Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 825 AM PDT Sun Mar 26 2017 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring dry conditions today with fairly light winds and near normal temperatures. A vigorous low pressure system will then slide over the Great Basin and Four Corners region Monday through early Tuesday leading to strong winds along with some showers and slightly cooler temperatures for our area. This will be followed by an even stronger system Thursday into next weekend. && .UPDATE...Made a few adjustments to the sky cover and POP forecast for today just to remove any mention of showers in the Sierra as best chances look to hold off until later tonight. Otherwise, fairly peaceful today expected with just a few scattered high clouds. -Outler- && .SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. Tranquil weather is in store today under the shortwave ridge between yesterday's departing low and another incoming system. Considerable high clouds ahead of it will quickly spread across the region by this afternoon then will push off to the southeast this evening. The leading edge of the trough is forecast to move across the southern Sierra and into west central Nevada by early Monday morning then the trough axis traverses Nevada and southern California Monday. Additional energy diving down through northern Nevada will produce cyclogenesis Monday night and Tuesday morning with the center of the upper low forecast to close up over the Four Corners between 12Z and 18Z Tuesday. This scenario will produce strong west winds across the western Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County Monday afternoon and evening followed by widespread strong northwest to north winds spreading over much of our forecast area Monday evening through Tuesday morning. A quick shot of scattered to numerous showers can again be expected primarily across south central Nevada and northwest Arizona Monday through Monday evening. Temperatures will only dip slightly Monday and Tuesday but the increasing winds will make conditions more uncomfortable than today. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday. Weak ridging over the area Wednesday will allow for a brief break between weather systems. Lighter winds along with a slight jump in temperatures is expected. 24 hours ago there was significant differences between the extended models, but the comparison between the GFS, ECMWF, and Canadian runs has shown much improvement in the 00z run. All models now show an upper low dropping south into northern Nevada Thursday afternoon and then tracking into northwest Arizona Thursday evening. Just ahead of this system we are expected to see winds increase significantly Thursday afternoon with most areas likely seeing wind advisory level winds during the afternoon and possibly stronger. A strong cold front is then forecast to move through the region with a tight thermal and surface pressure gradient helping to generate the winds. There looks to be enough moisture associated with this system to generate showers and isolated thunderstorms across mainly the northern and eastern areas of the CWA and especially along the front which does looks to be fairly strong. This system will exit the area Thursday night with a few showers remaining into Friday over the far eastern areas. Gusty north winds will also continue along with a fairly significant amount of cooler air advecting into the region. Drier, but cool northerly flow will remain over the area through the weekend with temperatures remaining a few degrees below normal. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds favoring an east to southeast component are expected for most of today under increasing cirrus clouds this afternoon. Typical light southwest winds can be expected this evening and overnight. Southwest winds will increase Monday ahead of a vigorous cold front that will likely produce north winds gusting over 30 knots Monday night into Tuesday. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Generally light winds and increasing high clouds can be expected across most of the region today under a weak high pressure ridge.
