Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 305 AM MST Wed Jun 14 2017 .SYNOPSIS...Strong high pressure aloft will bring very hot daytime temperatures especially this weekend and early next week. The hottest locations mainly west of Tucson will approach of exceed 115 degrees Sunday into Tuesday. && .DISCUSSION...A 591 dm high was centered over southern Chihuahua Mexico early this morning, and a ridge axis extended northeastward into the southeastern CONUS. Meanwhile, IR satellite imagery depicted clear skies across southeast Arizona, and a few thin cirriform clouds were south of the area across central/southern Sonora Mexico and westward into central Baja California. There were no major deviations via the 14/00Z GFS/ECMWF/CMC versus their respective previous solutions regarding the expectation for very hot daytime temperatures to occur by this weekend and continuing into early next week. Thus, there were only very minor temperature adjustments made to the inherited official forecast. However, a slight downward adjustment led to the cancellation of the Excessive Heat Watch previously in effect for western Pima County on Friday. At any rate, clear skies should be the rule at least through Saturday, though perhaps a few thin cirriform clouds may move northeastward across the area later today and tonight. High temperatures this afternoon are forecast to be about 5-10 degrees hotter versus Tuesday. Expect only about a degree-or-two of daily warming Thursday through Saturday. The GFS/ECMWF/CMC then suggest that more significant warming will occur Sunday into Monday as the strengthening upper high becomes centered just north or northeast of this forecast area. There were no adjustments of consequence made to the inherited high temperature forecast for Monday. Thus, the expectation for Tucson International Airport official site remains at 114 degrees on Monday. The hottest deserts west of Tucson, including Sells, Organ Pipe and Ajo, may equal or exceed 115 degrees. High temperatures next Tuesday should be nearly identical versus Monday, or perhaps even a degree-or-two hotter, although this is not reflected in the current forecast. Another concern next Monday and Tuesday will be an increase in lower and mid-level moisture across eastern sections, and the subsequent potential to produce high-based dry thunderstorms. Have noted that the 14/00Z GFS has trended higher with moisture values such as dewpoints, mixing ratios, relative humidity, precip water and model accumulated precip versus several previous solutions. However, the ECMWF depicted precip-free conditions to continue Monday and Tuesday. For this forecast issuance, have opted to maintain dry conditions next Monday, but opted to depict a slight chance of showers/ thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon/evening mainly near the mountains east-to-south of Tucson. The concern with this scenario is that minimal wetting rains would be the likely result, and thus dry lightning could produce additional wildfires. && .AVIATION...Valid thru 15/12Z. Clear skies or perhaps a few thin clouds above 20k ft AGL thru the period. Light surface winds this morning becoming W-NW 7-12 kts this afternoon then light and variable again after 15/03Z. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments. && .FIRE WEATHER...Very hot, exceptionally dry and becoming gradually more unstable this weekend into early next week. No precipitation is expected through the weekend. There is potential for isolated high based thunderstorms Monday evening over the White mountains and then south and east of Tucson Tuesday with the primary threats being dry lightning and strong outflow winds. 20-foot winds will be typical for June through Sunday, light drainage overnight and westerly/northwesterly 5-15 mph each afternoon. Thereafter winds may be more easterly. Single digit min RHs will be the rule through Monday with widespread sub 5% readings today through Saturday. Overnight recoveries will be quite poor especially through Thursday night with values generally 15% or less. A slight improvement in RH levels is expected beyond Saturday.
