portions of Canada and the U.S. At the surface, a lee surface trough
will reside over the CWA as well as the Canadian Prairies and
northern Great Plains. Scattered showers are expected over our CWA
and these showers will likely fall as snow in the mountains. A few
thunderstorms remain possible this afternoon and Sunday afternoon,
when daytime heating combined with cooling temperatures aloft may
yield appreciable instability. Near to slightly above-normal
highs today will be followed by near-normal lows tonight. On
Sunday, highs will be about 10-20 degrees below-normal as the
aforementioned low pressure trough and associated cooler air
continue to settle over the region.

Sunday Night through Tuesday...Main concern during this period
continues to be the expectation of accumulating snow. The
aforementioned longwave trough will continue to reside over much of
western Canada and the U.S. during this period, while several
embedded disturbances revolve around the longwave trough and the
associated cold air deepens. Simultaneously, a surface low pressure
center should develop over southern SK by early Sunday evening.
Models continue to disagree on the evolution of this surface low
thereafter, but the general consensus shows the low tracking
generally eastward along the U.S/Canada border through Tuesday. This
pattern evolution still supports mountain snow throughout the
period, with rain changing to wet snow at lower elevations Sunday
night and then continuing through Monday night. Models continue to
show the most favorable dynamics for steadier snow over North-
Central MT. On Tuesday, snow should taper-off from NW to SE as high
pressure aloft begins to drift southeastward from western Canada.
Confidence in a significant snowstorm for North-Central MT has
increased, but due to uncertainty regarding exact snow
amounts/magnitude of impacts, held off on upgrading the winter storm
watch to a warning for now. See our winter storm watch statement for

Tuesday night through Saturday...The early week storm system will
continue to wind-down Tuesday evening with showers diminishing and
skies clearing out overnight. The combination of fresh snow and
clearing skies should allow temperatures to drop well below freezing
for early Wednesday morning. Most locations should see minimum
temperatures in the lower to mid twenties but a few colder areas
could drop into the teens. As such, sprinkler systems and water
pipes should be monitored for possible breaks. For Wednesday through
Saturday, models move the main portion of the upper trough eastward
but leave a cutoff low in place over southern Idaho and Southwest
Montana. This feature is expected to bring a chance for showers to
far Southwest Montana over the next few days as it gradually moves
eastward. Meanwhile, thickness values will gradually increase over
the forecast area for slowly moderating temperatures through the end
of the week.
