Main forecast issues continue to focus on light wintry
precipitation chances through tonight and the bitterly cold wind
chills tonight and especially New Year's Eve.
The initial push of Arctic air has moved through the area with
only far southeast OK into western AR remaining a bit above
freezing. Radar/surface obs and reports have shown intermittent
freezing drizzle and a bit of snow through the day so far,
although the intensity has remained very light. Near term guidance
continues to show a modest signal of continued light wintry
precipitation (primarily -fzdz) into the overnight hours mainly
across southeast OK into western AR. Should any of this pick up in
intensity, slick roads could quickly develop so will err on the
cautious side and issue a winter weather advisory for far
southeast OK for late afternoon through tonight. The advisory may
need to be expanded in coverage, and will defer this to the
evening shift.
Will also hoist a wind chill advisory for parts of northeast OK
tonight with overnight values expected to dip to around -5F to
-10F. A secondary surge of Arctic air will spill south tonight,
with high temperatures tomorrow only struggling into the 20s for
most areas. Dangerously cold wind chills will develop Sunday
night, with values ranging from -5F across southeast OK into
western AR to near -20F along the KS border.
Another very cold night expected Monday night as surface ridge
axis passes overhead and winds die off. Temperatures should
eventually rise above 32F by Wednesday brief return flow returns.
Another glancing blow of cold air arrives Wednesday night, but
nothing like we're seeing now.

While mostly trace amounts are expected, there may be just enough accumulation on some roadways to cause a few slick spots. Wind chill values in the single digits are occurring across Oklahoma along and west of I-44. Wind chill readings will fall overnight across the area with values by Sunday morning ranging from 10 degrees below zero along the Kansas border to near zero in far northwestern Arkansas to the teens near the Red River. Additional light freezing drizzle or snow flurries will remain possible through Sunday morning mainly south of Interstate 40. Amounts are expected to remain very light, but given the cold temperatures, any accumulation at all will lead to localized travel problems.
