.A powerful upper level disturbance will approach New Mexico late
today, bringing in a fast-moving surface cold front. Strong winds
will develop late this afternoon and will peak as the cold front 
moves in from the northwest tonight. Occasional wind gusts of 50 
to 60 mph will be common in the vicinity of the cold front, and 
some higher mountain peaks of central and southern New Mexico 
could observe a few gusts close to 70 mph. The very strong winds 
will create difficult driving conditions, and could cause damage 
to utility poles, roof tops, and any frail structures. Very strong
north winds are expected across the eastern plains as a second
surface cold front plows from north to south tonight, with strong
winds lasting through Thursday afternoon. Wind gusts along and 
behind the second cold front will gust to between 50 and 60 mph,
with a few higher gusts possible.

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will push through the state later today and
overnight, bringing strong to damaging winds, some snow and blowing
snow and much colder temperatures. The strongest winds will be
tonight into early Thursday across the mountains and the eastern
plains. After a brief cool-down, look for a warm-up to begin Friday
then continue into the weekend with temperatures back above normal
areawide by Saturday. A disturbance will approach from over the Baja
late in the weekend into Monday and will result in increased clouds
and perhaps some light precipitation. Another Pacific storm system
will approach next Tuesday, but may only impact southern New Mexico.

.DISCUSSION...

...STRONG TO DAMAGING WINDS LATER TODAY THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY...

The polar jet stream is diving southeast into the Great Basin per the
latest water vapor satellite imagery and will hit New Mexico later
today, then continue over the state through Thursday. The result will
be strong to damaging winds developing over the peaks later today,
then spreading into the lower elevations early this evening and
overnight behind a cold front. Went ahead and upgraded the watch for
central and western NM to a High Wind Warning and threw-in several
forecast zones as a Wind Advisory. Left the High Wind Watch in place
for eastern portions of the area with a later onset given the model
forecast for impressive lee cyclogenesis overnight. Forecast snow
amounts do not currently justify a Winter Weather Advisory for the
Sangres, but an advisory may be required for the Raton Ridge zone due
to travel impacts through Raton Pass with consideration given to
blowing snow. Blowing snow will also impact the I-25 corridor
between Glorieta and Raton overnight, as well as the I-40 corridor
between Clines Corners and the TX border, and US 285 between Clines
Corners and Roswell. Much colder air will settle in behind the front
Thursday, with below normal temperatures forecast.

After a brief cool-down, look for a warming trend beginning Friday as
a ridge moves overhead behind the departing upper low. By Saturday,
daytime temperatures will be back above normal areawide. A Baja low
is forecast to approach NM late in the weekend and move overhead
Monday by both the latest GFS and ECMWF. However, this will be a
relatively warm and weak feature and may only result in increased
cloud cover with very little qpf being generated by the 00Z medium
range model solutions. A more significant Pacific low will impact the
region Tuesday, but the latest medium range model solutions show
this feature moving across far southern NM near the MX/TX borders.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Surface low pressure will deepen today across eastern New Mexico,
and west winds will increase across most of the region early this
afternoon. Wind speeds early this afternoon will be 15 to 25 mph,
and then will increase late this afternoon across much of the area
west of the central mountains, the Rio Grande Valley and the central
and south central highlands. A strong Pacific cold front will move
across these areas Wednesday evening, creating even stronger
northwest winds with sustained speeds of 25 to 40 mph and gusts as
high as 55 mph. A strong backdoor cold front will press southward
across the eastern plains late Thursday evening with wind speeds 25
to 45 mph and gusts to near 60 mph. Light snow and blowing snow will
accompany the backdoor cold front in the eastern plains Wednesday
night into Thursday morning. Snow accumulations will generally be
less than one inch. Light snow will also fall in the Sangre de
Cristos and adjacent highlands Wednesday night with 1 to 3 inches in
the Sangre de Cristos and in the Raton Ridge area. Chances of
wetting precipitation will be restricted to the northern Sangre de
Cristos and the Raton Ridge area.

Drier and colder air will follow the cold frontal passages on
Thursday with good to excellent ventilation rates east of the
central mountains and poor to fair conditions to the west. Strong
high pressure aloft will build across New Mexico Friday with daytime
temperatures moderating to near normal to above normal. Ventilation
rates Friday will be poor areawide. The high pressure will a shift to
the east Saturday, allowing temperatures to warm by another 2 to 6
degrees and well above normal temperatures are expected across the
entire area.

Temperatures will remain above normal Sunday through Tuesday with a
weak low pressure system bringing slight chances of rain and high
elevation snow to western New Mexico Monday night.

06Z TAF CYCLE
VFR conditions are forecast through the next 24 hours, with the
exception of KROW where MVFR fog may continue for a few hours. There
is a chance it could go down to IFR. Winds will increase dramatically
Wednesday across most western and central areas, then across the
east Wednesday night. Strong to high winds are likely at all
terminals for several hours. Snow will develop Wednesday evening
across the north with lowering cigs and vsbys.

Strong to damaging winds will develop across the mountains later
today then spread to the lower elevations this evening and overnight
behind a cold front. Gusts to between 60 and 70 mph are possible. In
addition, areas of snow will develop across the northern mountains

is not expected, blowing snow will create hazardous travel conditions
across portions of eastern New Mexico tonight.

Strong to damaging winds will continue through Thursday morning
across much of eastern New Mexico. Blowing snow will also continue
early Thursday morning, mainly across the east central and southeast
plains near the Texas border.
