continental divide. Additional snow is likely Thursday night 
through Friday.

* Accumulations: Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches at lower
  elevations through Thursday morning with 5 to 8 inches along the
  continental divide. Additional snow accumulation of 2 to 4 
inches possible Thursday night and Friday with 4 to 8 inches 
possible in the mountains. 

* Winds: North 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

.UPDATE...

With widespread snow tapering off for most areas, have dropped
most of the advisories that were in effect. The exceptions are
Blaine County mainly north of US Highway 2, as well as the US
Highway 87 corridor southeast of Great Falls through Judith Basin
and Fergus Counties. Satellite and radar trends suggest the NAM
and GFS trend of increasing snow coverage this morning into early
afternoon is on point. Have included Meagher County in the
advisory as well. &&

.AVIATION...
UPDATED 1800Z.

The moist west-northwest flow aloft will continue to obscure
mountain tops over Western and Southwest Montana for the next 24
hours. Opaque low cigs persist at KCTB, but will mix out with
westerly winds aloft around 19z. Another disturbance in the flow
aloft will spread fog / low clouds / light snow over the plains with
associated MVFR/IFR conditions. Scattered showers with occasional
MVFR conditions are likely overnight in the southwest.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 530 AM MST Wed Mar 8 2017/

Today through Thursday...The moist west-northwest flow aloft will
continue light snow in the mountains today, but moderate to at
times heavy snow is expected with another surge of Pacific
moisture tonight into Thursday. At lower elevations, light snow
will continue to decrease to showers with more of a rain/snow mix
today over North Central and Central Montana. A warm front moving
northeast over this area today will warm temperatures closer to
normal and mix down gusty westerly downslope winds. Snow has
generally stopped falling below 6000 feet across Central Montana,
so have removed the Winter Weather Advisory for those elevations,
similar to the one in Southwest Montana. Will leave the rest of
the Advisory intact due to the continuing snow showers.
Additional accumulations will only be an inch or so at lower
elevations in the north and over mountain passes in the central
and southern portions, while mountains could see up to an
additional 3 inches today. As mentioned above, another surge of
Pacific moisture with another associated disturbance will bring
more precipitation overnight into Thursday. The disturbance will
also bring down another Canadian cold front, which will keep
precipitation all snow across North Central/Central Montana, while
mild temperatures in Southwest Montana will cause snow to become
a rain/snow mix on Thursday. Additional snowfall may warrant
further winter highlights, but the overall situation into Friday
will be considered for the afternoon forecast package.

Thursday Night through Sunday Night...During this period, a
strong surface ridge of high pressure should persist over the
Canadian Prairies and Montana plains. This should allow a
stationary surface front to remain draped along the Rocky
Mountain Front and Central MT mountains, separating colder air
over much of North-Central MT from warmer air to the south. As a
shortwave trough approaches from the Pacific Northwest Thursday
night and then moves eastward across the CWA on Friday, it will
interact with the aforementioned front to result in deep lift.
This lift, combined with sufficient moisture, will result in
periods of light to moderate snow accumulating to at least
several inches across North-Central MT Thursday night into
Friday. However, snow amounts may near 12 inches in the Bears Paw
Mountains and reach 1 to 2 feet along the higher terrain of the
Rocky Mountain Front. Friday night through Sunday night,
additional periods of snow are possible over North-Central MT as
other eastward- moving shortwave troughs are progged to interact
with the stalled surface front. Elsewhere, periods of upslope
snow are possible along the west aspects of the Southwest MT
mountains Thursday night through the weekend. North of the
surface front, temperatures will be below normal across much of
North- Central MT, while temperatures in much of Southwest MT
will be near or slightly above normal.

Monday through Wednesday...On Monday, surface pressure falls and
WAA ahead of a low-to midlevel shortwave trough should allow the
surface front to advance northeastward as a warm front, as the
aforementioned surface ridge slides eastward. As a result,
additional periods of precipitation, primarily in the form of wet
snow, are possible over much of North-Central MT. Later in the
week, a high pressure ridge aloft still looks to build eastward
into our CWA for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, scattered
mountain snow showers and lower- elevation rain/snow showers
remain possible as multiple eastward- moving weather disturbances
may traverse the ridge. A moderating trend should allow
temperatures to tend near or above normal during the period.
