely
create critical fire weather conditions.

A backdoor cold front will move southward across the eastern plains
Monday. Cooler than normal temperatures will prevail across the
entire area Monday with a few hours of near critical fire weather
possible in the west central highlands and in the far northeast
plains. Lighter winds and a warming trend will follow Tuesday
through Wednesday.

eastern New Mexico again on Saturday.

Strong to potentially damaging winds will return to much of the area
Sunday as another potent Pacific system races east across the state.
Minor impacts from snow accumulation and blowing snow are possible
across the western and northern high terrain.

Strong to potentially damaging winds will persist Sunday night into
early Monday across much of eastern New Mexico.
