Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Topeka KS 1151 PM CDT Wed Oct 25 2017 ...Update to aviation forecast discussion... .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 247 PM CDT Wed Oct 25 2017 Northwest flow is seen over the area this afternoon with some scattered cirrus clouds seen on satellite over northeast Kansas. Temperatures this afternoon push into the 70s with lows tonight towards the upper 40s as southerly flow continues ahead of an approaching cold front. Models are in good agreement that the cold front will be across central Kansas Thursday morning, with the front almost entirely through the area by mid-afternoon. With little moisture available, no precipitation is expected with this system with the main impact being a significant drop in temperatures. Non-diurnal temperatures are expected tomorrow as highs occur in the very early afternoon nearing 70 degrees before dropping behind the front. Strong and gusty winds behind this boundary will also be seen in the afternoon with sustained winds near north central Kansas ranging from 25-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Elsewhere, gusts up to 25-30 mph are expected. With dry conditions in place, along with the strong winds tomorrow, very high fire danger is seen west of the Flint Hills, near north central Kansas. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 247 PM CDT Wed Oct 25 2017 By Thursday evening, any tender plants or vegetation should be brought inside, as the first in a series of cold overnight lows below freezing starts Thursday overnight. As the cold continues to surge southward Thursday night, 850mb temps fall to around -7C by 12z Friday. And with brisk north to northwest winds near 20 mph through the night, once temperatures fall toward freezing in our western counties, it will feel more like 20 degrees. Have kept, and slightly expanded southward and eastward, the freeze watch for temperatures around 32F. As the base of the upper trof pivots over eastern Kansas on Friday, anticipate cloud cover and cool temperatures to continue, with highs only in the middle 40s and northwest winds continuing to make it feel like the 30s. Winds finally start to come down into early Saturday morning, when overnight lows will fall into the middle 20s to near 30 - and a freeze watch will likely be necessary for Friday night. Highs on Saturday may make it a few degrees higher into the upper 40s with more insolation, but with another night of lows in the 20s forecast for Saturday night, if it didn't freeze Thursday or Friday it'll likely do so by Sunday. Highs around 60 cool to highs in the 50s for the early to mid week as another front pushes southward across the area. Overnight lows are generally forecast in the 30s.
