Skies are mostly clear this morning, but clouds advancing from the
west. Surface pressure falls over North-central montana will help
turn winds out of the east. Short term model guidance continues to
suggest a band of showers and thunderstorms developing this
afternoon, generally along a line from around CTB to GTF to LWT.
Severe weather is not anticipated from any thunderstorm activity.
This band of showers/tstorms then lifts north with mid- level
warm advection into the evening. Freshened today's forecast with
respect to observed trends. Attention turns to details of the
pending spring storm, presently located over the PacNW and set to
bring widespread moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow through
portions of the forecast area tonight through early Thursday.
Winter storm watches remain in effect, but are being evaluated for
adjustments with the afternoon forecast. PN

.SYNOPSIS...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop this
afternoon, especially across central and northern areas with
increasing clouds by the evening hours. Overnight, a strong
Pacific storm system will deliver widespread heavy rain and
mountain snow to the region through most of the day on Wednesday
before coming to an end on Thursday.

Updated 1745Z.

VFR conditions prevail through most of today before conditions
deteriorate tonight as a storm system currently moving into the
Pacific NW dives into southern ID. Flow aloft becomes southerly and
destabilizes this afternoon with a few widely scattered
thunderstorms developing over N-central MT. Local MVFR conditions
late this afternoon near showers and thunderstorms will become more
widespread this evening as showers increase with the approaching
low. Widespread precipitation develops late tonight with IFR/LIFR
conditions and Mtn obscuration becoming widespread by Wednesday
morning. Surface low pressure trough developing over central MT will
bring increased E to SE winds across N-central MT later today and
tonight with a shift to West winds expected tonight at SW MT

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 545 AM MDT Tue May 16 2017/

Today through Thursday...Compact upper level low moving into NW
WA this morning will track SE today and tonight reaching a
position over southern ID Wednesday morning then slowly moving
south through Thursday. Models remain in pretty good agreement on
most of the features of this spring storm system with trickiest
part of the forecast over the next 48 hrs involving snow levels
and particularly, accumulation rates at pass levels. Airmass
moistens ands destabilizes this afternoon as flow aloft turns
southerly ahead of the approaching upper low. Expect showers and a
few thunderstorms to develop this afternoon and track north,
becoming more widespread across north central MT and western MT
late this afternoon into this evening. This evolves into
widespread rain across much of the forecast area tonight as the
upper low moves into southern ID and flow aloft turns to
southeasterly and eventually easterly by Wednesday morning.
Easterly flow to the north of the upper low in SE ID will feed
deep moisture into the forecast area Wednesday with an area of
moderate to locally heavy precipitation focused along areas
favoring easterly upslope flow, initially along the Rocky Mtn
Front, then extending south along the continental divide and also
including areas east of the Big Belt and Bridger Mtn ranges in
Meagher and Gallatin counties. Still looking at 1"-2"
precipitation amounts through Wednesday in these easterly upslpe
favored locations with amounts of 0.5"-1" across adjacent areas of
north-central and SW MT and lower amounts across far NE portions
of the forecast area. Snow levels lower fairly rapidly late
tonight across SW MT in closer proximity to the upper low center
and remain around 5000 feet through Wednesday. Further north
across central MT, snow levels may only lower to 6000 feet as a
warmer feed of moisture wraps around the low from the SE, while a
somewhat cooler low level airmass also noses south from AB along
the Rocky Mtn front, lowering snow levels to 5000 feet in the
Glacier park vicinity on Wednesday. Snow will fall at most
mountain passes in the forecast area late tonight through
Wednesday and may be heavy at times leading to low visibility with
at least slushy road surfaces possible. Still a large amount of
uncertainty in accumulation of snow on road surfaces with surface
and subsurface temperatures relatively warm and much of the
precipitation occurring during the daytime period tomorrow. Heavy
snow accumulation is likely at higher elevations with some area
along the Rocky mtn front potentially seeing 1-2 feet of snow
above 7000ft. Have expanded the winter storm watch to also include
areas along the continental divide from MacDonald Pass north
through Glacier Park. Precipitation will diminish from north to

Thursday night through Monday night...potent spring storm will be
winding down across the region from north to south through the
evening hours on Thursday, as the H500 closed low sinks from
Northern Utah/Southwestern Wyoming to near the Four Corners Region.
Ridging will then begin to build into the Intermountain West and
Northern Rockies through Friday, which will provide for generally
quite conditions across Southwestern and North Central Montana. The
one exception is a weak wave moving across Southern Canada, which
could bring some showers to areas of the Hi-Line Friday afternoon.
The ridge will transition to the east/southeast through the morning
hours on Saturday, as shortwave drops southeast out of British
Columbia and across the Northern Rockies of the CONUS. This
shortwave will bring showers and even a few thunderstorms to most of
North Central and Southwestern Montana Saturday evening through
Sunday morning, before slowly decreasing in areal coverage from
north to south. QPF amounts with this system are expected to be
"relatively light" at around a quarter to possible near a half of an
inch, however, this will be on-top of what falls from earlier/the
middle of this week. Following the passage of the shortwave,
northwest flow will dominate across the region. This will provide
for the chance for more scattered showers across the region on
Monday, especially during the daylight hours.

High temperatures across the region will be highly dependent on how
much and how far down in elevation snow accumulates (especially at
mid-slope elevations). While a dramatic warmup is not currently
anticipated through the long term, forecast highs are expected to
return to near normal values in the mid-50s to near 70 degrees.
Runoff from rain/snow melt into local area reservoirs and rivers
