The National Weather Service in Great Falls has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow, which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM MST Sunday. * Locations: Marias Pass, Browning, and Cut Bank. * Timing/Impacts: Roads will become wet and slushy, then icy and snow covered as snow develops tonight. A cold front will bring colder temperatures. Surface low over Southern Alberta is beginning to move away to the east. Water vapor imagery reveals drier air with subsidence following the passing upper level trough axis. The combination of a stronger surface pressure gradient and subsidence aloft will produce a period of increasing surface winds along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains through this afternoon. Warmer temperatures and snow scouring have ended the blowing snow concerns for this area, so the winter weather advisory will be allowed to expire. Rain or mixed rain/snow showers could develop and move across the Continental Divide later this afternoon. With a few hundred Joules of CAPE in the guidance, have added isolated thunder to the forecast. PN && .AVIATION... UPDATED 1749Z. Southwest winds will weaken especially at the surface through the afternoon as a disturbance and associated warm front pushes north into the Plains this afternoon. KGTF and KLWT will be first to see this change, followed by KHVR and then finally KCTB around 03z. Expect VFR cigs to lower to MVFR and even IFR as upslope conditions develop, especially toward KCTB. Southwest winds just above the surface re-develop from the south to north (to the southeast of KCTB) through this evening and extend into the overnight, creating low-level wind shear issues especially across the Plains. Cassell && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 505 AM MST Sat Mar 4 2017/ Today through Sunday...The main issue for today is the continuing blowing snow along the northern Rocky Mountain Front. Though winds have temporarily decreased overnight, they should become quite strong again this morning, continuing the reduced visibility and snow drifts over some roadways. US 89 between St. Mary and Kiowa is still closed this morning as well, so will continue the Winter Weather Advisory at least through this morning so that we can further evaluate the situation. Otherwise, an increasingly moist southwest flow aloft will continue snow showers in the mountains, and spread showers to lower elevations this afternoon as a surface low pressure area moves into the area. This low pressure area will then drag a Canadian cold front southeast into North Central Montana tonight, likely bringing a band of snow to the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains, including Cut Bank. The front will then move southeast over the remainder of the area, which will increase the snow in the mountains and at lower elevations north and west of a Great Falls to Havre line. The cooler air will be slower to get into the valleys of Southwest Montana and to the south and east of the line, so showers should mostly be at most a rain/snow mix there. Forecast snow amounts appear to be at most worthy of an Advisory, but it happens over a long enough time that melting/settling of snow should hinder significant accumulations. Temperatures will remain 5 to 10 degrees above normal today and tonight, but they will cool to near normal in the south on Sunday and 5 to 10 degrees below normal in the north. Coulston Sunday night through Saturday...Expect a progressive pattern of weather disturbances to move through the region next week...but no significant storms/cold air is expected at this time. Several upper level disturbances will move through the region about one day apart from Sunday night through next Saturday. As a result...most days will have a at least a small chance for a passing rain/snow shower. Again confidence is low in timing/strength of each system...but for now...no significant amounts of snowfall are expected at any one time next week.
