.SYNOPSIS...
Windy conditions are expected today as a storm system and
associated cold front pass over the region. Most areas will see
lighter winds on Saturday, except down the Colorado River Valley
where gusty, north winds will continue through the weekend. Cooler
temperatures are expected today and tomorrow before a warming
trend begins Sunday into next week.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday.

Low pressure system will make its way across the Western US today
accompanied by a dry, sfc cold front. Local effects with this
system have already begun as a strong upper level jet rounds the
bottom of the trough bringing strong westerlies to the higher
elevations of the Sierra. A few gusts over 40 mph have made it
down into the Owens Valley with a gust of 41 mph recorded at
Bishop Airport. This morning the focus area for winds will shift
to San Bernardino and Mohave counties ahead of the approaching
cold front as aforementioned jet shifts south and eastward. Gusts
in these areas are expected to remain between 40-50 mph, with
isolated gusts up to 55 mph possible across the western Mojave
Desert. Winds will shift to the north as cold front moves through
today with some stronger post-frontal winds expected across
Esmeralda and central Nye counties. Moisture associated with this
system will remain to the north of the area with any chances for
rain/snow limited to the higher elevations of the Sierra this
morning. By late tonight front will have pushed south of the area
and cooler temps will filter in as winds slowly diminish on the
backside of the exiting trough. Temps today and tonight will be
5-10 degrees cooler than yesterday; dropping another few degrees
on Saturday. Lighter winds are expected on Saturday with the
exception being down the Colorado River Valley where gusty,
northerly winds continue. Sustained winds in this area will be
around 20-25 mph gusting near 30 mph and a Lake Wind Advisory may
be needed for a portion of the day Saturday.

This cool down will not last long as ridge builds in quickly behind
exiting trough on Sunday bringing temps back up to near seasonal
normals.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday.

Dry and warm fall weather is expected to begin the work week with
high pressure forecast over the area Monday and Tuesday sending high
temperatures back to 6-8 degrees above normal.

A few degrees of cooling is forecast by midweek with high pressure
breaking down and the upper flow flattening as an upper level trough
and associated cold front move into the Pacific NW. While this
system if forecast to move east across the northern Rockies and
Northern Plains on Thursday, models bring a shortwave south through
the Great Basin, bringing a cold front and gusty north winds through
the region. There are model differences in how strong the front will
be when it passes through the forecast area and whether additional
energy late Friday reinforces the northerly flow.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Gusty, southwest winds will increase
after sunrise this morning reaching speeds of 15-20 knots gusting
25-30 knots through early afternoon. This afternoon winds become
more westerly, decreasing slightly as a result. Winds will shift
to the northwest this evening and become gusty as a cold front
passes between 02z-06z. These winds will not be as strong as
Friday morning with gusts closer to 20 knots. Lighter north to
northeast winds are expected on Saturday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Strong, west winds across the southern Sierra and
Owens Valley will decrease after sunrise. Strong, southwest winds
will increase in a band from San Bernardino County to Mohave
County ahead of an approaching cold front. As cold front pushes
through the southern Great Basin today, winds will shift north and
become gusty. Other areas will shift to the north this evening
and tonight with lighter winds expected across much of the area
Saturday. Exception will be down the Colorado River Valley where
gusty, north winds will continue.
