Blizzard conditions are expected across the Albuquerque Metro Area as well as the Sandia and Manzano Mountains as strong to damaging east winds develop. A strong gradient of snow accumulation is expected across the Albuquerque Metro Area, with western areas potentially receiving significantly more snow than eastern areas due to the east wind. Elsewhere, very heavy snowfall is expected, with the highest amounts expected along and east of the central mountain chain, the Jemez Mountains and Mount Taylor, where one foot of snow will be common, and higher amounts are likely along the east slopes. Very cold temperatures will accompany this system. The central and south central mountains, and their adjacent high plains, will be favored for the most additional snow accumulation today, then the east slopes of the south central mountains will be favored tonight into Saturday morning. These areas should receive several inches to over a foot of additional snow accumulation, with lighter amounts of a few to 6 inches of additional accumulation elsewhere across northern and central New Mexico. Snow coverage will increase over western and central New Mexico this evening with widespread mountain obscurations and IFR to LIFR ceilings and visibilities. A backdoor cold front will move across the eastern plains this evening and reach the central mountains a few hours before dawn. Strong east to southeast canyon winds at KABQ and KSAF behind the cold front will combine with snowfall to produce LIFR conditions and near zero visibility at times from the pre-dawn hours through late morning on Friday. Winds have the potential to gust to 45 knots in the Albuquerque area and 40 knots in the Santa Fe area Friday morning. The potential exists for a major winter storm to impact most of northern and central New Mexico tonight through Friday night, and into Saturday in the east. Several inches to near a foot of snow will be possible in many areas with the heaviest amounts reaching up to 2 feet along the central mountain chain and up to 18 inches along the adjacent high plains. A strong east wind will develop below canyons opening into the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas late Thursday night into Friday with gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range causing the snow to blow and drift, as well as very cold wind chill temperatures. A second but somewhat weaker storm system will then cross Sunday night through Tuesday with lighter, but still impactful, snow amounts favoring northern and eastern areas. As a result of yesterday's storm system and the two still coming, subfreezing temperatures will engulf most of northern and central New Mexico tonight until Wednesday of next week. && .DISCUSSION... The upper low will draw a strong east canyon wind into the central valley from Santa Fe through the Albuquerque area late Thursday night into Friday with gusts potentially topping 50 mph, which will cause the snow to blow and drift. After a nice snow band sets up in the Albuquerque metro area Thursday night, accumulations will probably decrease Friday morning due to strong downslope flow associated with the east canyon wind. As the east canyon wind weakens late Friday, snow will probably accumulate more efficiently again. After a break in the weather with well below normal temperatures on Sunday, an upper level trough will cross from the northwest Sunday night through Tuesday with the potential for more snow accumulation. A Pacific cold front will dive through western areas with the system, as a back door cold front banks up against the east slopes of the central mountain chain. This system will again have some decent dynamics with the jetstream crossing southern NM, but it shouldn't have as much moisture to work with. A few to several inches of snow will be possible, favoring northern and eastern areas. As a result of the three storm systems (including the system that is currently exiting) temperatures will be below normal until a modest ridge of high pressure crosses late next week. In fact, most of the forecast area will drop below freezing tonight and remain below freezing until Wednesday, including Albuquerque. 44 && .FIRE WEATHER... A major winter storm moving into the region tonight through Saturday will significantly mitigate any fire potential for quite some time. Snow will develop over western NM early this evening then spread east into central NM overnight. Meanwhile, a strong back door cold front will slide into eastern NM and through gaps in the central mt chain by Friday morning. High winds are likely below canyons in the Rio Grande Valley, which may limit snowfall accumulations during the day Friday. Winds are expected to relax Friday night and allow snow to spread back into any snow free areas. Widespread heavy snowfall accumulations will focus over eastern NM Friday night and Saturday. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 18" are possible between the central mt chain and the Pecos Valley with widespread amounts greater than 4" elsewhere. Bitterly cold temperatures will move into the state behind this system through early next week. Snowpack will stick around for many days, even in the lower elevations.
